A world divided: sequel or expansion pack?

Post by marioflag »

I have seen the first time A World Divided on IGN and being a lover of wargames, and being fascinated by the screenshot of this game i'm willing to buy it.
I have some questions: is this game only an expansion pack of Gary Grigsby's World at War or it is a new sequel?
Other question: where i can buy this game, i live in Italy and there isn't any shop which sells or has ever heard this game.I have also seen on amazon and the game is not sold.Where i can buy it?

As to where you can buy, you can digitally download it and also you have the chance to have it shipped to you.

As if it is a sequel or an expansion pack, I'd say it has too many new features to calify it as an expansion pack. Just a few examples: regions have been modified, new sigint and spy system, german subs will no longer rule the oceans even if you invest heavily in R&D, same thing happens to Tactical Bombers and Heavy Bombers. The USA and USRR now have a War Readiness (WR) level that affect their factory output and when they enter the war. US has a non military consumption system that consume supplies for civil purposes, it is based on their WR. Investment in R&D is reduced the first years of the war....

In short, you can use your credit card on this website to buy the game-for which there is no wait because you'll be able to download it in just a few moments.  Also, A World Divided is definitely a sequel, not an expansion of GGWaW: instead of more of the same, what you have with this is something which supercifially resembles the precedent but is actually very different.

Being an Hearts of Iron 2 player, can anyone tell me main differences between these 2 games?
The world map seems that it is more oriented on strategy on large scale (at least in the map, regions seems really big).
Have the 5 powers in the game really different units for example playing as German will i build bf-109 or fw-190 which have different stats than english hurricane or spiftfire or in the game there are just abstract units like fighter, escort fighter, bomber, strategic bomber?
About strategy can i for example close the Straits of Gibraltar to English Navies, or for example will the harbour of Singapore have a strategic importance, or strategy in the game is more treated at a general and abstract level?

They're abstract units: fighter, tactical bomber, heavy bomber, and carrier air group.

There's no Singapore per se, just Malaya. Gibraltar is managed as a "strait" (as are many other straits, including the Straits of Dover, Malacca, etc.), where if an enemy ship tries to pass through, artillery and air units in these areas get a free "opportunity fire" shot at the boats. In my (very brief) experience, a couple of artillery and a plane or two can effectively close these straits. Some ports and other strategic places (Maginot line, Leningrad) are managed as "forts", where it takes more force to dislodge them defenders from the area than in other areas. The only other special strategic aspects I can think of are strategic points, which are distributed around the allied countries (Stalingrad, Moscow, Sydney, etc) so that the Axis can get closer to its victory requirements by winning those.

Much of this is explained in the manual, which comes with the demo of GGWAW. Some what's in that manual has changed in WAWAWD, but not much of what I've written above, I don't think.

I wrote a relatively detailed comparison of HoI and WaW which can be found in this thread (Post #4 and below).
