Russo-German War 'JanRoss' Variant
Russo-German War 'JanRoss' Variant
This file includes the Russo-German War 41-43 'JanRoss' Variant, which covers the first 2 years of the conflict.
Eastern Front - June 22nd 1941 to March 30th 1943
Can a strategically limited Germany subdue the Soviet colossus before shortages of industrial and material resources force an outcome? Accepting their strategic limitations, German leaders realise they must strike hard to avoid the conflict extending past 1942.
Note that this version is the original Russo-German War 41-45 scenario with additional features. While the original version is still valid, players may wish to use this version based on their preferences. Please read the included Scenario PDF File for details, and note AXIS Player Turn 1 Theatre Options.
If you had previously downloaded Russo-German War 41-45, the only differences in this download are the PDF and Scenario File.
v1.4 [January 29, 2024]
Added an Axis Theater Option: Finnish Theater of Operations Optional Deployment

Re: Russo-German War 'JanRoss' Variant
What is the purpose of these units? NBr & NBr+ for turn 500?
Re: Russo-German War 'JanRoss' Variant
Hi Cpl GAC,
These are formation limit units that were included (laboriously) in the majority of Soviet formations to prevent the Soviet player breaking units. They make for better PBEM balance, but have no impact on the scenario.
We elected to include them because of the rather serious 'ant-unit' problem with the enormous RGW Soviet OOB. If every Soviet rifle division can break into say regiments, that is one thing; but if every minor unit can also do it the Soviet player has an almost endless supply of tiny units. In extreme circumstances this can be used to tie down German formations almost endlessly....

Re: Russo-German War 'JanRoss' Variant
Thanks for the explanation. A laborious effort was definitely the phrase in my head as I looked through it.

That's how I feel about German Division HQs...Monash wrote: Tue Nov 15, 2022 1:16 am In extreme circumstances this can be used to tie down German formations almost endlessly....

If you're STILL making Panzer IIs after seeing your first T-34... you're probably going to lose.
Re: Russo-German War 'JanRoss' Variant
Gents - on turn 14 and just noticed - the Soviet 6th Const Bde (Soviets RVGK Construct) sitting in Odessa does not have a formation assignment. Reloaded to turn one - yup - no formation assignment.
I really enjoy this scenario - one of you loves running the panzers through the forests just south of the Valdai hills.
Should I disband the 6th RVGK and expect it not to reappear?

Re: Russo-German War 'JanRoss' Variant
I do not understand what this means, can you explain with more detail? Thanks!does not have a formation assignment.
Re: Russo-German War 'JanRoss' Variant
Sorry, I missed it. It's at the very bottom of the Formation list - below the NBr+ units. I scrolled down and found it.
Nevermind.

Re: Russo-German War 'JanRoss' Variant
We'll move it up so it isn't at the bottom. Thanks for catching it!
Re: Russo-German War 'JanRoss' Variant
As always in eastern front scenarios Germans have more trucks than horses
I hope ppl know it's opposite to reality.
The good thing in this one is there are more horse replacements than trucks
But horses start coming from 70 turn
Don't know why.

There is no such thing as a historically accurate strategy game. Every game stops being historically accurate from the very first move player do. First unit that moves ahistorically, first battle with non-historical results, mean we ride in unknown.

Re: Russo-German War 'JanRoss' Variant
Really, gents... 7 Panzer Corps and counting where 7 should not be.
Is "JanRoss" slang for "bet you don't see this coming".
I'd say nicely done, but I'm currently not feeling it.

I'm not sure what you are on about?
Re: Russo-German War 'JanRoss' Variant
How many Horses are in a Horse Team, and how many Trucks are in a truck?Germans have more trucks than horses
However, this doesn't really matter as TOAW uses Transport Assets to determine Movement Allowances, so bean counting is not applicable for Transport Capable Equipment.
The Germans didn't expect to need any additional horses in this quick campaign, but around turn 70 they started procuring horses for the longer than expected campaign.horses start coming from 70 turn
Re: Russo-German War 'JanRoss' Variant
I'm "complaining" that Elmer is really well done in this version.
I didn't expect seven panzer corps to start appearing in a certain place(s). I don't want to spoil the surprise for anyone with details.

Re: Russo-German War 'JanRoss' Variant
Gents - a minor housekeeping issue for any future fine-tuning updates; divisions in the Soviet 5th Army are still set as sections.

Re: Russo-German War 'JanRoss' Variant
It looks like they were fixed for v1.4.

Re: Russo-German War 'JanRoss' Variant
I'm using v1.2 modified August 2022 - the above link.
Any timetable on the latest version release?
(unless when I tinkered with the map I screwed the update up)

Re: Russo-German War 'JanRoss' Variant
I was waiting for further developments. Consideration is being given to various Theater Options, but nothing definite yet. Therefore, v1.4 has now been posted

Re: Russo-German War 'JanRoss' Variant
Why is my Version 1.4 the 5th A and the 26th A 228RD - still showing Section unit size. My briefing says v1.4.
Any suggestions?

Re: Russo-German War 'JanRoss' Variant
You can easily fix the two misidentified divisions in the editor. For the BDR unit in the lower right, I suggest you get a copy of the modified CounterNumber files (changes section to battalion) for the Graphics Override folder.
As to why the units still appear as sections, easy to overlook such a small detail when working with hundreds of counter units.

I think the error is on me. I "mis-saved" something- see PzAbt's screenshot above versus my 2nd turn;
