Tutorial Difficult

Post by targul »

This appears to be the most difficult game I have seen. Either that or the tutorial is too involved. I spent a couple hours in the tutorial and got to a point where you are adding a unit to a division.

Tutorial say click on 5th Division then give it a Special Order. Still havent discovered where the special orders come from.

Read some of the manual hoping but that was kinda worthless. You really need a printed copy and they dont sell one and I am too lazy to go by more ink to print this one.

Finally I said I have been playing wargames for 48 years how tough can it be. So I logged into the scenario and looked for units. Well found Washington DC nothing there but a couple leaders. Annapolis nothing there but a marine. Clicked on Harpers Ferry hoping to find some there. Small contingent not enough for a movement.

I then began inspecting the map for a units button where you can move from one unit to the next so you can be sure you have looked at all the units on the map. Again couldnt find any button even though I did click on all of them.

Game maybe great but the lack of a manual and the extremely difficult nature of this game will make it a loser I think. I will spend a few more hours examining it hoping to actually figure out how to not just burn my Fifty Dollar bill but so far this is a huge complicated pig.

There's a manual in the docs folder. Its sounds like your play the April campaign, the start of the war, the preamble saids that most units are locked for the first couple of turns. in this scenario u need to spend time just building up your forces as the union. Try the august 1861 scenario if u want ahead start.

In BoA the r and e keys rotated through active units that had not moved yet. Think the engine is nearly the same, probably works also.
Favoritism is alive and well here.

Pg 50 and 51 of the PDF manual included with the game, gives a summary of the shortcut keys used within the game. Not sure about the Matrix download version of the game, but there was a problem with the tutorials because of the recent changes in how to form divisions. You might visit the AGEod site for some additional info on how to get started. I had a hard time myself getting my head into the tutorial. see www.ageod.com

You've GOT to hold them back!

I did have issues with the tutorial itself. The main thrust wasn't bad for me because I spent a month or two with BoA. However, the tutorial is waaay too long, and needs to be broken up in to 5 or 6 pieces.

E/R/T/Y keys allow you to cycle thru units.

The game has several docs installed in a doc folder (you can access them from the AACW program group, windows start menu) and a manual is present, I advise you to read it if you are in trouble.

The special orders panel is left of the unit panel. It is a small panel with 3 tabs and several buttons.
In the 'Doc' folder you should also find a pdf-version of the first tutorial, which shows everything with pictures.

I know that the tutorial is quite long and far from being exciting. [>:]
But if it comes in several parts the player would have to play through all parts too, so it would not really ease up the situation, or am I wrong? Your progress is saved after every turn, so you can take a rest anytime. [:)]
The reason why I didn't break it into several parts was that I wanted to show the player not only how to do things (create a division, buy reinforcements etc.) but I wanted to show why he should do it, in context of a small scenario. I think this context is lost if you present every topic in a single tutorial.
But it might be possible to split the tutorial in several scenarios there everyone continues the previous. I will see what can be done. [:)]

Just hit a frustrating spot, it was my own stupid fault but the only suggestion I would have about the tutorial is not let each phase continue unless the proper action is completed. i.e. moving the correct units or forgetting to move the correct units then clicking on next turn.[:-] Great so far.[:D]

Now you tell me! I sat through about 1/3 of it, had to take care of my kid and go sleep. Next day, not knowing any better, I restarted it and just chugged through it as quickly as possible to get back to where I left off. I also noticed that either I did a few things wrong or there are a couple errors in the tutorial b/c I found it impossible to do what the instructions said.

It was no matter, it still helped figure out the nuances.

It is written in the tutorial window 'Divisions 2/4' [:)]
