Flanking

Post by Think Blue »

Hello all, I'm a complete rookie to wargaming and I have a question regarding a mission.

I have been decisively defeated about 20 times playing the first mission (Advance to Loenhem, the one right below Tutorial #2) and the best I managed was a marginal defeat... I am puzzled because I sent my entire Regiment (including supporting units) double-time up the major highway on the left side of the map, maneuvered around the intersection with suspected enemy hangouts, formed up for an attack near the city of Loenhem on the western side, attacked with everything I had, secured the objective and defended it until 1800. And I still got a marginal defeat having scored 75 points for taking Loenhem but the Axis still scoring 100 points. Now if I recall correctly, the briefing states that our Allied forces need to have secured Loenhem by 1800. And since I took Loenhem before 1800, I should have denied the Axis 75 points. As I see it, I should have 75 points and the Axis 50 points (they still control the two 25-point minor objectives down south) in the AAR. Which means I should have had the marginal victory and not the Axis [:(]

Thanks in advance!

Hi Think Blue and welcome to the hobby! You picked a great system to start with. You will probably be spoiled forever from playing hexagon turn based games.

This scenario is somewhat tricky, but definately beatable. Check out this thread for some pointers.

cheers,

Thank you for directing me to the helpful thread.  It was good to see that I wasn't the only one who struggled on that mission [;)]

Oh and I just noticed: the subject name is kind of misleading since I originally started to write a question on flanking in regards to this mission... I apologize for the confusion.  (I figured out that there is no time for flanking maneuvers during combat in this mission)

Drive to Loenen (as it was called at the time) was my nemesis scenario on Red Devils over Arnhem, the first game in the AA serie, covering only the Arnhem area.

I played (and lost) more than I can count (i.e. 20 times at least). It was the demo and I still wasn't decided to buy or not. The day I finally cracked the nut (without looking at spoilers), I finally understood that this game was exactly what I was looking for and bought it at once.

This is where I earned the beginning of my sig, 4 years ago.

Welcome.

Well I don't feel too bad now[:)]... I spent about five hours straight trying to get a victory yesterday and I was burned out of ideas. I, unfortunately, could not figure it out and turned to the thread[:(] a little earlier and achieved a decisive victory (although I took more losses than the enemy).

But looking at the thread cost me the satisfaction of figuring it out myself. So from this point on (Advance to Loenen was my very first mission[;)]) I am going to look at the threads after I achieve at least a marginal victory (or if I am really stuck, a draw). The most important lesson I learned from this mission and its threads is that there are more than one way to win.

Thanks,
Think Blue

That's the beauty of this game.

Arjuna,

My only regret is that I wish I would have known about the AA series years ago.

Thanks for producing this game!

and JeF, very true... losing is part of the beauty [;)]
