Will it work on a NETBOOK?

Post by MajFrankBurns »

Having recently aquired a NETBOOK I'm interested in games taht will work on it. So, will this work on a Netbook? I got PC:Kharkov and Winterstorm to work and it works well. Combat Mission also. And Steel Panthers General Edition.

Theoretically yes, but to be 100% sure, please wait for the demo which should be released soon after the game itself.

I've tried running Time of Wrath on a notebook.
It grinds.
It's not the A.I times or waiting for the next turn, it's the slow response speed of the mouse across the screen, and the map panning.
Soooooo frustrating, it makes the playing experience impossible.
I'm running an asus eeepc 1.6 atom chip with 2GB ram.
It doesn't lose much in screen real estate, as you can zoom out enough to get more than a dozen hexes on the screen.
would be nice if it could.
Hey doom, how about making them iPad compatible, that would be awesome!!!

Well that sucks Agent I was so looking forward to this one on my netbook. I have the same as you only 1gb ram atm will be upgrading soon. I can run Mad Minutes 2nd Manassas on it also but when I try to run the new one Gettysburg it's like you said dragging mouse across the screen and slow scrolling and map panning. They should make these games work on Netbooks first and foremost. [:-]

Thanks D.,
Yes.
I remember the discussion in the TOW forum.
and changed the setting accordingly.
Problem was at it's worst when panning the map, and zooms, and mouse movement (old bullet, not arrow).
Not necessarily an A.I. calculating moves issue.
This was with the initial release and 1st patch. I did not try it with latest patch, as by then I went back to desktop only.

It was nice to see a game actually run on a netbook.
The list is small.

 • Advanced Tactics (compressed 1024x768)
 • Anglo German War

 • Tacops
 • Guns of August (1024x768 then reset to 1024x600)

 • Time of Wrath + Storm over the Pacific (I assume)

This laptop is nothing special and was just a free replacement under HPs factory warranty, which happened to be a Best Buy bottom of the price range option. So thanks for the compliment! [:'(]

Oh ok, netbook is to me more of a oversized smartphone. How cheap regular laptop's are, about 100~200 more than a netbook, and the popularity of iphones why waste money on a netbook.

But to each their own. [:D]

A bit OT.  Netbooks, the ones based on Windows are currently very underpowered to tackle Windows applications.
As lordxorn said, iPhone / iPad is better for light computing.  And the apps that are made for these don't slow the hardware down.
Also these devices virtually have no startup time when you press the power button.  But there are no serious wargames for this platform.

Back to topic. I am definitly keeping an eye on this game as I am a Pacific War Fanboy.

Your sig kind of remind me of a classic on Colecovision, the name escapes me and I can't google it, that was a forerunner for WWII Naval combat strat games.

Anyone remember the name of that one?

Intellivison for the WIN !

WAY OT WARNING lol

OMG Razz your right it was Intellivision the game is called
"Sea Battle"

This is the game that got me hooked on Naval Strategy games.

There was a similar title in Japan for the Super NES, that I acquired through my visits there.

The Japanese make some great WWII strategy games.

Here is a description for it,
""
INTELLIVISION CARTRIDGE [#1818]
Also released by Sears [#4975213]
Produced by APh Technological Consulting for Mattel Electronics
Program: Ken Smith
Instructions posted here | Overlay posted here
Play this game on Intellivision Lives! for Windows & Mac!

CATALOG DESCRIPTION
Destroyers, battleships, submarines, minesweepers, and aircraft carriers! You're the Admiral, and your mission is to rid the seas of the enemy fleet.

Start by setting a strategy. Lay invisible minefields where you think the big enemy ships will travel. But be careful, because the other Admiral is laying mines to foil you...

Battle stations! Now you slug it out with shells, torpedoes, and naval tactics. Sleek battleships are waiting to pounce on sluggish minesweepers. You can't relax for a minute.

But who worries about the torpedoes, you say. Full speed ahead!

PRODUCTION NOTE
An M Network version of the game - called Sea Battle in some catalogs, High Seas in others - was announced for the Atari 2600 and completed, but never released. An Aquarius version was also announced, but never completed.""

Just to let you know that Jomni is wrong about the netbook there are many serious wargames that run on it. ALL my HPS serious wargames run on it. ALL the COMBAT MISSION CMBO, Panzer Command:Kharkov +Winterstorm run on it, CMBB, CMAK, SC, SC2 + expansions run on it. Field of Glory by Slitherine runs on it (though the ai sucks). Spartan also runs on it. Conquest:Medieval Runs on it. Mad Minutes Bull Run & 2nd Manassas run on it. X-Coms run on it. Every DOS wargame I've thrown at it runs on it even AGE OF RIFLES!! Civilization II (best Civ ever) and so many more.

What doesn't seem to run on it are high end 3D graphic models like a Total War or real time games, but, even that HOI runs on it and Crusader Kings runs on it. But, EU:Rome doesnt because of the 3D graphics. I'm still testing many other games but for the most part the majority of SERIOUS WARGAMES DO in fact run on it. I've already got more on its 160gb hard drive now than I'll probably ever play of finish.

Since I like Pacific wargames I was just hoping this one might work on it. No matter as I have a killer desktop that I'm sure it will run on. Would have been nice if they programmed a lite version for netbooks though as they are becoming very popular for children and teenagers whos parents can't afford the big dogs.

It's true, the newest netbooks can run pretty much all our games.

There's a new 1.8ghz model releasing or has been released as well and I think it can run upwards of 3gb of memory. Not sure about the graphics card in it though. I was really surprised at how well Combat Mission and Panzer Command ran on it with lots of units on the map/screen. The only issue I run across is the 1024x600 as those games made no lower than 1024x768 I sort of have to scroll up and down to get the UI portion of the game to show at the bottom. But, it's a minor hassle just to be able to play these anywhere and lightweight portability. The newer models are suppose to increase the screen resolution to 1300 x ??? I believe. They sure are nice to be able to use at work. I can put mine in my lunch carryall.
