I divide my force into 3 moving entities.
1st] I send out a few of my fastest units [not motorised artillery units] ahead of the main force
as far as possible on roads. This has another benefit of catching a just discovered enemy force in its tracks while advancing-in so doing you can use these scouts as a delaying force to permit your main force to freely acquire a good position with little if any, problems. I usually spread out these 'scouts' in an arc ahead of the main force[see below] until they bump into opposition.... then pull the scouts back to a defensible spot/terrain awaiting reinforcements depending on the area's strategic favourability to the advance if they aren't strong enough to maintain a 'enemy-delaying' defensive position versus a much superior enemy.
2nd] I seperate my Div.HQ, support units, Base units and non-AT artillery units [with perhaps a battalion as a reserve/hq guard] and move them to a pre-planned rear base area like a large village or middle of a big forest.
3rd] The remaining main force I move as either 1 long column, or 2 parallel wings, or a central force with 2 wings, all depending on the road networks and how close roads would be to allow a split force to move to support each other if the need arises.
Where you move depends on what scouts hit- seeing a weak isolated enemy to crush fast; seeing an opening to send a small or large portion of your main force to exploit. How you move depends on time and level of caution you feel necessary. It could be a steamrolling juggernaut against a spread out enemy [usually best in open terrain where you more or less can see an enemy if it's weak], or a steady point to point plodding-along advance against strong enemy defences [particularly in covered terrain].
Last tip is to scour large woods/towns in your main forces flanks with light recon units. More often than not you'll catch enemy HQ and artilery units hiding in these areas.
