2 Questions about WIR

Post by Pham »

First question: Are there any good resources on the web for this game? I never played it before, and am just getting into it. It seems impressive, but a bit overwhelming. The manual tutorial is brief, and I was able to muddle through even though it says to load the Moscow scenario and I was unable to find any such scenario(I just used Typhoon, I think...)but it seems like it only touched on some broad points of the game.

Second, I'm using an Ensoniq Audio PCI sound card, which should support(as a legacy device) DOS games that use 220 I7, but I can't get any sound no matter what I try. Any advice appreciated.

Any help appreciated. Oh, and is there a Moscow scenario?

Hi, Pham. I don't know of any additional resources available, besides the manual. I haven't tried it, but maybe a web search for "war in russia" might find something.

The original scenarios have not been kept up while work has continued on the game. The "Campaign '41" scenario is the only one up to date and usuable with the latest version of the game as that one is the most important. The other scenarios will be worked on later (hopefully).

The game doesn't use sound. Its a bit silly and stupid but SSI added sound to the splash screen before you get to the game. The game itself (when you get to the menu) doesn't use sound, so don't worry about it, you aren't missing anything. :-)

Pham,
Web Grognards has a strategy guide for WIR as well as a large capture file from an old online discussion forum <Genie ?>.
The latter contains some interesting strategy tips and insights into various aspects of the game, such as factory conversion and what happens to obsolete tanks in the pools. However, there are a lot of words to sort through to get to the good stuff, as is common in any forum Image
There was also a War in Russia PBEM club site where members could submit strategy tips. The site seems to have closed but I can send you copies of the tips if you're interested.

The Grognards site for War in Russia is
