Iron Storm II - According to 1EyedJacks and Walkerd

Post by 1EyedJacks »

As noted by Darren down below (wierd - since he's also in Astralia [:D][:D]) this AAR is now a joint AAR.

The following info relates to rules:

Agree to all these:-

WITP Version 1.8
Sub doctrine off for both
Fog on
Allied Dmg Cntrl on
Player Upgrde on
Vary setup off
Dec. 7 Suprise on
Auto Subs off
Turn Cycle 1
Facilities expand off
Auto Upgrd 4 Air off
Accept Air/Land Replacments on

As for these:-

Historic Turn On – Are you Sure?
This means you are not doing the turn but accepting the stock turn 1? Feel free to do your own turn if you like. Feel free to attack any Port on turn 1. If you select PH then only one port attack. If you choose Singapore then feel free to attack any ports on similar time zones such as Manila.

I think I'd like to try this mod with the original strike @ PH. KB might stay around for a turn or two depending on results... I will most likely use nearby air support to try for port attacks at Singapore and Manila.

Home Rules

Stacking Limit +50 – Not sure what this means

If airfield is rated at 3 (150 planes) we can only "stack" that field by another 50 planes.

ASW TF limit of 7 ships – fine by me.

Allies agree not to upgrade their 2 engine bombers to 4 engine bombers (I've read a few horror stories about that) – Fine but as listed above I may change some of the Bolos IF they were scheduled to change to 4E. I dislike the idea of a strategic bombing war anyway.

I'm fine with this (I didn't really consider the Bolos that are scheduled for upgrades )

Japs agree not to pull units from Kwantung w/o paying political points to reassign – again, fine by me.

Anything else we just use our judgment, or just ask.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I actually wanted to try this mod out without a custom attack plan to feel the "story" behind this mod by Alikchi.

I like the new toys and the plot behind this mod. I also have not "looked" at where the allied units are (other than what I can actually see from the map display) or at the new toys Walkerd has. I like the fresh feel of this mod.

Below is my 1st strike at PH. Because of the strong AAA presence the BBs have I'll probably keep TF1 near PH for a turn or two. I really want to sink the Lex and those BBs without leaving me open to too much pain...

This is what worries me about those BBs - look at the AAA over Alor Star. 10 percent of my bombers took damage w/o any enemy air defense. Feel the force, Luke...

Here's a few KI-36 Ida DBs catching some of the merchies fleeing from Hong Kong - I really like this touch by Alikchi - merchies fleeing the imperial wraith of the Japanese warmachine...

PH
TF1 will stay around PH for another turn or two. Dec. 7 strike nailed 1 loan PT boat...
Move subs away from shallows and form a rough circle around the Hawaian Isles

Wake
Wake fell as expected. TF7(1BB 2CL 5DD)Surface Combat enroute to Truk for fun and games.

Marshall Islands
Set up Air Ops and add pilots as needed. I have 2 Daitai of Betties here - very cool[8D]
TF15(2DD 3ML)Fast Transport is reassigned to hot Tarawa - I want the isle with the larger airfield.

Marianas Isles
At Guam I'm using TF6(2CL 4DD)Bombardment
INF South Seas Det assigned D. Atk

** It looks like I have all of the components for a nice strike @ Rabaul - Betties @ Kwajalein, troops, transport, some naval muscle, and some additional air power from TF3(little KB).
- I moved a Betty Daitai to Truk from Kwajalein
- @ Paula I'm loading up INF 56th Bde, ENG 30th Special Base Force and INF 2nd SNLF
- I moved an H6K4 Chutau from Paula to Truk for recon
- and formed TF5(2BB 2CA 1CL 3DD)Bombardment to follow TF4(14AP 4DD)Transporting the grunts to Rabaul

PI
- @ Legaspi INF Kure 1st SNLF - D. Atk
- TF89(5AK 3AP 2CS 2MSW 4PC 2PG)Transport - I set air to ASW for the smaller flights on the 2CS and on the larger flights set for Naval Atk as I hope to catch merchies scattering from Manilla and Hong Kong.
- TF19(2AV 2CA 1CL 2DD)Surface Combat - move over S of Hong Kong and hunt merchies.
- TF13(1CL 7DD)Surface Combat will patrol thru Sulu Sea to Makassar Strait for merchies
- Vigan INF 65th Bde - D. Atk
- TF12(1CL 7DD)SC will move SW of Hong Kong & try for merchies

Camrahn Bay
Form TF8(2CV 2CVL 2BB 2CA 2CL 6DD)AC - patrol SE and seek merchies

**Move subs in Gulf of Siam to places N of The Strait of Malacca

Malaya
Oh won't this be fun! This is going to be a slow, grind 'em up kind of campaign.
Units in area or enroute
INF
Imperial Gd Div, currently near Bangkok
56th Div , currently @ Osaka
18th Div, @ Singora
5th Div, @ Singora
38th Div, @ Hong Kong (of course I'll wait until HK falls before I send them west[;)])
21st Div, @ Tiensin
9th Div, @ Samah
ENG
23rd, 15th, & 5th, all @ Samah
3rd @ Pescadores
2nd @ Singora
28th @ Saigon
** I'm still figuring out with paper/pencil which ART/ARM units to send
** I'm still puzzling out wich ENG Aviation and HQ units to send so I've got proper support - everything is scattered about but I knew this coming in with the standard opening turn chosen for this game.

