Defensive Line

Post by Hubbard »

I've been trying to design defensive plays. During this process I have found that DL's and LB's are the weak links.

It seems as though the DL's and LB's don't pay attention to any commmands you give them. Even when given the command of Key on HB, the LB seems to follow the man that is lined up in front of him.

The DL cannot seem to shed a block. I used the defense 43C 43Z R from NMleagues college play book on my custom Kentucky Wildcats. I cranked all the attributes for the defensive tackles up to 100. It still took them about 1.5 seconds to shed there blocks on running and passing plays. There command was pass rush. They did end up being the fastest on the field though and made the tackle in the secondary.

I'll check this out as I work with some playbooks.

One thing to keep in mind is that there has to be a balance between the offense and defense.  If the defensive linemen can shed blocks like Julius Peppers, the game name would be have to changed to Sack City.

Are the defensive ends stunting or taking other routes to the quarterback other than the bull rush?

It still took them about 1.5 seconds to shed there blocks on running and passing plays.

That's about right. It's set at that value to keep the sack totals down. I felt that 1.5 seconds was about as short a time as you'd want to allow good pressure on the backfield, but still allow the play a chance of success.

You can however change that base time by opening the 'constants.dat' file in notepad and changing the values for;

BlockingBaseLine=0.5
BlockingPassBlockTime=3
BlockingPushBlockTime=1.2
BlockingPassBlockStrength=1.5
BlockingPushBlockStrength=1.75

To lower numbers. These values are seconds so you probably don't want to adjust too much.

Keep in mind also that the blocker and blockee combine their skills to determine how long a block can be held for. So you may want to look at lowering the blocking skills of the offensive line instead of changing these values.

Eventually I'll get in-game sliders for all those values.. but for now, editing in notepad works.

Also, because these values have a huge impact on game balance, I ask that if you do change these, they're included in any further bug reports you may wish to make.
