RE: RHS Test 13B: 3rd Day - Serious contests

Post by el cid again »

The day turn began with an attack on Yennan Central China by 9 Ki-51s escorted by 5 Ki-27s in company with a Ki-46 recon plane.
No CAP. 9 Japanese casualties and 2 runway hits.

44 Ki-48s out of Cambodia attcked Kota Bahru - destroying 1 Hudson on the ground - causing 99 casualties, 5 vehicles lost - 14 airbase related hits.

24 Bettys and 2 Ki-48 recon planes came in on Clark AAF. 20 P-40s of 2 types plus 8 P-43 light fighters of Philippine Air Force on CAP.
1 P-40 shot down. 4 Bettys lost, 3 more damaged. 1 Ki-48 damaged. 4 hits to airbase related targets.

6 Vengeance came in on Kota Bharu armed with 1000 pound bombs. 2 hits scored on BB Mutsu. 9 Zeros, 2 Petes and 1 Rufe on CAP - but they were too high to engage the bombers. 3 of the Vengeance were lost.
15 Blenheim IV followed up immediately - destroying 2 Zeros - 5 bombers shot down - 2 more damaged. CLAA Katori and AK Nissyo Maru were both missed.

2 P-35s straffed and missed AK Lima Maru at Aparri (Luzon).

3 A-20B Boston missed AP Hakone Maru at Legaspi at the other end of the island.

10 Kates out of Saipan put 4 bombs into AO Robert L Barnes East of Guam. It is heavily damged from today and previous air attacks combined.

12 Ki-21s did a reconnissance in force of Kamen Amur Province - escorted by 9 Zeros. No casualties.

4 Su-2s reconned Mutankiang Manchukuo in the same area. Also no casualties.

24 Ki-36, 8 (???) B6N2 Jill, 14 Kates and 4 B5N2 Q (ASW Kates ???) caused 139 casualties and 10 airbase hits at Pucheng Central China.
The MAD equipped Kate might be a preproduction model (rationalizing) - but the Jills shold be fixed = converted back to Kates.
14 Claudes attacked Pucheng next - but failed to do damage.

RTAF V-935s flew recon over Tavoy, Burma. These planes are early and should be grounded for a week or so.
Same for another flight of V-935s that flew over Alor Star Malaya.

83 Nells and 12 Bettys attacked Singapore. 16 Buffalo on CAP. 2 bombers destroyed and 4 damaged. Here is an odd one: 5 Ki-43 destroyed - where did they come from and why don't they show up on escort? 7 Buffalo destroyed (all by bombers) and 2 damged. 1 Vildebeeste, 1 Catalina and 1 Blenheim destroyed on the ground. 38 airbase related hits.

80 Bettys and Nells led a raid on Baguio City. 130 Zeros flew escort. 3 recon Bettys came along. 36 Army Ki-48s and Ki-21s also came along. 1 Nell lost, 3 bombers damaged. 276 Allied casualties, 5 guns lost, 2 vehicles lost, 11 airbase related hits.

23 Ki-27s swept Laoag Luzon - but no CAP to engage.

59 SBDs raided Johnston Island. 105 Japanese casualties, 2 guns lost, 14 airbase related hits. No aircraft destroyed on the ground as intended either. 3 bombers destroyed, 3 damaged.

5 A-20s missed CA Achii and CA Ashigara at San Fernando. 2 Pete on CAP. No losses to either side.

2 Blenheims missed CLAA Yubari at Singora. No less than 7 Petes on CAP were ineffective.

USN sub S-37 at San Fernando (Luzon) was attacked - and missed - by 4 IJN DD.

IJN sub I-4 torpedoed AP US Grant off the Oregon coast. 34 troop cargo casualties.

IJN sub I-155 missed TK D.L. Kruithov near Australia.

IJN sub Ro-43 torpedoed TK Semirs near Java.

15 000 Japanese attacked 19 000 Allies at Kota Bahru. 1:1 odds, Fort Level 1. Forts reduced to Level 0.
266 Japanese casualties, 9 guns lost, 2 vehicles lost. 48 Allied casualties, 1 gun lost.

7 000 Japanese of the Imperial Guards Brigade attacked the reinforced (but demoralized by air strikes and troop losses at sea) defenses of Lahaina - which include the original base force (a CD unit with minimal air support elements) and part of a RCT totaling 2666 troops - 1:1 odds - Fort Level 0 - 25 Japanese casualties, 1 gun lost - 40 Allied casualties, 2 guns lost, 1 vehicle lost. Loss ratio indicates a weak Allied position - in spite of mountain terrain.

