Countering "Meteor" missiles?

Post by SchDerGrosse »

I am in the middle of the Kashmir Fire campaign (at around mission 7 playing India), and I have had the pleasure to encounter the Eurofighter Typhoon with 6 Meteor missiles as its loadout.

AIM-120 AMRAAMs have been bad enough (they outrange Indian planes) but the Meteor missile is just on a whole different level.

My tactics has been so far to fly at 36k and immediately turn around at the time of the missile launch, outrun the missiles and repeat the maneuver till the enemy plane runs out of ammo.

This doesn’t work with Meteors though. Due to the small profile of the missile, they get detected only at ~20nms in front of my planes, which is waaay to late to turn around (or do anything). I tried lower altitudes and other forms of dodging, but nothing worked and my planes just get decimated.

Even if I anticipate the launch exactly at 75nm (max range), it is still not a guarantee that I can outrun the missile (not to mention that many times I do not now know that I am going up against EF Typhoons and not F16-s).

Any advice how to tackle these planes / missiles?

Thanks,

The battlefield is not an even playing field and CMO uses open source info on weapon ranges/deployments so you cant expect to play a balanced scenario all the time.
I don't own the Kashmir Fire campaign so i'm not familiar with what assets you have to work with. Typically if your opponent has an extended air to air range engagement capability you should try to lure them in closer. Drag them into your SAM coverage and use offensive electronic counter measures to mask your movement. use terrain masking if available to sneak in closer and strike from behind with your air assets. Warfare is dynamic and asymmetrical; perhaps don't even send your air assets to fight, but rather strike with ground forces destroying the enemies airbase.

Since you can't use the range information to the missile to determine when to evade, use the range information to the shooter. That's probably smarter anyhow. Since the Eurofighters are more challenging than the Vipers, assume everything is a Eurofighter until proven otherwise and react accordingly. Plan around the most challenging threat.

If you see that the plane in front of you has slowed to 350kts and just pointed his nose about 60 degrees off of your bearing (i.e. puts you on his 2 or 10 O'Clock), run!

BTW, I'm working on a major update for the BVR duel quick battles to include a 2022 plane set. That should give the community a playground to work on tactics, etc. to help in the scenarios. Sometimes just realizing how badly you will be outgunned helps a lot.
The boogabooga doctrine for CMO: Any intentional human intervention needs to be able to completely and reliably over-ride anything that the AI is doing at any time.
