why Armor destoyed not crippled?

Post by british exil »

Not really sure where to post this thread!

Why is it that when my tanks/panzers get fired at they are immediately destroyed? When in reality they might have been crippled, thus still being able to be use as field gun or as MG-nest.
I've read of account in the east front where after a days battle Russian tanks were salvaged from the battle field and repaired. Also in the western front this was a common occurance. (Death Traps The Survival of an American Armored Division in WW2. by Belton Y. Cooper)

So in theory some tanks should be left behind on the battle field with maybe a broken track, damaged engine.

Was just thinking. After my armor was smashed by Russian armor just as I was about to take the exit VP. Stug's against sth bigger and better armored. Lost 7 vs 0. Last round. LCG Groß Deutschland

You must see disruption as crippled and not all destroyed armor as complete destruction but for time scale in the game they are out of action

Out of scope of this game. This game has quite high abstraction level. Each unit represent several vehicles. To damage all three tanks at once is unnatural. Better to think about destroyed tanks as incapacitated.
If you want more detailed scale, with individual vehicles, armor thikness and slopes, damages, repairs, ammo, supply from trucks etc you can play Steel Panthers(its windows update - SPWAW, SPWW2, SPMBT). But Steel Panthers have a lot more micromangement and many-units game could be extremely slow - I played one single-player game couple of weeks usually. Also AI is not quite as competent with so many details.

Although I'm sure you could find individual examples to the contrary, the typical situation when a tank was hit and disabled during a battle was that the crew tended to bail out fairly sharpish. Being stuck in a damaged/immobile tank in the middle of a battle is a really bad place to be.

Thanks for the replies.

I didn't think about the disruption aspect. Sounds fair to me.
Plus the aspect of the tank crew bailing out of the crippled tank is also logical.
Was hoping my tank crews would be willing to fight till the end for Fatherland and Führer.[;)]

Would have given them the Medal of honor, but that was solved with the first patch.[:@]

No I guess I just have to learn to play better than the enemy. Difficult when everything is being blown up all around.

Once again thanks for your time spent reading and answering my question.

Matthew, one game that did take in account armor cripple rules was AH old Cross of Iron series. There they were disabled ( either through fire or thrown tracks) and cre counters could be made to leave or stay. OF course, most panicked and fled the beejeesus to the rear.
For the pc, Combat MissionII/3 series by BDV also features that. ( although crews abandon vehicles rather quickly, often after one round of combat)
