Modding Data Files?

Post by TheGrayMouser »

Hello, just purchased the game and of course my ist instinct is to set about changing/tinkering with things.

Seems that all the data for units properties ie names attack values , etc etc are all in the CFG files, which appear to be encrypted....

Is there any way anyone can share how one can mod some basic unit properties? ( after all the German team must have access to the data as they are adding in an Afrika Corp mod)

I am not looking to do any major changes (yet) Just want to tweak an attack value here or there, change a units availabiity date, maybe add in a unit or two (like German Cavalry, someones got to fight the partisans after all)

Cheers!

The core data of units, landscape etc. is encrypted.

Why ?
To avoid cheating on that level and to keep the balance of the game.

The Afrika Modders work close with us according to these things.

What can you change in the game ?
The maps, campaigns, sound, music and graphics can easily be changed into what you like.

Thanks for the response (actually wasnt expecting the developer to respond, was hoping a modder would have, he he)

Anyways , just want to state that I respect that the game isnt open to modding (I dont LIKE that it isnt), I dont feel that gamers have any entitlment rights to open files, after all this wasnt marketed as a wargame developement kit.....

That being said i do have a couple points to make about your comments:

*locking access to data to prevent cheating: reasonable but at the same time, its really catering to a rather small crowd of gamers that actually play via email, plus no matter what you do, cheaters (being the crafty insidious buggers they are) will always be able to find a way. there must be other ways to mitigate cheating without locking people out of tweaking their games (in my utopian vision of gaming)

* We can create our own campaigns? please explain how because there is no UI in the editor to do so... The campaign structure file appear to be non openable by any text editor, unless you dont mean you can actually make your own campaigns......

*Hope this isnt taken as offensive but unless the Afrika Mod folks are paid employees, why are they entitled to mod the game with your support(not exactly sure what that support is , tools? , encryption key? , he he) and not joe average modder?
I think it is pretty amazing just how much good stuff comes out when a large pool of people CAN play around with modding.. Lets face it, there isnt exactly a large supply of user made stuff out for this game...

Anyway, hope the above isnt seen as a negative rant or what not, I enjoy the game (loved the original PG games and i am tired of messing around with all the free ware stuff out there that works reasonably well but has to be tweaked/coaxed etc to work on modern operating systems)
With an inboard map and scenario editor this game offers quite a bit, i just think with a little more access it could offer so much more ( and excite people for any future addans planned:)

Cheers!

* oh btw my only true real gripe (as opposed to wishlisty gripe as above) is please look into the slow cursor speed, this is the ist game I have had where i am experiancing wrist fatigue[:)]

Up above is an old thread for campaigns

You have to change the dropdown from 365 days to All.

The Afrika Modders are around for a while and produced nice Mods for several games. This is a kind of a reference and the normal guy around usually does not have this.

Also it is not possible to hand out a different config for everyone who is in the mood of changing some values.

Another point is that we found the changes for the Afika Mod an improvement for the game overall. (e.g. Italian & British Nation added, Desert possible without changing old maps etc.)

Hope this makes it clearer.
