Remagen

Post by ASPARTANSPEAKS »

Just wondering if anyone has played this as the German side and obtained a favorable result? I would be very happy to achieve a draw playing this scenario!

Hi,

where did you find that scenario...is it from here:

https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/view ... p?t=317756

...because I just downloaded it, tried solitaire both sides and it looks strange to me. What I see is that Germans start with few weakest units "reorganizing" and few reinforcements that are supposed to come in 5th and 6th turn, then later I think 13th. And in the meantime, even with the single available US mech inf. I can wreak chaos. With further extremely strong US arty/inf etc. coming every turn along. Something does not look ok here, or I installed something wrong (put it in My Documents \ TOAWs folder \Scenarios \WW II - West Front \Remagen . Also tried with .eqp file in similarly named folder in "Graphics Override".

Not sure if I am doing something wrong, but this is not really playable. After 4 turns and yet no german's reinf, I conquered all...

Would also myself like to know if I made some mistake during installation (though this seems to be for TOAW III).

Here is a version saved with the TOAW IV editor. Let us know if it works better (or not).

I copied the file and started again. The only difference I have noted is maybe a difference in the dynamics...I was playing very quickly, like speed chess, not really giving too much thinking to any tactical approach and proper arty usage. So very "dirty" and quick game, same as previous time. Now I was not able to reach and cap eastern german positions. But basically, in first 4 rounds, german player has nothing to do, can just click on "end turn". Or I am missing something big. There are few german reinf. coming to the east region on turn 5 and then 6...but US is getting from turn 2 disproportional amount of reinforcements. I will try later to play longer and see what happens, but what I see from reinf. list - those german units I would say later have abs. no chance to dig out allies that would cap all north, south, east.

If there is some change in the gameplay after prolonged battle, I will report here. But this scenario seems strange. Especially because I really do not see a single move for germans first 4 rounds.

Btw, has anyone of you guys played this old SPI game? The author of scenario mentioned it in that other post...

It's a scenario for beginners, it is meant to be one sided in order to learn simple gameplay.

I've been playing the version saved with the IV editor and think it is a hoot! Seems to model history well. The German military of 1945 was a far cry from the force that invaded Poland in 1939.

:D

Would only suggest the US heavy artillery units have transport assets so they can move normally.

But I don't want you to move them normally! ;)

The version linked in post #2 was saved with IV, so no need to take the extra step. I think maybe all those that Larry posted in that thread have been saved with IV.

Gee, I guess I can't convince you to add a couple of Japanese midget submarines as an "interesting what-if"

Yeah, with little time to play the game these days, I prefer scenario sides that are more interesting in terms of what a player can do. Playing the Germans in 1945 is challenging in any scenario designed to reflect history.
