RE: Soviet turn 72
I blew a hole in the Finnish defensive line but I'm sure Karri will fix that soon. My guys are getting tired and I'm running into more full-strength fully-supplied Finnish troops. It's going to be hard and bitter fighting from here on out I think.

Larry,
...perhaps start building entrenchements to the east of them
Hey, that's a good idea. Those troops that are less than optimal strength can be put to use after all. Thanks.

I blew a hole in the German defensive line as well, but I'm sure Karri will fix that too. I'm hoping all these attacks are producing some tired German units because my units are sure getting tired as well.

Comparing the last picture with this one you can see that the Germans have made an even bigger dent in my lines. My dudes are in the red and can't hold on much longer....it looks like Leningrad is going to fall any day now.

larryfulkerson,
I noticed you're from Tucson (AZ not OH). I live against the Tucson mountains, west side of town. I joined the forums when I purchased WITP around xmas. I have been lurking on the OPAWIII forums as I played COW years ago. OPAWIII is on my shopping list but wanted to wait before picking up another addiction....

I'm living in Tucson Estates right now but I used to live at Romero and W. Root Lane. So we're practically neighbors. Howdy.

I've been keeping the ferry-bridging teams out of the fight as much as possible. Also, I have a lot of Heavy-Rifle Squads that need to be lost. I figure that I can make them a lot faster than the Axis can and that my attrition process MUST be making some kinds of deficits in the Axis pools. Either that or I'm losing and just don't know it.
Hey Karri....how about posting some losses again so we can judge how badly I'm losing?
Also, that figure on the production of Rifle Squads.....I expect soon to lose both Orel and Leningrad so the production will decrease a lot.
I read somewhere that humans eat more bananas than monkeys and I believe it's true because I don't remember the last time I ate a monkey.
RE: Soviet turn 73

We've been fighting for Orel for about 20-30 turns now...it won't be falling any time soon. In Leningrad I gained one hex this turn, unless a miracle happens I won't get there before mud. And even so, the prodution will drop by 15%, or about 150 rifle squads. Not all that much in the end...you'd still be getting double what I am.
Anyways as to the total succes of the attrition warfare...well as I see it's both a failure and a succes. Perhaps a pyrrhic victory. For me I mostly attack with panzer and panzergernadier divisions, right now they are not receiving all that many replacements. I dunno how many turns it would be required to get one that has fought a lot(down to 20-30 HRSs) back to full strenght. I think it could take as long as 10 turns...so it is making offensives harder for me.
But, I am only losing I think about 400-600 HRSs a turn. My overall strenght seems to go down 100-200 a turn, with addition of a new infantry division now and then the strenght seems to hover around 36-37 thousand.
Now, looking at your strenght it has gone down quite a lot, and we are at pretty much the same strenght now. Also loss penalties are 100 axis to 400 soviet.
Air war is another issue, and there you are clearly winning. Dunno if I can even get local air superiority anymore. Dunno about tanks and artillery either, I suppose you're doing better in those too.
All in all, I suppose it is hurting you more than me. But without attacking...how can you advance? And letting the Axis build their strenght won't help either.
All I can say is that 1942 will be an interesting year, as I doubt I will have any offensive capabilities in 1943.

It's one of the shortcomingzs of the system that you can't do anything with over-subscribed replacements - in "real life" those bridging teams would have been off to the front a long time ago with rifles instead of hammers!

Interesting that you would say that. I can put them in the front lines as it is now but they would just suffer huge losses....not being trained to fight and everything. Buzz came up with a good idea....why not separate out the personnel from the supply system and have them trained in specific areas of combat....and when they "graduate" their school they have better proficiency etc. than they would have had. Or something like that.
I was thinking of using my air brigades in an airdrop capability but they are all foot mobile only.

Here's a movie of the fighting going on SouthWest of Leningrad. It shows the way Karri is cleaning out the pockets and advancing into my lines.

I wish there were some way to turn these guys into scenarios so we could play them from THIS point forward. Oh well.

Training in the Soviet army is pretty sketchy anyway - the only difference is probably that these guys don't have many rifles and machineguns so it's more equipment related - soviet rifle divisions already start with low proficiency.
Buzz came up with a good idea....why not separate out the personnel from the supply system and have them trained in specific areas of combat....and when they "graduate" their school they have better proficiency etc. than they would have had. Or something like that.
Yes that would be a good idea - have a manpower pool and you can direct it into whichever service requires it. At an advanced level you might also make assumptinos about the education level of the general population - eg a largely mechanised civilian population would generate more and/or better drivers for mechanised units, resulting in higher proficiency.
You could also fiddle with the amount of training given - bare basics through to thorough and various levels in between to give different proficiencies.
I was thinking of using my air brigades in an airdrop capability but they are all foot mobile only.
they lose it when they are rebuilt - IIRC some more come along a lot later on in the piece.
