How about a Roll Call ?

World in Flames is the computer version of Australian Design Group classic board game. World In Flames is a highly detailed game covering the both Europe and Pacific Theaters of Operations during World War II. If you want grand strategy this game is for you.

I have been playing WIF since I was 16 or so ...about once per week, sometimes twice sometimes every two weeks ...cant count how many games I have played (we usually take about 2/3 of a year per game or so, unless it ends early) although I can say that I have only ever actually reached j/a 45 twice!

Besides WIF I have played quite a bit of Empires in Arms, and a bunch of roleplaying campaigns/systems mostly fantasy or science fiction though ...with just a sprinkling of horror and super heroes ...

After having finished my Masters in Finance I now work in a bank ...and live with my slovak girlfriend (who doesnt mind me playing WIF as long as I dont strategic bomb Bratislava).

Oh and back to WIF for a moment!
Favorite MPs: CW & Germany in that order due to their ability to "do stuff" throughout the whole game ...personally I think CW is the most difficult MP to play "optimal" due to them having to do everything everywhere with highly limited resources...
Characteristics as a WIF-player: Tactically very defensive, but very aggressive strategically -I usually ALWAYS have a plan within a plan for the whole "side" (we never play with individual victory conditions) in order to put myself in a position to gain overwhelming superiority against ONE strategic front/opponent at a time.
WIF the most wonderful, frustrating, uplifting and depressing of all games...

Wargaming since mid 1970's, maily AH and SPI games bought from a great bookshop in the city.
Previously just played Chess (not ranked but did manage to win a couple of lucky games against somebody who was) and cards.
Used to play Classic Wif every week in the 80's. More recently (2002 - 2003) have played Version 5 with PiF and SiF.
Mainly just playing 7 Ages these days while waiting for MWIF. Also, I do like the look and feel of WITP, just need to find some time to have a game against somebody.
Prefer WeGo/IgoUGo strategy to RTS or FPS.
Generally prefer f2f gaming than computer games, but time and space issues makes that desire somewhat impractical. Having said that, I loved ASL and Steel Panthers is so good so that I don't feel the need to break out the boards anymore, and I suspect that if MWIF can live up to expectations it will similarly push WIF into the cupboards forever.

West Virginia, USA.

Been playing WiF for about 13 years, though we haven't played in about 2+ years.  We've had a number of players relocate and families start growing.

I do have the honor of winning a WifCon in Michigan (USA).  I was France/Russia and we defeated the Axis players by 1941.  The German player was a bit experienced and I crushed his attacks in Europe (even with o-chits).  With those defeats the commonwealth/france attacked italy and conquered them right off.  It just went from bad to worse for the Axis from there.

Welcome.

If you haven't done so already, you might want to read the thread Directory for MWIF forum - it is in the top section of the World in Flames forum.

Raising my kids (aged 4 and 8) properly - now we are playing Stratego and Chess. In 5 years I expect to start first board WiF. [:)]

Singapore, Belgian, 42 years.

Have a daughter and looking for a boy next... now I have one more good reason to look forward to it but still 15 years to wait for a WIF partner... maybe by this time the computer game would be ready [:D]

First game Smolensk from SPI and took quite a beating after 4 turns only. 20 years later I can manage almost 10 turns [8D]

Playing WIF is a total pleasure, hoping CWIF will be as good as the original at least between human player. Wonder how any AI could play such a game.

Welcome.

Just for clarity, we have been using the acronym CWIF to refer to the previous beta version (circa 1996 - 2003) and MWIF for the Matrix Games computer version of WIF (I've officially been working on it for 13 months now).

39 years old from Buffalo, NY.

No experience with WIF whatsoever. I love what I see here and I will buy the game the second it is released, learn it, and play it until my hard drive melts. [8D]

What with the high temperatures these days, the melting could occur very soon.

Speaking of Buffalo, I went to the Univ. of Rochester where I learned more about winter than I ever wanted to know. I did acquire a wife there though - and she learned the same lesson. So convincing her to move to Hawaii took zero time.

I don't remember if it was 3 or 4 years ago but we had 7 feet of snow in 3 days. Shovelling your roof in minus 20 wind chill is something that stays with you a loooooong time.

We'll be moving to North Carolina within the next 6 months. I've seen enough winters to last me a lifetime.

Played WiF about 3 or 4 times. Nobody local to play with at the moment.

So greyshaft if you're after a Sydney opponent on a semi-casual basis get in touch via PM or whatever.

""Crush all the existing AI opponents for computer war games.""

At what difficulty? ;) And have you crushed "War of the Lance" on its highest difficulty? And perhaps you would like my mod of "Spartan" ai adjustments. I don't think you would be doing any crushing. ;) I even made one for RTW that will be very hard to crush, in fact you will be screaming for your citizens to have more babies. lol
WE/I WANT 1:1 or something even 1:2 death animations in the KOIOS PANZER COMMAND SERIES don't forget Erik! ;) and Floating Paratroopers We grew up with Minor, Marginal and Decisive victories why rock the boat with Marginal, Decisive and Legendary?

Admittedly I have not purchased every computer war game published. I have my likes and dislikes for time periods and organization levels. Squad level games hold no interest for me.

And it is trivial to modify AI opponents so they have thousands of troops to fight the two you are given. I lost interest in those 'conflicts' when I became bored with Space Invaders (though that took quite a while and a lot of quarters).

But my statement is true to its intent: I have not encountered an AI opponent that I thought was especially strong. Most have glaring weaknesses. I hope to do better for MWIF.

Some would say that Chess is the first war game and I do think that there are some pretty competent chess AI's.
I certainly lose against all of them.

I haven't played the tournament level chess computers, but the ones available commercially I guess are rated under 1800 (US Chess Federation).

Oh ok I'll let you get by on that then. More information was given this time around than in your first statement. ;) BTW I tossed all my quarters into "Missle Command", hated Space Invaders lol. And I certainly hope you can live up to producing a quality AI for such a HUGE type of game. That's a lot to accomplish I think and I agree for this type of game all have fallen short that have tried. I think we had this conversation before though and I don't want to hijack your thread....but, one last thing "predictability" in the AI is it's worst problem to me. Looking forward to trying your game out though. (cept most think I don't buy anything brand new) ;)

Sadly I spent even more money on Missile Command than Space Invaders. It was the improved graphics and sophisticated variations at advanced levels that sucked me in.[:D][:(][:D]

1800, or even 1600, rates as "pretty competent". Enough to knock over your average back yard chess player.

I'm around 1700 myself, and I've been playing chess for some time. I'm considered a "chess whiz" by my
family and friends but of course I don't rate in the serious tournaments.

Steve is a real chess gun. From memory he had a rating of about 2300 when in form. Aren't there 2 main rating systems though? In general I thought in Australia we tend to use the one where the scores are lower for the same ability.

I think you can get some very strong computers now, like the bad boy pictured below. I remember when some family friends bought one of the early chess computers in the late 70s. As a kid, I thought it was an object of wonder. It must have been very expensive.

I wish. The best I achieved was 2050. It required a ton of work though.