**I've still got a a pair of CVEs @ Japan so I'm sending some muscle from Camarnh Bay - TF42(2BB 2CA 2CL 1CS 2DD)SC will troll through the waters S of Hong Kong for merchies as she heads to Kagoshima. I'm sending the CVEs to Kagoshima to form up w/TF42 and am putting aircraft onboard the empty Taiyo. This will be a fun little unit w/slow BBs and CVEs to plod the waters for merchies and the dreaded Force Z (my other opponent, NY59Giants, really, really likes this unit and that no-good-no-walkin'-the-dawg Boise).

**In China I'm using D. Atks @ Nanchang & Yangku to push the chinese out of those cities.

**In Manchukuo I'm sending all HQ, ENG, ARM, & ART units that aren't tied down to Jehol for reassignment to China. Per rules of engagement I need to spend the political points first but those are going to be tough nuts to crack. What I hope to do is push through upper China and hit India from behind. This is a very, very longterm strategy that will probably change when the campaign begins... All AAA units are going to Moppo or Port Authur for reassignment (again after spending the proper political points). I also set all INF units in Manchukuo and Japan to NO REPLACEMENT.

I will muck with production only after I study the aircraft and LCUs... Things are a little different in this reality with zeros @ a max range of 10, Ida DBs, and a few 4E Japanese bombers - I want to study this before I make changes. With an expectedly long Malaya campaign I think supplies might be tight...

TTFN

Oh yeah - would you like to see the results of Dec. 7 @ PH? You're gunna laugh...

Before getting to bogged down in Malaya you NEED to close northern Java and stop allied transports re supplying Singapore.

Try and make the alllies fight far forward if you amphib in his rear he will withdraw and fort up in Singapore and its dammed hard to take.

I would almost not Amphib Malaya at all but use those forces to take Java early and start a grinding campaign from the North against Singapore.

Not too much additional going on this turn...
1. TF1 N to TF2 to resupply
2. Modified Armament production
3. Changed some of my shipping production. What's cool is all of the CVs will handle 81 planes. I can now see some of the discussion regarding "raider TFs"...
4. Plans are underway for Rabaul - Air Combat TF3, TF5(2BB 2CA 1CL 3DD)Bombardment, and TF4(14AP 4DD)Transport loading INF 56th Bde & ENG 30th Base Force
5. TF8(2CV 2CVL 2BB 2CA 2CL 6DD)Air Combat out of Camrahn Bay is spanking merchies running from Hong Kong (I mentioned this move earlier). I'll send it West later incase Walkerd (my opponent) tries to push East out of Singapore for a little raiding of my TFs heading to Singora.
6. Subs in Gulf of Siam are going to shoot past Singapore into the Strait of Malacca.
7. I'm forming a strong army @ Singora to do a slow but steady push south to Singapore. This will be slow and bloody but I hope to use overwhelming air support and a lot of ENG units to help take down those forts (plus naval bombardment where appropriate) and lots of supplies and support to keep my troops fat & happy as they crush the UK forces... Bwaw-ha-ha-ha[:D][:D][:D]
7a. INF Imperial Guard Div marching to Singora from Bangkok (don't laugh[:-])
7b. INF 56th DIV from Osaka via TF9
7c. 5th and 18th DIV are already @ Singora
7d. 38th Div will tranport over after they take Hong Kong
7e. 21st Div from Tientsin via TF11
7f. 9th Div from Samah via TF10
7g. 23rd, 15th, and 5th ENG from Samah via TF17
7h. HQ SAA and ENG 12th Aviation from Siagon via TF18
8. I'm forming another mini KB @ Kagoshima which will be TF43(1CS 2CV 3DD)Air Combat. I'll have to put some planes on CVE Taiyo (capacity 30 aircraft). Now where is that Foce Z???[8D]

I hear Andy on closing transport resupply to Singapore. See #5 as my stop-gap measure and add unrestricted sub warfare until I think of something better[;)]

I'll also try mines via subs; I've never used mines before so I'll have to figure out which subs to use and look up the rules - I think I have to resupply from a port 9 or better with subs? If any are reading this and have used mine warfare with subs please feel free to share any tips - and TY in advance.

I-165 getting some Lucia...

