1024X600 resolution in W7

Post by RobertH »

Im running COTA on a Netbook when traveling. The native display is 1024*600 which is in clonflict with COTA display limitations. Previously I was running Vista and when the COTA screen resolution switched the system to 1028*768 the display would pan, which was anoying but did allow the 1024*768 window to display on 1024*600 monitor.
I have upgraded to Windows 7 because of the better power utilization (battery life). However, when cota launches the resolution choices are greyed out. I added the switch recommended in the readme ( /resolution 1024x768) but the cota launch is interupted with an error that the resolution is not supported.
To get around this I think the game would have to be patched to support the odd (1024*600) resolution. Or come up

with a way to cheat the Windows 7 resolution to be in a pannable window.

I have also tried the compatability modes.

Any sugestions?
Thanks

Robert,

Alas there is no way around AFAIK. The 768 min height is because we need all that height just to fit the data views in. If we allowed a min of only 600 then you would not be able to access the data and task options at the bottom of the data and task views. I'm sorry.

Thanks for the reply Dave, that makes sense. Im looking using the Windows XP Mode feature of W7. With that hopefully I will be able get back to the pannable view thsat I had before. It was a bit of a pain but it did allow me play when Im on travel etc.
Thanks Again

Robert,

How does this pannable view mode work? I've not encountered it. I don't have a screen smaller than 1024 x 768.

Dave, its like you have a small window(1024x600) in front of a larger picture (1024x768) and you could move the view around. So in COTA if I moved the cursor to the edge of the screen the view would move over the display. so either the top or bottom of the COTA interface would be missing but by moving the cursor to the screen edge the missing area could be reveled. Im not sure what the correct term for this behavior is.

Sounds like an accessibility feature? Or possibly a virtual desktop?

I think it might be feature that was part of the ASUS package resident on the netbook. I killed all of that when I installed a clean copy of W7. Sometimes your better just to leave things as they are ;)
I may still lick this thing but its going to require some more digging...

ASUS may be able to provide it again if you explain how you killed it ;)

If not they may be able to suggest alternative options?

I agree that it's probably a form of virtual desktop. Good advice Lieste. Contact ASUS and see if they have a version for System 7. You maybe in luck. Perhaps then we can increase the minimum to 1440 x 900. Always looking for more screen real estate to play with. [;)]

THe solution involves updating a W7 driver for netbook and then editing bios to enable what is refered to as "compressed resolution".
