Head on! Twice the same scenario, but 2 different games

Post by CaptCarnage »

This is not so much an AAR as a report on what happened in my 2 games of Head On as NATO.

The very first time I played it I developed a strategy and won with that. Being bored today I fired up 2.05 and see if I can still win it with the same strategy.

That strategy just consisted of putting tanks on the ridge near Weisbach because it gives the boys a chance to shoot Soviets deep into the Valley.
Also tanks on the ridge west of Waldberg so once the valley starts filling up with Russians you can start taking them out.
The reinforcements will then be sent to the hill west of Bischofsheim to act as stopgap for whatever is left.

Anyway - the first time I played like this, it kinda worked but I was very sloppy. Yes I started taking down tanks from the ridges, but there are a lot of them, so many will get through. Too enthusiastic with the helos - all of them I lost very early on, most of them to Hinds... And I also lost my main HQ because I didn't pay much attention to its location. Made a mistake by shifting tanks from Waldberg to the north, so temporarily too many Russians were allowed to push through the forest. In the end I did bring down enemy forces enough to end the scenario in Sudden Death but I wasn't very happy with it.

So I tried again. Exactly the same strategy and now I was going to be more detailed in my execution. I was going to leave the tanks on the ridges no matter what.

And before I had any soviets in my gunsights, it started raining. Heavily. 500m visibility means that whatever happens in the river valley, you won't see it from the ridges... Completely useless. What is also completely useless in heavy rain is a Hind. I could easily take them down with my Helos...

I won't bother you all with the exact course of events, but this game was actually played out on time because of the rain... It kept raining and raining and in the end I had the Russians nicely pocketed in Bischofsheim anad they had nowhere to go.
It turned out to be a 86% Victory for NATO when the clock finally reached 0.

Same scenario but completely different :) Well done guys!
