SPWaW is a tactical squad-level World War II game on single platoon or up to an entire battalion through Europe and the Pacific (1939 to 1945).

When I tried to install H2H and run the mech file I got the vid error. How do I fix it?

I seem to remember that vid998.smk contains the intro to SPWAW, and that if the file is deleted the game will, irritatingly, not work (I would rather delete the file since it took large amounts of harddisk space, and it is completely unnecessary since you skip the intro anyway).

After a brief look at where I thought the file should be, however, I did not find the file in my own installation. Here's one bold suggestion:

vid998.smk might have been removed in a new version of SPWAW and replaced with something else (probably spwaw.avi). Immediately after this change, if H2H has not had an update accounting for this, the H2H mech.exe/spwaw.exe will still assume that a vid998.smk file is necessary, and refuse to load the game.

Anyone to confirm or deny this?

Hi! This is in fact the case! ... just copy the spwaw.avi file to the SND/Stream folder and rename it to vid998.smk ....

Then all is good!

But make sure your file prefs have "hide file extensions" unchecked, or you will end up with vid998.smk.avi after renaming without knowing it!! (as I did [;)])

Whoa! My proposition was correct! And all was good and well...

By the way, both the .avi files in the spwaw directory can be deleted, and the game still works for me! Everybody wins.

You guys are great, did exactly as u all said and it works fine now, thanks.

Dont suppose u guys know why the game wont run from opening menu screen? The opening screen menu comes up but nothing happens when i try and click on SPWAW...just curious, I have always just made a short cut to the mech file.

I don't have a good answer for that one. I always presumed the OS wasn't happy with the intro, linked directly to mech.exe and didn't bother thinking about it.
