Request: Combat replay

Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: The German-Soviet War 1941-1945 is a turn-based World War II strategy game stretching across the entire Eastern Front. Gamers can engage in an epic campaign, including division-sized battles with realistic and historical terrain, weather, orders of battle, logistics and combat results.

The critically and fan-acclaimed Eastern Front mega-game Gary Grigsby’s War in the East just got bigger and better with Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: Don to the Danube! This expansion to the award-winning War in the East comes with a wide array of later war scenarios ranging from short but intense 6 turn bouts like the Battle for Kharkov (1942) to immense 37-turn engagements taking place across multiple nations like Drama on the Danube (Summer 1944 – Spring 1945).

Request: Combat replay

Post by bwheatley »

I know it's been posted before. If the forum search worked....i'd find it and update that post but it doesn't so too bad so sad.

I heard the arguments for why this system is awesome. But i find it to be lacking. I think it's even more then a nice to have. But when i open a turn i'd like to see what happened. Instead i see that i have 25 divisions cut off by magic (i'm using the apple definition of magic ala ipad).
Oh then i hit F11 and walk through combats but i still don't know what order they occurred in. I want to see what order enemy movements (that i can see) happen in. And i want to see the order of combats. Because it really does matter.

I can't see how anyone would say the system we have now is better? You can keep the system we have now. We just need another option to discretely show you the order with which units moved.

It's easy you have a table for each turn with a moveid (auto incrementing) and a visible flag, start x, start y, end x, end y.
Unit 1 moves it's not visible to the oppfor so you oppfor won't see it in the turn replay.
etc etc.

And i'm saying using startx, starty endx, endy because if you move a unit then the AI will plan the route for you. So you just call the movement API with those coordinates and see what path it gives you back. If a user takes a different route it will still be broken into multiple entries in the table anyway.

just my .02.

I agree that it would be very useful to see the replay of the opponent's turn.

I don't think bw was setting a priority on this, so yeah we all agree more important game mechanic and historical issues to fix first.

Personally as a player of Advance Tactics, I like his idea of a replay as a nice to have.

Nice to have but perhaps lengthy in execution.

It probably won't be deemed worth the effort. But seems like a short cut to make people manually extrapolate hundreds of battles a a turn trying to figure out who moved where.

I guess we'll have to write a WITP staff like program. :)

Agreed! This would be an incredible tool to use in creating outstanding AARs.

I use the commanders report show battles against the AI. It seems ok.

Why not some form of combat report? Would not 100% accurate ofc but would be more realistic? Or maybe the map gets marked up with main lines of attack and intelligence guess at formation boundaries etc

yes we need a virtual staff HQ function :-_ (now where is Von Manstein?)

Both of these are already in the game. Open up the CR and select the Battles tab or hit F11 and whala there you go!

A text log with X,Y coordinates would be even more useful. Since i like charting where combat occurs.
But it does sound like a job for a wite staff java app.

I'd imagine the combat report would be similar to the combat reports in WITP. There is fog of war enabled so you don't always see true values in those reports.

And that is preferred for me.

The only thing i think missing with the battle report is an option to review previous turns. Currently it is just the current turn.

Toaw has a replay of the opponent turn and I never bother watching it especially when its like 400 plus turns.  I guess I should to see whose doing what but I like this game due to the fact that it keeps track of all the casualties.  When I used to play War in the east in the old days I used to keep track of casualties on paper!!
