Just tinkering around with this - WW2-Road to Victory as the classic boardgame, "War in Europe" (SPI):

Note that I haven't changed the cities/ports or counters (yet).

A bit bland? Perhaps. I'm just tinkering with the graphics file from the demo, I don't even own the game (yet again). :)

That actually looks "cleaner" to me. Really good.

but rather to skid in broadside, totally worn out & proclaiming "WOW, what a ride!"

I'm afraid to say I'm also a fence sitter on the game but I do like good old fashioned simple graphics. Tiles look nice.
What if you use the Hills tile as Mountain but gave it a grey-ish background colour?
When you get around to the dinner plate icon for cities maybe you can use a 'hatched' system so that this will be visible at the edges of hex when a unit occupies it. I'm sure you already have ideas for a new icon.
The only thing I would change on the units is to lose the double counter/stack image for Corps. It doesn't make much sense in a game with no stacking unless its to help visually pick out Corps sized units?

This is not an official demo, but FWIU is an early alpha build demo that may be "close" to the final release:

Moderators: feel free to remove that link if you don't want that released for whatever reason (as if you need my permission to remove a link that I post on your boards. :)

Edit: removed the link as it was 404'd any way.

That wasn't an official demo and was taken down for the release. Obviously it's out there but we don't consider it a demo for the released version.

Well, unfortunately, the 'issue' is that you'll never have a map in this game that looks like WiE or any other classic boardgame as the map details are very sparse. Someone mentioned rail/road lines, that would help the appearance even if they didn't mean anything. Also missing as shown in this picture of WiE, front boundaries and named labels including city, country, start lines, etc. The map for WW2R2V is a large, mostly empty map.

Your graphics mod may be sparse, but it's definitely an improvement over the current artwork. I too am nostalgic for SPI graphics designer Redmond Simonsen's artwork in classic wargames.

Thanks guys, I appreciate it. I think that we all probably have similar wargaming backgrounds so I just try to reproduce on screen what I'm used to playing on the tabletop. Sometimes though, I'm restricted to what I can do with what I have as far as what the game will allow me to do. I think we can make a few different mods for this one though and maybe one of them will look ok. ;)

Looks good to me, I own WIE.  Why does it looks like some units are stacked?  You cant do that in this game.

That was from the alpha-beta, it was changed in the final release I believe.

Edit: there never was stacking, but the graphic showed a stack for some units for some reason.

It wasn't a demo, it was a rough alpha release with a single scenario.
