Guns of August Beta
Hi, been awhile since I was here. Just wanted to say GoA will be ready for beta-testing probably within a week as soon as I fix an XP-only bug.
GoA was updated with some stuff Matrix requested last summer and then was in a bit of limbo in the fall. Unfortunately it simply wouldn't work on anyone's computer except mine. I also had the same problem with Black Powder and even 1813. Since they all worked fine on mine it made it pretty tough to track down. I've been testing the games now on an XP-laptop and GoA seems to be running fine but we'll see when I send the three of them in again tomorrow.
Hopefully they will work and we can start the beta testing.

Frank, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. It is so nice to hear that GOA is approaching release in the near future.[&o]

Not if it's just going into beta testing.
by the way Frank, how about signing all of us up to be testers for GoA?

Yea to the beta-testing idea, sign me up.
Although I'll believe this when I see it.

Never played a WWI game - this could be interesting! Keeping my eye open on this one.

I believe that if there are going to be beta testers, those who preordered should be given first crack at it (no I did not preorder, just my thoughts).......

I always saw beta-testing as something I thank people for putting themselves through rather than as a reward for something. I know I wouldn't enjoy doing it.

They can always say no thanks to the offer......

That's true. Obviously anyone who pre-ordered is definitely interested in the period. Still, they didn't pay to beta-test. Once we're ready to go its certainly fine with me.

Hi,
I'm a longtime viewer first time poster - just interested in what type of strat game GOA is going to be. (I still play AH GOA - which I am sad to say was probably my first love - hence the avid interest).
Cheers

Similar scale to GoA. I tried uploading a recent screenshot but it said the file is too large. Nuts.
A big difference with GoA is the HQs and "Offensives". Units can only attack if they've been activated and to be activated requires being adjacent to an activated HQ. A player can buy offensives and allocate them to his HQs during the bi-monthly build phase. Only 1 per HQ though. A player can activate an HQ every impulse although most HQs only have 2 or 3 capacity. So an HQ can go through its offensives in one turn and it might take 6 months to build up again.
Also, units tire out as they're used. Readiness falls.
The combination makes it hard to keep an offensive going after the intial hit.
Trenches make breakthroughs very difficult. It takes awhile to build them so at first you can blow a level one trench away with some artillery and then attack but later trench levels will be at level 3 and 4.
If you invest in R and D however your artillery will get better, different types of poison gas will become available, assault training will be available and of course tanks will arrive. When that happens even level 4 trenches can be overcome.

Can I join the beta test party too? I've got:

Also have an old Dell Pentium 2 500MHz for additional testing.

I am a friend of beta testers. I'd rather be their friend than be one.