Orders on 12-10-41
1. Move G1/1st Daitai (27 Betties) to Legaspi from Takao
2. TF86(3MSW)ASW to Laoag from Pescadores
3. Forces assigned to Hong Kong assault are in place. I'll tag-team with the 2 ENG units to tare down the fort.
4. Air production - Nate and Claude factories converted to Zero production

It takes a little time to get my units in place from a standard opening turn but... I wanted to feel the scenario as designed by Alikchi - and it's kind of like taking over from Yamato after the surprise attack @ PH - for some odd reason it works for me[8|]

I was surprised to see Legaspi Airfield reated at 1 - wow...[X(]

Some eye candy - Japanese 4E Bombers!

The INF 55th Div and ARM 1st Tank Bde are @ Tavoy and will conduct a deliberate attack. I actually set the 1st Tank Bde to attack and all others to follow to see if that puts my ARM unit on top of the stack.

I sent TF6(2CL 4DD)Bombardment home to Truk from Guam. I'll redeploy later - probably as support/backup for Rabaul.

TF3(1CL 2CVL 6DD)Air Combat put in @ Paula for resupply and then they are set to follow TF 4 down to Rabaul. As TF 3 is two hexes away it'll be interesting to see if they actually follow.

TF19(2AV 2CA 1CL 2DD)Surface Combat @ 35,46 (SE of Camaranh) will patrol south just NE of Brunei.

TF12(1CL 7DD)Surface Combat are SE of Saigon and will patrol south until they are NE of Kuching.

TF8(1CL 2CV 2CVL 6DD)Air Combat are kicking it in the South China Sea and have been ordered to head west for a quick strike @ shipping in Singapore.

TF42(2BB 2CA 2CL 1CS 2DD)Surface Combat are kicking it at Pescadores. TF43(1CS 2CVE 3DD) are headed to Pescadores from Kagoshima where they've been loading planes and conducting exercises in raiding tactics.
Just a little on the aircraft in this game, my CS Chiyoda had 16 Alfs and 4 Jakes. Alfs and Jakes have the same range in this game but the Jakes carry 100k X 2 while the Alfs are only packing 30k X 4 for payload. Alfs do have a better GV but I'm really using the 16 plane Chiyoda-Daitai to bomb merchies so I upgraded to Jakes. It's pretty cool to see Jakes out trying to plant 100k bombs on merchies[:D]

I also see 3 allied subs @ Saigon. So of course I loaded up on some ASW missions for some of my bombers and I kicked out a little ASW TF for good measure. I wonder if he's just looking to torp some of my shipping or if he's laying mines? Things that make me go hmmmmmm...

I also checked my max sorties for TF 1 which is heading S past PH again. They hit the port again and probably will do so one more time on their way to Kwajalein. I just don't want to run into enemy carriers or big-boyz w/o being able to sorty with my aircraft - know what I mean?[:D][:D]

I'm also sending some air support plus an AR, an AE, and an AV plus additional supplies for Wake.

Production Changes:
Ki-36 Ida 0 X 29 @ Tokyo Halt
G3M Nell 0 X 20 @ Gumma Halt
E7K2 Alf 0 X 5 @ Osaka Converted to Jake plus an upgrade - now 6 X 0
F1M2 Pete 0 X 23 @ Sasebo Halt

I wish I had a better understanding of the ground combat system... I swapped ENG units and will attack again next turn. This should let me compare the numbers and see how things are going. I've got 2HQ 2ENG (all of these are China troops) and 1INF that is SAA. FO is set to Hong Kong but other than my INF unit, the FO is @ 0 right now[8|] And this is a learning experience so I might as well crack a few eggs and see what kind of omlette I can make.

I'm still having a good time with this mod. Of course it's very early in the war but the toyz are so cool! There's freaking sailing ships running supplies - it's so cool! I wanna get a PT boat with a 50 cal and see if I can sink one of those[:D][:D][:D]

So what will Walkerd do? Force Z, Boise, some cool UK CVs, do you think he'll try to put up a strong defense near Rabaul? Oh well, I guess I'll find out[:D]

Game Date 12-15-41

I've split the Soryu off into a seperate TF and am running it to Shanghai for repairs. She's not too bad tho - 19 SYS and 19 FLD.

I'm invading Alor Star this round from Singora. Plenty of INF, ENG, ART, enough support to keep everyone green, and some ARM for good luck. Walkerd has 73 fighters and 75 bombers @ Singapore. I moved my Betties & Nells plus some zeroes to Singora to start pounding on the airfields. In truth I might have already given him too much time to set up. Subs are patroling heavily around Singapore but I need to start pushing now.

Troops are still loading @ Camranh Bay for the Miri assault. I've got a mini KB in the area to send over for air support when the landing takes place.

Ships are enroute to Rabaul also - plus mini KB2. We haven't had a really good ship battle yet but I'm expecting him to be planning something for Rabaul - he knows it has to be on my list of to-do projects...

