Save file location change

Post by warhero88AB »

Is it possible to save a WiE2 game file directly from the program to a folder on the cloud (ie, not by copying it from its "usual" local folder)? If so how?
Thanks.

NOTE: I do not use cloud storage or things like copilot as I am not eager to a become a subject of interest for big tech AI. But as you have asked.

With Dropbox, Google Drive, One Drive, iCloud ... with many you can define arbitrary directories as being cloud folders. If for some reason you cannot do as I said, then you can create Microsoft Junctions (symbolic folder reference) to a subdirectory of the cloud root where the save directory should be. Any game will see its save directory where it expects, but the actual folder will be off the cloud root).

E:\Games\WITE2\Dat\Save

Thus, any changes to the above will be replicated to the cloud provided you have an Internet connection. You can set it to SYNC bi-directionally which would mean whatever is the latest host to do a save will cause that save to be pushed to all other hosts.

I hope that helps.

WOW! I tried it and it works perfectly. :D

You first need to create a folder on the cloud target location. In my case "CloudSave"-Folder on OneDrive.
In Windows 11 open the terminal (admin) and then link it with the Command "mklink" by specifying the Junction within your WitE2 installation save folder.

This is the command for terminal prompt:
cmd /c mklink /J "C:\Games\Gary Grigsby's War in the East 2\Dat\Save\JunctionFolder" "C:\Users\terry\OneDrive\Games\Gary Grigsby's War in the East 2\CloudSave"

Then you can save the game into the linked folder in the cloud.
It does not support additional subfolders per scenario though, so make sure you use a unique name for each scenario.

Do this once on all your PCs where WitE2 is installed to link the same cloud save folder.
I can access the same saves from my Laptop and from my Desktop PC w/o copying any files.

Cheers

BTW, I have quite a few custom solutions for this game and others. Perhaps the most useful is to make edge scroll work properly when you have more than a single display. Maybe about 20 lines of AHK code.
