Counting the Torpedoes.

Gary Grigsby’s World at War is back with a whole new set of features. World at War: A World Divided still gives complete control over the production, research and military strategy for your side, but in this new updated version you’ll also be able to bring spies into the mix as well as neutral country diplomacy, variable political events and much more. Perhaps the largest item is the ability to play a special Soviet vs. Allies scenario that occurs after the end of World War II.

Counting the Torpedoes.

Post by Petiloup »

Lately I was playing the Japs and was badly mauled by Allies subs but managed to do some nice naval moves by sacrifying some of my ships to force the Allied subs to use what was left of their torpedoes. Therefore enabling my transports to move freely.

I was glad to do it but now I don't think it's quite logical to have a FOW that prevents me to see where are the ennemy troops but seems I have a spy in every subs for sole purpose of counting torpedoes.

Not knowing would make such sacrifices more risky for possibly no results.

Could we hide that info but for the controlling player?

Someone said this, which *might* help explain why it is the way it is,  dont recall who it was exactly[:D], but it went something like.....this

No you are right in your statements as long as we speak about real world but in a game as WAW we can't think logically anymore or the game doesn't make sense at all

Hi chaps, I think that's a good idea to hide the number of torpedoes left in foe subs.
With your permission Polonthi I'm going to post it in the AWD development forum, mentioning you had the idea, maybe it can be implemented in AWD.

That someone was me... should have said "logically all the time" instead of "anymore". Happy now?

First, I can say that this mechanism is different in AWD. Subs have become like other units: they do not expend supplies (torpedos) when they op-fire.

Instead, when they are fired upon in the opponent's turn, the subs "dive deep" and will no longer op-fire. So it is actually sort of easier to bypass them. In exchange, they have the dispersion bonus which helps them survive at sea and they cost 1PP less.

I think the mechanism works well, although as I recall I didn't like it when I first heard it. So give it a chance.

I'd consider the torp count a result of intelligence and dutiful logging of sub sightings and incidents by naval officers. Just like if YOU are very careful and observant over multiple turns in the game you could probably figure it out 75% of the time as well. I'd personally rather not have the FOW mechanisms reward/encourage such fastidious note taking.

Any "clerking" avoidance is a good thing IMO, it does nothing to enhance play and rewards people who have loads of extra time to gain a small advantage over those with less time.  I learned to like this as well.  Key note, WA subs start at EV1 and Torp1, so the WA player has to make a serious investment in teching up his subs very early when resources are scarcein order for them to be effective; there is no more cheap and easy way to shut down Japan (thank goodness!)
