Texture mapping etc is my least understood facet of modeling so far.

Sorry I don't know anything but blind guesses (possibly insulting).

Did you right click on "Texture" and "refresh texture"? (I think this is just for the editor prog itself so user will see new changes in the view field)

Did you right click material and "assign material" again (per stridor) as final step?
Images should be easier to load at Matrix.

Something simple you may have missed

Have you defined the texture used in the mod resource.xml ???? I am sure you did, just checking.
