Translating 40 times into SPD ratings in MaxFB

Post by Old Coach »

The discussion in the Madden 2002 thread about player ratings lead me to start this new thread.

SPD Ratings:
If we assign SPD ratings according to 40 yard dash times we consider some simple math. Let's say that 4.3 in the 40 is the top speed and that our upper limit for SPD rating is 80, then 80 SPD would represent a player with 4.3 time in the 40. If a player runs the 40 in 4.3, he is covering 9.3 yards/sec. (That's fast!) A player running the 40 in 4.4 sec, covers 9.09 yards/sec. That's about 1 foot/sec difference between the 4.3 guy and the 4.4 guy. At the end of the 40 yard dash the 4.4 guy has run 39 yards. That's enough difference to get beat on the fly pattern. A guy running the 40 in 4.6 covers 37 yards in the same time as the 4.3 guy covers 40 yards. That's definitely toast on the fly pattern.

Let's assume that the slowest guy on the team runs the 40 in 6.0 seconds. If the upper limit for SPD is 80 (4.3, 40 time) let's set the lower SPD limit for 6.0 seconds at 48. The difference between 4.3 seconds and 6.0 seconds is 1.7. From these numbers, I set a scale in which each increase of .1 seconds of run time equals a 2 (1.7 rounded off) point drop in SPD. A 4.3 guy has an SPD of 80, the 4.4 guy has 78, the 4.5 guy is 76 and so on until you get to the slowpoke with an SPD of 48.

STR Ratings:
I had also set up a STR scale based upon weight but soon scrapped it because it didn't fit MaxFB's physics based math. David uses a formula that calculates effects based upon momentum. His formula uses the player's weight, STR and SPD along with the "constants values" and a random factor to determine who wins in blocking and tackling. Once I understood this, I could assign equal STR ratings to a 260lb lineman and a 180lb runningback. In the weight room the little guy might bench press almost as much as the big guy. If the 180 pounder tries to block the 260 pounder, he will not only have to deal with the big guy's STR but also with his weight and SPD. The way I understand it, at the point 2.0 was released, MaxFB was unique in this regard.
