Interesting info (future projects)

Post by U2 »

Hi all!

Just read most of Bill Trotter's EXCELLENT article on the Origins convention which included an interview with a certain guy from SSG [:)]

"SSG’s Roger Keating wasn’t there packing UPS boxes – he left on a business trip the night before Origins closed -- but over a couple of cold beers the night before he’d told me to keep my eyes peeled for SSG’s first-ever boardgame. “Much as I hate to say it, the PC platform is struggling – again – for its place in the sun, so we have decided to hedge our bets by expanding the formats in which our games are available. The game in question will be a battalion-scaled simulation of the Italian campaigns. Excellent game, really.”

“But you will still be publishing games for the PC, won’t you?” I asked in a sinking voice.

“Oh, yes. There are several lining up at the moment, including one on the Battle of Moscow, a refreshingly different take on Operation Market-Garden, and a game entitled Crusader, which focuses on the see-saw struggle for North Africa. But I think the one that you might be most interested in, is our simulation of the Siege of Malta.” He paused for a sip of beer. “Um, by that I mean the World War Two siege, not that Sixteenth-Century affair.'"

Cheers

But are these intended to be a part of the Decisive battles series

or a new game system?

Who cares?

If they are, great! If not, great! I would bet the Moscow game is and the Africa too but Malta must be a new engine? Does not sound like a game Decisive Battles could reflect very well. The blockade of Malta that is...

I will buy any game they publish. The bord game too! [&o]

Hi Guys,
Just to clear this up a little - over the last couple of years Ian has been putting together a boardgame that we think is pretty good based on the Warlords computer game series - it involves holding your own castles, attacking and capturing or razing enemy castles and completing quests in order to win the game. It has been designed as a fantasy family game and we currently have a prototype floating around being displayed in the hopes of obtaining a publisher (which is what it was doing at origins).

I would love to see a remake of Carriers at War. For the PC, of course.

Played it - loved it

Last night I had the pleasure of being in an eight player game of SSG's preproduction version of their Warlords boardgame. Man it was a hoot. It's at the sophisticated end of the beer and pretzels genre and does a good job of bringing the Warlords computergame to the tabletop. If you ever get a chance to play it at a convention then don't pass it up. The best bit was watching Mark "Empire of the Sun" Herman getting his clock cleaned by unco-operative dice. Next time he comes to Australia he'll probably bring his own.

Seriously, well worth the effort to play. Unfortunately The SSG guys wouldn't commit themselves to bringing the full BIN or BII to the tabletop.

I reckon the games would be too slow for table top because the calculations would take a long time.

It would take ages to administer the supply rules.

And there would be no fog of war.

Instead, a game with only 30% of the features: was what SSG made back in the RUN 5 computer wargame days
