Harrier/F-35B hover

Post by Adagosto »

Hi all,
I searched the forum with no luck. This can't be the first time this has been asked, so sorry for the repeat....

Why is it that I cannot get AV-8Bs or the F-35B to hover? Is it just not modeled or not considered practical and therefore not modeled or and I just doing something totally wrong?

I could be wrong but I think it's just not modelled; these jets generally only ever hover during landing (the F-35B even has its weapons disabled during a hover), so it's not something that'd generally be seen in a CMO scenario.

I figured as much. Thanks.

Back in the 80's the AV-8's deployed in parts of Europe were trained to use road tunnels as makeshift bunkers. The idea was they would use these as FOB's and attack Soviet troop and artillery positions. I was trying to model that.

That is quite easy to do. Remember however that FOB= Forward Operating Base, not firing position. Harriers would hide in the FOBs and get re-armed/re-fueled there which is easy to set up by building the FOB with component parts. With QTR, many of the Harrier loadouts can fly after 15-20 min. But they still need to take off and fly to engage targets. They could not hover in a tunnel and fire a missile without becoming a Kamikaze in the process, cannot imagine they could see very much from there anyway.
