Map questions?

SPWaW is a tactical squad-level World War II game on single platoon or up to an entire battalion through Europe and the Pacific (1939 to 1945).

Map questions?

Post by Adamo »

A couple of questions about maps:

1. Is there a way to look at the available maps that come with SPWAW? I like to choose a custom map when setting up a battle but you have to set all the battle specs and THEN view the map and then if you don't like it you have to do it all over again.

2. What is the largest size map you can use in SPWAW? And, when I choose 'Large Map', 'Medium Map' and 'Small Map' in the battle generator, how big is each map?

3. What is the utility that is called 'Map Thing'?

thanks

You can modify a PDF (to make notations) and then post them on the internet.

There must be software in existance that converts PDF files into .bmp or .jpeg for posting too, for similar purposes.

I've found that Ectizen's MapThing is excellent for checking/verifying, especially on large or urban maps.  In MapThing's .PDF image its easy to spot 'errors' that you'd only catch in the SPWAW Editor by reading the pop-up info for every hex on your map!  Things like 'broken' roads/trails/streams, 'road+building' hexes (you know, the one's that make your most $$ tanks immobilize themselves by driving into houses [:@]), 'invisible' buildings that result from incomplete/improper clearing of multihex structures ...in other words, things that could ruin an otherwise excellent map.

For those unfamiliar with it, here's a sample area of a MapThing PDF (at 600% zoom):

Using the check-boxes you can include/remove any map elements in the PDF output, and the 'sliders' for many allow you to make certain elements more or less 'prominent' (handy when you want one element to 'stand out' on a complex map).

For smaller maps, or small portions of larger maps, I just open the PDF file, zoom to the magnification (and/or map area) desired, and then grab a screencap of the desktop. [;)]
