Using Fighter units?

Post by JFalk68 »

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to make sure there is not anything I am missing in regards to Fighter units. Basically they act as interceptors for tactical and strategic bombing missions coming against me, having more Fighter units is better in an area. Aside from that is there anything I can do with them besides scout an area in the active part of my turn?

Thanks

You can initiate air to air combat by targeting other air units.

Use enough of them in concentration and you can completely wipe out enemy air units.

There's just one thing I miss with the fighters. When the opponent attack your bomber or tactical air units with fighters, your fighters should try to intercept. I don't think they do that.

There is interception of attacking air units but I can't say for sure how this is determined. It could possibly be a combination of inherent anti-air of the ground unit being attacked along with the proximity of friendly fighters to the target coupled with the strength of the fighter.

There have been many instances in my games when recon and bombing sorties have been intercepted and failed.

If you use fighters to initaite air to air combat with opponent tac bombers, local opponent fighters will scramble and attempt to intercept. VS the AI when I see an area he is concentrating his tac bombers against, I move several fighter groups into the area and they shoot down lots of tac air.

Heya Tex. As a suggestion, if ya want your air game to be a bit more intense, try adjusting your Visibility Range down to two or maybe three. Now ya cant even see where the enemy air are based. In multiplayer, this creates a game of hide and seek, and offers a greater role for fighter recon.

The reverse is kinda fun too, especially in multiplay. If the Visibility is set to, say, ten, then the air game becomes a game of cat and mouse. Now you can probably see many of the enemy air units, but he can probably see yours too. Do you risk throwing your TAC into the assault? Is your CAP enough to maybe protect them?

Have fun. Go Horns.

Seriously? There are people playing with visibility set above 1???  One hex is about 25 miles - 40kms. You MUST use air recon to see beyond that.

Seriously? There is only one way to play the game???

Answer me this:
If Tom is irrefutably correct, then why on earth did the developers thoughtlessly allow visibility to be set to 20?

If anyone wants to disregard the existing systems and mechanics in favor of their personal flavor of "historical accuracy" or "realism," be my guest. You paid your money so you can play it however you like. I wont disagree with you for doing that. But please do not imply that my way or anyone's way is wrong or inferior, as if your version is gospel. There is no right way or wrong way to play the game.

Lighten up, Manalishi. You're liable to take over from Bo or Harbinger as the resident grouch.
