New player confused about versions, scenarios
I loaded the game a few days ago and I've played a couple of scenarios. Looks really good. Really good. From an old ASL player who has been looking for the same experience in a computer game, and have never quite gotten it, this looks like it might work.
Got it thru ezgamer because I wanted to keep a copy on CD. I tried an earlier version of SP a couple (?) of years ago, but it wouldn't run on my old PB computer. (I have a nice, new Dell now.) I took it back to Babbages. This version has worked just fine.
I am confused about a couple of things, however. I have updated to version 2.3, but I read in the forum about version 3.0. But in the downloads I don't see version 3.0, just scenario manager version 3.0. So, I'm confused. What is the latest version, and what is this scenario manager 3.0?
Also, I looked at downloading some scenarios listed in the scenario download section. But I seem to have at least some of them already. What is the story here? Do I have the scenarios in the download section or not?
Please help. Thanks.

Sir,
The latest version is 2.3. Version 3 is scheduled to be released in the near future. The scenario mananger you see is producer by a third party but I highly recommend it. It is the easiest way to keep track of all your scenarios and not over write an already existing scenario that may have the same number.
As for the scenarios it is possible that either they are a newer upgraded version of a scenario you already have or that since you started out with version 2.3 you already have some scenarios that someone who started with version 1 may not have gotten. I hope this sheds some light on your questions.
As another ASL player I think you will find this a great game. It is not ASL (never intended to be)but an excellent game in its on realm. Version three will have live TCP/IP play which I'm sure you will find very exciting.
Another great thing about this game is the excellent information you can get off these boards form not only the Matrix Staff but all the other fine gentlemen that frequent this board. Matrix has impressed me more than I can say in the last few months. Enjoy the game and get ready for version 3!

Hey JW!
Welcome! If you have version 2.3 installed, you should be able to play every scenarios in the Depot and all those in the game. No scenarios have been posted that work only in 3.0 as yet.
I hope you enjoy the game....Wild Bill

JW,
I also play TOAW-CW and I think that you will find that Matrix is a much more "loyal" war game company than Talonsoft is. I believe that the staff of Matrix will continue to produce excellent games and not ditch wargames in favor of mass market crap as Talonsoft has. TOAW is a great game but I feel somewhat betrayed regarding what Talonsoft first promised and what the delivered. Matrix has impressed me to the point where I can't wait to pay for one on their games. My $.02 anyway. Enjoy the SPWaW game. I know you'll enjoy it and Matrix as I have.

I heartily agree with Drake. I've been into wargaming since the late 60s, (I was a 10-year old kid in 67 when I discovered Avalon Hill). In the years since, there have been many companies that have tried to keep the genre alive, some successful, some not. Matrix seems to be the last best hope to keep the style of wargames I grew up with alive (board games are passe, IMHO, so I'm referring to PC games). I don't want to sound like a cheerleader for Matrix, but they DO offer great support for their products via forums like this, and, to their credit, they LISTEN to what the gamers have to say. Welcome to the forums, and I hope you benefit from the info that Matrix and the gamers have to share. Glenn.

JW has forced me to start looking for new scenarios. But I don't know which of them are compatible
I was looking for new ones at www.dergrenadier.de and I could search for SPWAW Scenarios there. But for which version?
SPWAW 1, 2 or 3? Sure, stupid but simple question?
I have SPWAW (patch 2.3) but I tried a SPWAW2 scenario and it didn't work.
(BTW, where can I find this Scenario-Manager?)
Thanks
Mika

Mika, you must make a distinction between:
Steel Panthers World at War (SWAW), and
Steel Patnthers World War 2 (SPWW2)
If the scenario is for SPWW2, it won't work in SPWAW. They are two completely different systems.
ALL scenarios listed in the Game Depot under SPWAW will play in the version that you have.
NO scenarios from SPWW2 will work in the version that you have.
As a rule to avoid confusion, I always put "SPWAW" at the end of any zip file title, or any SP version I do.
I recommend that to all designers who post their scenarios to the Depot. Example:
riverfight.zip should be riverfightSPWAW.zip
That way you always know where those files go and avoid confusing the versions.
The scenario manager should be on the Downloads page of SPWAW.

Not sure about the criticism of TOAW. The game itself is, in my opinion, a great computer "board" game, just what I was looking for, very detailed, fun to play, not perfect, but what is. Just as with any game, certain aspects can be criticized, but it is top-notch.
As for Talonsoft, I was really aggravated when COW came out probably a week after I bought WOTY. SO I haven't bought COW yet but probably will, just to complete the cycle. But it did leave a bad taste. So if you are criticizing things like that, I agree.
As for SPWAW, I've played several small scenarios and have just been delighted with them. I like the wide variety of scenarios, especially the fact that there are some short ones that can be played to completion rather quickly.

JW,
I like yourself think that TOAW is a great game. What I was criticizing was not the game but Talonsoft in general. The way they released CW shortly after WOTY and how they have all but left behind their wargames in favor of a cheap buck have left a very bad taste in my mouth to say the least. They started with a very loyal customer base with the Battleground and campaign series, they add TOAW series and then ditched them in favor of "kids" games. Anyway I shall conclude this as I hope you all agree we should better spend our time here devoted to SPWaW. I thank you all for your views and look forward to discussing SPWaW.

In scenario design, we try to please all, JW. We include the smaller quick play, the Momo or monster ones, the 2 player ones, something for everyone, since each gamer has his own tastes.
We also try to represent equally all theaters of war. And eventually we will have scenarios dealing with the minor countries too. I think old Warhorse (M. Amos) is working on some of these now.
So enjoy, JW. That is out intent.

Yah, Talonsoft does some annoying things sometimes. But TOAW is a fantastic game. Like the SP Series its a 'forever' game on my machine. Who knows though, maybe Norm Koger will get dissillusioned with Talonsoft and maybe Matrix can get him to join up. It would make my world more convinient. The number of websites I'd have to visit would go down. And maybe a comprehensive forum would get started dealing with TOAW... Whatever, wet dreams are not productive.
