Louis Drucke = Walter Johnson?

Post by Miller Huggins »

There's something terrible wrong here. First, let me say right off that I have been playing computer baseball sims for many years, back to the days of Earl Weaver Baseball. The long list includes Strat-O-Matic, APBA, Diamond Mind and OOTP. So I think I have a fairly good idea of how these things are supposed to work. I bought Pure Sim several weeks ago and recreated the American and National leagues, starting in 1910. I've played 12 seasons and here are some "career" stats so far:

Babe Ruth (1918-1922) -- .301 BA, 34 HR, 325 RBI (he's never hits more that 11 HRs or knocked in more than 81 runs in a season)
Joe Jackson (1910-1920) -- .314 BA (he actually hit .356 before Landis tossed him)
Ty Cobb (1910-1922) -- .301 BA (.366 in real life. His best yearly RBI total in the sim is 82. He actually has six seasons with over 100 RBI.)
Red Oldham (1912-1920) -- 1.97 ERA to lead both leagues (He was in real life a mediocre pitcher with a 4.50 lifetime ERA)
Louis Drucke (1910-1917) -- 1,910 Ks to lead the both leagues. (In reality, he struck out out about 200 batters in four forgettable seasons.

I could go on and on, but I think ya'll get the point. When Cobb becomes nothing more than a decent hitter and some pitcher named Louis Drucke is Walter Johnson reincarnated, something is screwy. I'll assume I've not configured soemthing correctly or that the Lehman database that downloaded with the game is cockeyed. I've quit playing because the the results are so silly, and I hope someone out there can straighten me out because I like the sim's interface.

Thanks

Wow, you must have either something corrupt or be using a *really* old version of PureSim. I just ran a few seasons (With PureSim 2007 v1.51) from 1918-1920 and the stats looked great. For example, here is a screen shot of Ruth's player card:

I think if you want to compare anything from that time period talk to KG Erwin.  I think you need to download the correct parks from that time period to help even out the stats.

Thanks for the compliment, ak. I'm no expert, just a nostalgist. [;)]

However, as Shaun would attest, getting historical results demands using the historical ballparks AND regions (for the weather effects). These make a HUGE difference in stat results.

Padres Fan has a comprehensive database of these parks on his site, and many of them are already available in the basic game.

Thanks, fellas, but there's more going on here than just wrong parks or old game.

I'm using version 1.51, which I believe is the latest. I used the historical parks that came with the game or created my own using actual park dimensions. I did download the parks from Padre Fan. Ruth, for instance, accumulated his dismal stats in Fenway Park and then in old Yankee Stadium. Anyway, the man would have hit more than 6 homers a year playing in Central Park with a fierce wind blowing in from right. Neither does it seem reasonable that park dimensions or weather would account for Louis Drucke's astounding strikeout total.

That puresimmer got realistic totals for Ruth tells me that the problem isn't in the game's software. The only thing that then makes sense is a bad Lahman database. Does anybody think this is possible? If so, can I download another Lahman database and install it in the game's folder?

Thanks again for your advice.

I have read that certain imported players in the Lahman database have caused wild results, especially in the first decade of the 20th century. I don't play back that far. Do a forum search for more info.