Note we were fooled by transports in the Molokai hex yesterday. Apparently they fled there - or were a deception - and we ran in a cruiser destroyer TF on Molokai - to prevent an effective landing. Instead - those ships went to Lahaina - and we should have raided it - but because we misread the intel - we missed the chance to sink them before offloading.

Undefended Kona on the Big Island fell to an SNLF assault at 26:1 odds. 2632 troops landed.

4208 Japanese at Rabaul assaulted 1842 Allies - 2:1 odds - Fort Level 2 - Fortifications reduced to 1. 31 Japanese casualties, 1 gun lost. 4 Allied casualties.

The Japanese rail head at Nanchang saw an even fight between equal numbers of troops (41 000 on each side) with Japan trying to eject the Chinese - 0:1 odds - 2229 Japanese casualties, 65 guns lost, 2 vehicles lost - 334 Chinese casualties, 2 guns lost. This was my intent - attacking is difficult - doubly so at points where supply is marginal - and a Japanese attack here was foolish on logistic grounds.

He figured that out at Wuchang - where only bombardment was done - 16 Chinese casualties, 1 gun lost.

Two naval landing parties totaling 1400 captured Guam taking only 19 casualties. 1207 Allied casualties, 3 Guns lost, 141 vehicles lost. The Guam Insular Force surrendered - but took two days to do so - which isn't bad - partly because he diverted air power to hunt ships instead of ground support. There is nothing the Allies can do about Guam at this stage.

22 000 Japanese attacked 21 000 Chinese at Hangchow near Shanghai - 0:1 odds - 1000 Japanese casualties, 23 guns lost - 143 Chinese casaualties, 3 guns lost, 1 vehicle lost. The Chinese were lucky with the die roll - and have not yet brought up all available forces. The Chinese lack the logistics to attack - until they take the rail system and feed this position from farther back.

Having failed to screen Canton - two Chinese Field Armies marched right into town - and 49,999 Japanese tried to eject them - difficult in urban terrain. 0:1 odds vs only 13 000 Chinese. 1900 Japanese casualties, 51 guns lost. 15 Chinese casualties, 1 gun lost.

In North China at Yenku - 213 000 Japanese easily ejected a Cavalry Brigade and a minor infantry unit - 21:1 odds - 460 Japanese casualties,
8 guns lost - 597 Chinese casualtiews, 14 guns lost. However - this attack probably means he won't send those troops where they might help him farther South - and we have actual Field Armies in route to reassault. Meanwhile - he consumed supplies on air strikes and full blown ground assault for a fifth of a million men.

Still farther North - two Field Armies had marched into Tatung down the rump rail spur - and 9000 Japanese achieved 1:1 odds on the 13 000 Chinese - who are not in good shape supply wise. 152 Japanese casualties, 5 guns lost, 40 Chinese casualties, 4 guns losst. This is acceptable loss ratio for the Chinese - the Japanese must do better than that or lose in a battle of attrition - which is appropriate in China.

Two brigades reinforced by an artillery unit invested Singora - but did not attack. Instead - somewhat disorganized from landings - 29 000 Japanese attempted a shock attack on the less than 7000 Allies - who are weak and understrength. 0:1 odds. 959 Japanese casualties, 35 guns lost, 2 vehicles lost. 197 Allied casualties, 2 guns lost. The Allies were lucky - but made their own luck. A deliberate attack would have been better for the Japanese - but a shock attack more characteristic - and also doctrinal for just landed troops.

Allied ground bombardment at Kota Bahru was ineffective.

Allied ground bombardment at Rabaul was ineffective.

Allied ground bombardment at Lahaina was ineffective.

RE: RHS Test 13B: Last day, tester comments, restart plans

Post by el cid again »

As you can see - things went well for the Allies - and we have a problem with later war aircraft appearing. Less obvious - we have a problem that air bases where planes arrive all think all the planes for the entire war are there - and won't repair most of the planes actually present. So we will restart. Test 13C will be a variant of EBO - called MEBO - which is almost identical.

Shark's comments, in part:

Restart is fine.

I learned a few things playing an allied player that would actually defend and not turtle up in out of reach places. Taking too much in the opening turn is not advisable.

We did learn something. If the allied player will stand and fight an overconfident japanese player he can do a lot of damage. Your ships at PH got away because I chose to cover my transports and not agressively go after your units, which was the trade off.
