The Ultimate Warship

Post by Commander Stormwolf »

*screenshots to follow* [:)]

Sen-Toku-Kai Class Submarine

4xSeiran floatplanes
8 x 24" torpedo tubes
1xMidget Submarine

.. after changing the submarine doctrine, with the deck gun and
AA battery removed, the Sen-Toku has been transformed into a war winner,
capable of attacking and defending itself from attack

if 10 of these submarines operate as a wolf-pack..

1) capable of launching a long-range torpedo strike with 80x24" torpedoes
2) capable of a submarine-launched torpedo attack with fighter and torpedo bmr variants
of the Seiran
3) immune to aerial counter-attack, except by ASW planes, and then capable
of using Seiran fighters as CAP to prevent ASW attacks
4) capable of launching midget submarines in the area to confuse destroyers and present false targets
5) capable of launching the midget subs into enemy ports to finish off wounded vessels

10 of these subs cost about 40,000 tons of steel, the same as a 1 carrier task force
would have been interesting if Yamamoto had lived and the Sen-toku program continued
at first priority (he wanted to build 20 of them)

Minor problem. The oversized monstrosity would have a crush depth of about 100 feet, and the manuverability of a raft. ASW aircraft would sink them as fast as they could find them (and their radar signiture would be impressive). Maybe they should be called LUT's ( Large Unmanueverable Targets ).

Iceberg CVs. You know it makes sense. Well, considerably more sense then the sub in the OP, fish in a barrel as that may be.

While 50% of the SBDs are on ASW, Kido Butai lurks nearby [8D]

iceberg carriers would have worked if Britain had fallen.. floating B-17 base

many other ideas could have been implemented.. especially the use of japanese AV ships
to launch flying boats (an idea the USN grasped during the cold war)

when you have poor industry.. the only way to compete is with new ideas

well the only real downside is that float torpedo planes would be about 20% slower than carrier planes
(Seiran was 295 mph, D4Y2 was 360 mph with the same engine), but they would be really annoying to face

and isn't that the purpose of the IJN? to annoy the allies as much as possible? [;)]

A lot of ideas get developed in between the wars, here is the USN combining the seaplane and the cargo ship

A submarine in that size would be even more difficult and would be picked up by sonar much easier unless making whale sounds. If the Japaneses manage to come up with another solutions incase destroyers or escorts coming overhead, try to release some magnetic mines or tow them. There can be alot of neat tricks in many posibilities, believe the Germans manage to have magnetic torpedoes as well as mines, wasnt sure if the Japaneses had them.

Presumably they are in the game already no? A few were launched after all.

Not being a JFB I dont' know but... when dealing with the late war IJN given you have control over what to build and what to cancel, it'd be nice if you had the option to build a lot of ships that were only on the drawing boards in real life, these subs among them. Of course, only provided you have the yardspace (which doesnt seem all that well modelled - not sufficiently to handle this anyway).

Yes in the non-historic scenarios, nice if the player is limited by slots (different sizes for different types of ship) and the materials(steel)
to decide what you want to build.. that is basically what it was in the real war..IJN had to choose (and the player needs that freedom too)

USN just built everything [X(]... the sad thing is USN's bottleneck wasn't even materials but labor... could pump out enormous amounts of materials..just had to build designs that were fast in the pipeline..and they did so..and won the war

Original Sen-Toku

3xSeiran floatplane
8x21" torpedo tubes
1xDeck Gun
10 x 25mm AA

Converted sen-toku

4xSeiran floatplane
8x24" torpedo tubes
1xMidget sub attachment

----------------------------------

logic: dissuade commanders from engaging in surface duels
and firing AA at patrols planes when more advanced weapon systems
are available, use the displacementt to improve the hangar size and torpedo battery
