A nice tour of the Zumwalt
A nice article covering the Zumwalt with an interactive image explaining the various external toys.

To my shame, I still haven't tried this ship in Command.

Hi hellfish6, I find looking up and learning about the various assets that you can use in Command as very rewarding and certainly adds another layer to the operations.
Here's another article that has an image of the operations center on the Zumwalt. I think you could install Command on the Zumwalt and they might not notice...

The Navy traditionalist in me cringes that a cruiser-sized ship commanded by a Captain, who normally would command cruisers, is still called a destroyer.

And a corvette is called an LCS because, God knows, we don't deploy anything as trivial as a corvette.

Good point. Another pet peeve (coming from someone involved in nuclear submarine design and testing for 30 years) is how the Navy has completely hosed the naming system for ships in general, but especially for submarines. The SEAWOLF class being the most glaring example. First one - sea creature again (we all rejoiced - back to tradition), then the CONNECTICUT - when at the time Tridents were being named for states, then the Jimmy Carter (also no CVN but the reasoning was that Carter was a big proponent of special ops and was a former navy nuke so we thought this one was good). Then they started naming attack subs after states instead of cities with the VIRGINIA class.
So what will they now start naming the OHIO Replacement class - I suppose they could re-use those state names one by one as they replace the OHIOs.
And I note that the 3rd DDG 1000 will be named the Lyndon Johnson. So he doesn't rate a CVN like the rest of the presidents. What gives with that?

Everything changes with time I suppose, but the change isn't consistent.

Hi Dave,
EXACTLY !!!
Concur 100%... I can't stand the naming convention today - Virginia is not a proper name for a fast attack submarine... How can they compare with the names from our gory days... Wahoo, Tang, Cavalla, Trigger, Flasher... [sigh] And the memories those names invoke... I suppose it's to kiss up to politicians to keep the money flowing - as it certainly can't be true submariners coming up with these naming conventions...

Scott

I walk across the Sagadahoc bridge just about every day and have been able to watch the Zumwalt develop into the ship she is today. The superstructure for the second in class just arrived at the yard a week or so ago, and her primary hull is in the later stages of construction. Shouldn't be long now and they will be pushing DDG-1001 into the floating dry dock in order to launch her. After these ships are done, it's on to the Flight III DDG 51's.

It's like a slimmed down knife edged Tico with torpedo's, I can't look away.
Thanks, Jeff~

oh
only 3 vessels will be built: DDG-1000 to DDG-1002
the Zumwalt-class is a so called "smart ship" - the navy tested the smart ship concept from 1995 on the "Tico" USS Yorktown - however in 1998 the ship was shut down by computer failure:

Wire magazin aptly said "sunk by Windows NT"

thats why zumwalt is running linux (red hat)

You've got to wonder why his parents didn't just go the whole hog and give him Tiberius as a middle name.
Out of curiosity, are there any Captain Picards or Janeways out there?

Thanks for those DirtyFred. Yeah, guess it's opened them up to the cyber threat even more so with all the tech onboard.
@FascistDog, I found a Picard but he is still going up the ranks in the USAF. No Janeway... yet.

reminds me of Battlestar Galactica - the new tv series - where Adama insists on non-networked computers because the enemy can infiltrate everything with viruses ...
