Corsairs on CVs and Whatnot
I'm just getting Carrier-Capable Corsairs in my game vs. Greyjoy. What is the conventional wisdom these days on honorable use? I understand they needed a larger deck to land, which precluded use on CVEs. Want to confirm.
Were they used on CVLs?
Is it kosher to use them on CVEs?

RE: Corsairs on CVs and Whatnot
There were CVEs at the end of the war that were 100% Marine. The fighters were F4U-1d.
Corsairs could take off from a CVE, though they usually took the whole deck. When loaded with bombs they would be launched with the catapult.

I would say have at it. They also few from CVEs (using cat launches) during the Korean War.

I would say that I have seen few objections to the use of any carrier capable plane from any carrier. It is not truly historic but it works for both sides. You can make a HR with your opponent but I would not bother.

RE: Corsairs on CVs and Whatnot
I would prioritize getting Corsairs on the CVs/CVLs first before starting to think about filling out the CVEs.

RE: Corsairs on CVs and Whatnot
Perfectly Kosher Brad, Imho.
History says they could fly from CVEs too. The fact that they did not till very late doesn't mean they coulnd't.
Let's not be too strict in terms of reproducing the same mistakes/choices they did in RL... It's not a game changer, not at all, so i'd say go for it!
For the very same reason i shouldn't be allowed to use Judys on CVE/CVLs... only Vals... but it would seem to me a little bit too much in terms of historic restrictions

in my game (8/44), I'm using them on CVEs as point-defense CAP vs. kamis.

as others correctly pointed out already the carrier capable Corsair could and did fly from CVE so that shouldn't mind you. Though the question for me would be is it worth it and do I really need Corsairs on CVE? For me, the dozens of CVE are 99% used as CAP shield during my invasions means they will travel with the fleet to the target and then stay with the amphib TFs in the base hex the amphib convoys unload. So that means the fighters aboard the CVE will fight off incoming strikes and for that purpose the Hellcat works just as good. Saying this because as long as there are not as many Corsairs around to literally fill out each and every USN/USMC fighter squadron I'll use my Corsairs for my CV and for my land based USMC squadrons because those land based USMC squadrons are those that will fly offensive sweeps against the enemy and here you'll definately see a difference to Hellcats. On escort, again it doesn't matter much if you use a Hellcat or a Corsair, both will suffer against enemy Cap.

BTW, here are some performance characteristics for the F4U, including take off run lengths
http://www.wwiiaircraftperformance.org/f4u/f4u.html
It could easily take off from a CVE if the CVE was turned into the wind.
This thread has a list of US fighters with take off runs in still air:

Many of you don't know that Brad's original nickname, before Q-Ball, was FM2 Fanboy.

How many Corvairs can you operate off a CV?
I don't know about Corvairs, but the French tried the Citroen

You can launch all the Corvairs you want (especially using the catapult). Recovering them is a bit of a problem though. [8|][:D]
RE: Corsairs on CVs and Whatnot
Well actually Corvairs were the first choice of may naval top guns until Ralph Nader wrote that damn book. Personally, I just don't see getting the same adrenaline jolt being launched off the deck of a carrier in a Prius...That and of course the air bags in the Prius really make using the ejector seat hard.

The French have just seemed to lack something, militarily speaking, since Napoleon. And he was technically Corsican.
