hang on turn

Post by AstroCat »

Started a new game, did a few moves as the axis and then the game hung up and crashed. Didn't even get through 1 turn. DXDiag attached.

I added the .exe to my Anti Virus and firewall programs, we'll see if that makes a difference.

alter the power settings in your laptop to use full power, not save power mode and run on mains not off battery and see if it makes any difference

also with 16gb installed but you have or O/S has assigned 8gb of this to be shared with the video chip

Card name: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M

Display Memory: 16325 MB
Dedicated Memory: 8152 MB
Shared Memory: 8172 MB

disable the shared memory as 99% of games won't use more than 8gb of memory, where as the O/S will always use and need more

please make sure all game pre requisite are installed with the game, even if you think or fully know there are already installed, it will only over write, and it may be that you have a older or newer version of these where as the game in question may need a certain version.

Very interesting about the shared memory. Where is this setting? The power mode is easy to switch. Thanks.

bios, first you need your motherboard manual, on how to get into the bios at start up, some are easy some aren't so easy, some have plenty of options, some have very little, so it's all depending on which one you have and your knowledge of bios and settings, the manuals explain it all, just be careful when your in there to only do the one thing and don't alter anything else and remember to save the changers on exit, then boot back into windows and re check it, while some give the option to disable shared memory, some don't, so if it doesn't chose the lowest setting and save then exit

I've been building PCs since the late 80's, so all good there... just never maneuvered the shared memory on a laptop, just never came up. I'll check it out. Thanks.

for me also, with most system hangs, but not all, try and find out what app or program is causing the problem, 9 out of 10 times it's not the one your running either, it's a background one that becomes active when you use the one which hangs, so mostly a background app, how to get round it,

disable 90% + of all background apps auto running at startup on a given pc setup, as most have word, office, printers and a larger list of apps they mostly don't use that often.

what happens when you close a background auto loading apps at start up?

nothing, apart from the apps doesn't pre load each start and takes a fraction of a few seconds more to load when needed, but doesn't stop the app from loading, so almost all background tasks can be disabled, just leave the AV on, run the game as admin and makes sure your AV has been set to run only at a either given time or when needed, not scanning in the background every so often, or if it scans a game file when it's needed, the game or system will hang as it can't be used by 2 processors at once, some can, but others can't, so game hangs while it waits to be free, same as resources and memory, playing a game can take a given amount of power, running other stuff in the background can take away the power needed at a given time and moment and cause a system hang.