So many toys scattered about on the board - Burma INF @ Shanghai, SAA INF @ Tienstein - just to give you an example. I think there is much more to this then what Sneer saw when he started his AAR. Supplies WILL be a problem - but Japan looks like it has the strength to take what it needs as long as I am fairly aggressive. Even after starting with standard turn 1 and seeing how scattered my troops are, it still looks doable (bloody but doable). Anyway - I'm going to try to plow thru to Singapore from Singora - lots of troops, lotsa bombers, and lotsa supplies. As soon as Singapore goes down I go4 my supplies (although I'm gunna start woth portions of Borneo right now).

KB is still plowing to Kwajalein following TF2. Air support is always appreciated - specially if you are sitting on a tanker full of fuel - lol.[:D] Walkerd did tell me via e-mail that the BBs @ PH are in sorry shape but I really thing I needed to sink them. All that AAA in an Air Combat TF will not be a good thing...

Troops are starting to arrive @ Jahol from Manchako. I hope to have my China campaign start up sometime in late January.

@ PI I'm still moving troops and supplies in to take out the American troops. Walkerd was harrassing me with his B-17s but I haven't seen thos in a while.

What is the BB Settsu? What are it stats? Thanks...That is one I do not
remember from the history books...
To quote from Evans/Peattie`s {Kaigun}
"Mistakes in operations and tactics can be corrected, but
political and strategic mistakes live forever". The authors were refering to Japan but the same could be said of the US misadventure in Iraq

Here is the alternative history - pretty cool reading and so far, a very fun mod to play. Select Japan and BBs for a discription of the Settsu Class. I'll see about posting some eye-candy on the Settsu in this game which is curently deployed @ Truk.

Walkerd ran a pair of DDs up to Laoag (I think from Manilla) to harrass me and then followed with 3 PT Boats. The DDs capped one of my MSWs doing ASW. The PTs new they were out-classed and ran (that's my story and I'm sticking 2 it).

TF84 had a sub torp an AK near Legaspi in spite of the DDs, PCs, and PGs doing ASW. Oh well - TF is trundling off to home port and the aflicted AK will push back to Legaspi for repairs.

Bombers are hitting Alor Star from Singora, Kompong Som, and Ban Don. Troops are still moving from Singora to Alor Star. Also, I'm hoping that this next turn I'll start seeing Nells/Betties dropping loads @ Singapore.

I formed another TF15(4DD)ASW @ Camranh Bay and am sending that to Laoag as a sweet surprise For Walkerd.

3 INF units of Chinese marched back into Nanchang to I hit them with my local forces and they retreated.

Another ENG unit from Jahol has been assigned to China and is marching to Yangku.

Walkerd noted in an e-mail that he was having supply problems also - which I guess surprised me until I went back and read the alternative history again.

TTFN.

One of my Kates from little KB2 in support of operations near Rabaul put a torp in a schooner today - talk about over-kill[:D] It was cool to watch - I think I replayed it 3 times[:D][:D][:D]

So - I cut loose KB from TF 2 and they are sprinting to Kwajalein to refuel/resupply. Then it's off to support operation cut-throat.

Troops are unloading @ Rabaul. Naval support is softening up hard targets. Air support is available to support operations (Naval/Airfield). INTEL reports 2 enemy units, estimated 5k enemy troops, 51 enemy guns, 1AFV. My trrops are unloading and have been ordered to bombard enemy positions while unloading operations continue (keep the enemies heads down so to speak).

TF90 invasion force is 240miles SE of Miri w/19k troops. Little KB3 is in position to provide air support and TF65(6BB CA 3DD) have been deployed into S. China Sea for added muscle.

I see enemy MLs @ Khota Bharu. I sunk one of them. I'm not too worried as I am not planning to attack via sea. Troops are still enroute to Alor Star (T-Storms yesterday & today).

I'm deploying additional ASW units near Batan Isles

14th Army HQ is loading for deployment in the PI from Pescadores and the 3rd Army HQ is loading for deployment in Malaya from Samah.

I am really having fun with this mod!

It looks like I have enough supplies to get me thru for about 3 months. Resources/Oil - I've gotta get me some more[:D][:D]

Well a lot goes on in 3 days...
On the 18th near Legaspi Darren pushed a small raiding TF thru to spank my AKs. And he got one -

But TF 44 with 30 AK/AP had just slipped out of there - to cool!

I bomb the living crap out of Hong Kong but a Deliberate Attack is again repulsed with no change in fort status - frustrating!

A little day time surface action takes place nera Rabaul tho - it was pretty cool to watch. CL Soya is a magnet for allied fire.

BB Haruna, Shell hits 8
CA Myoko, Shell hits 4

CL Achilles, Shell hits 12, on fire, heavy damage
