Question?

Post by Gylve »

Hello! I have two serious newbi Questions.

1: If I would want to move an army from point A to defend at point B but on the way to B they encounter enemies. What to do. Should I just continue with the move order or should I change the orders to attack? With orders delay it takes a long time for my hq to arrange an attack and maybe the situation looks diffrent. Like the battle is 2km elsewhere and I attack just out in the air. I hate this situtaion cos it can take the whole day even if the enemy is far less in nummers! Need tips on how to play.

2: If I should attack a victory piont but I dont know if the enemy is even there or how many they are. Should I first send some scouts or maybe probe attack with a Hq or just try to assult into the unknown? To send scouts or probe cost time... it would delay the real attack with ca 6 hours maybe and it could be enough for the enemies do get the situtaion under control. What to do? Eager to learn :-)

This maybe stupid questions but I really dont know how to behave on a ww2 battlefield :-)

I really love this Game!!! Gonna buy CotA when its out. Very intrested in Crown of glory. gotta love Matrixgames.

What do you really want ? Going to defend point B or beating the ennemy.
To achieve the first, set aggro on low, fire rate to fast and move on. Depending of the size of your "army", send a batallion to attack the ennemy.
For the second, place an attack in-situ, with max aggro. That way, there is not FUP, hence no reorg. You lose less time at the expense of a less coherent attack.

Better is recon first. Do not send an HQ. You should have some recon troops (the ones with the small armored cars). Send them to probe. Eventually at fast speed.
You can also attack with two forces, one screening force up front, with a move order with a large line deployment. One mobile force just behind, ready to hit where it hurts the most. By the time the first stops and engage the ennemy, the other forms the attack.

Neither do I. [;)]
These are OK questions. I think I knew the answer. I hope this helps.

When advancing a large force - eg a Division, I often retain a smaller component ( Bn BG ) under my direct orders. In effect this becomes my reserve. If the main body hits the enemy before they reach the objective, then I have more options. Not only can I bypass or attack with the main body I can bypass with the main body AND attack with the reserve group.[:)]

I think it's well worth chucking a company to the fore to size up the opposition. It might get mangled, but it's better than having a whole battalion/brigade walk into a meat grinder. It does entail a delay before you can give appropriate orders to the main bulk.

I do occasionally try leapfrogging battalions with attack orders (high ROF, high aggro, low casualties) if I think there's resistance out there which I don't want to catch me in transit but think is defeatable with solid action. Don't know how historical that would be. If you come up against really sold opposition, you'll take minimal damage to one battalion and can reconsider your action. It's not quick though, and tires out your troops.

One of the first things I do before sending a battalion into uncharted territory is detach the MG, Mortar and AT sections to defensive positions at or near the Line of Departure. Once the line coy's have made contact I will re-attach the mortar section only if it neads to close the range. The detached MG and AT sections are great for holding objective locations or defensive positions on a ridgeline.

I divide my force into 3 moving entities.
1st] I send out a few of my fastest units [not motorised artillery units] ahead of the main force as far as possible on roads. This has another benefit of catching a just discovered enemy force in its tracks while advancing-in so doing you can use these scouts as a delaying force to permit your main force to freely acquire a good position with little if any, problems. I usually spread out these 'scouts' in an arc ahead of the main force[see below] until they bump into opposition.... then pull the scouts back to a defensible spot/terrain awaiting reinforcements depending on the area's strategic favourability to the advance if they aren't strong enough to maintain a 'enemy-delaying' defensive position versus a much superior enemy.
2nd] I seperate my Div.HQ, support units, Base units and non-AT artillery units [with perhaps a battalion as a reserve/hq guard] and move them to a pre-planned rear base area like a large village or middle of a big forest.
3rd] The remaining main force I move as either 1 long column, or 2 parallel wings, or a central force with 2 wings, all depending on the road networks and how close roads would be to allow a split force to move to support each other if the need arises.

Where you move depends on what scouts hit- seeing a weak isolated enemy to crush fast; seeing an opening to send a small or large portion of your main force to exploit. How you move depends on time and level of caution you feel necessary. It could be a steamrolling juggernaut against a spread out enemy [usually best in open terrain where you more or less can see an enemy if it's weak], or a steady point to point plodding-along advance against strong enemy defences [particularly in covered terrain].

Last tip is to scour large woods/towns in your main forces flanks with light recon units. More often than not you'll catch enemy HQ and artilery units hiding in these areas.

And for more icing on the cake you love so much [:D] go here for even more scenarios/new maps to play on...

Welcome to the community. You can conduct recon prior to an attack and often incur no additional delay to the attack. Briefly as to how this is possible.

(1) Initial and reinforcement units have order delay waived for 59 minutes. This makes for excellent fast recon.

(2) A single recon unit travels much faster than a force. Thus, if a single unit and a force are given orders at the same time, the single unit will rapidly begin to outpace the force.

(3) A single unit will have less of an order delay imposed wait time than a force. Thus, if a single unit and a force are given orders at the same time, the single unit will move out sooner.

My HTTR and COTA mini-guides (above and in the COTA forum) contain detailed discussions of recon and many other topics. Enjoy!
