Player Strategies & the AI

Post by EdwinP »

A post to list some player strategies and thoughts on how it impacts the AI

1. I operated the 4 unit British expeditionary force; in France, to Southern France. They borded amphibious transports and when Italy entered the war they seized the Sardina port city in one turn. With a HQ unit this provides a perfect location for a UK air base for several UK air units. Coupled with LR air, the Allied player can more easily sink the Italian fleet, if it comes within range, conquer Tripoli; when Italian units are focused elsewhere, or the Allies can use it to seize Tunis and Algiers.

Thus far the AI ignores the UK conquest of Sardina. Perhaps, if Sardina is Allied controlled it should keep a stronger garrison around Tripoli. Or, perhaps if the UK forces are not near the frontlines in Northern France - France suffers a national morale penalty or, more threateningly - Vichy France having seen the British abandon them on the battlefield joins the Axis.

I am playing the 1939 campaign, when I got Turkey in I invaded Russia. The soviets put way too much into the Turkish side show
that affected the campaign in Russia due to a massive amount of Soviet units in Turkey.

Agreed, when I did the same thing the AI assigned two HQ units to Turkey. That weakened their defense in central Russia.

I'm near the end of the 1941 Campaign, playing the Russians with the AI as the Germans and also the Western Allies. It's been fascinating to watch how the AI operates as I can see everything it does with the Western Allies. Sometimes it's moves make no sense, at other times it does very well.

One puzzle to me is how the US air units were never operated to Britain. That's usually the first thing I do as the US player. Here they stayed in the US as the troops were sent to the UK. Then when they invaded the AI quickly took Brittany and Normandy and the next turn the US air started to operate into France. I find it odd they never went to the UK to use there.

The other oddity is that when the AI invaded Sicily, it quickly moved up the boot of Italy and never took any of the ports in Sicily. So until they finally captured in Italy the UK forces there had no port. Yet they could reinforce their units. After taking the port in Italy they finally took a port in Sicily after months of not even trying. Strange but in the end the AI does work and I'm impressed with how it puts on really massive invasions!
