But everytime I select map underlay in the MapMaker menu, I get the first map as the underlay...even though I have created this new terain map and saved it as MapScan 0.bmp and renamed the original map (1st one) from MapScan.bmp to MapScan 0 Orig.BMP

Is there anyway I can change the map underlay to be the new, terrain map?

I would say you need a map with contour lines. I wonder how you are going to get heights from the google earth map.

This gives some idea about the heights, but not enough to make a contour map from.

Ok, it can be done in Google Earth but it is very tedious work. I traced the 100m contour for 7 miles.

Here in oblique, with heights three times exaggerated.

I know...but I cannot find a map with contours anywhere. Everywhere I look...nada. I still have to contact the local uni...but on their website it wasn't very encouraging for outsiders and non-scholars...

The scenario I'm making is very much a test anyways...so I'm not "that" bothered about absolute accuracy anyway...after all, the contours allowed in COTA only go to 150 anyway...so as long as I through in what I can...that will do for me.

I only fired up the map maker out of curiosity (normally I steer clear of such things and let other people do them) but I got hooked and wanted to finish. I'll complete it...as a personal thing...it was only for me anyway, so no-one will be able to say "Hey...that's not there" or "Where's such and such a river).

Judge,

head to your local library. Ask one of the librarians for assistance. You may have difficulty getting into your local university library unless you are willing to pay for some form of membership (although it is well worth doing if you have any interest in research). If you use your local library, they will probably be able to order the map you need (if it isn't in stock) for about one pound or some other nominal fee and then you can either scan it at home or ask if they have the facility. Colchester should have a decent enough library I'd imagine without you having to go to one of the big cities to get it done.

I had a look on their website and it mentioned nothing of maps...but that isn't to say they can't get a hold of them...so I'm heading there tomorrow. Thx for the advice

JudgeDredd, your best bet for maps is probably either the British Library or the Public Records Office. If the Army made maps of the area in WWII, you should be able to get copies scanned for you. There is normally a charge for that sort of service.
