Ok I started this line of thinking on another thread but I figured hmmm sounds like a good idea at any rate.

Matrix..... I have an idea, but I don't know how doable it is (so I will accept any input).

I personally miss Allied General. I don't own Allied General. When it was marketed my then computer wouldn't run it.
I ran it briefly on a computer which has since been further superceded. Now I can once again say I can not play Allied General.

I WANT TO PLAY ALLIED GENERAL.

I am willing to BUY Allied General. Yes I will pay real cash for a game that is currently free. Yes you heard me I will pay to get something that is currently worth nothing.

All I want is for you to do, is sell it to me altered so it won't have a fit over my new current computer.

I don't want it revamped redesigned altered expanded or tweaked. I just want it to acknowledge an operating system that didn't exist when it was made.

I don't know if my request is realistic though.

I would also like Panzer General and Pacific General as well I suppose. Although I think I will leave off asking for Star General.

These games are currently free. I have no idea of the requirments on you to call them yours. I would say though, that you could be selling them to this guy.

A Mega Campaign or Allied General. They are equal to me right now actually. But I can't play Allied General as we speak.

And no I dont have the capacity to stick an old clunker computer in my home just to play some games that can't handle current hardware.

A 24.95 re released modified to use my current computer wargame is cheaper than a second keyboard mouse monitor and older computer.

And I am not willing to stop at Allied General.

But my question to the rest of my forum buddies. Would anyone else step up and pay for an old classic to be re released.

And yes I can see by the many forums that Matrix does indeed currently offer several other games for discussion. And some even have free downloads.

But none of them are Allied General.

I am also thinking along identical lines for Operational Art of War Volume 1 and 2.
2 runs but it still hasn't fully learned to like my new computer.

Anyone else got titles they want to see Matrix re market cleaned up to run on a modern computer for a modest price?

New doesn't mean always better (it usually just means bugs you haven't seen before).

I have lost track of how many old games I wish I could play just as they were made.

It runs without any problems on my AMD 1400MHZ, guess it is because it requires Win95/3.1.

For panzer general, if you have the od one, use MOSLO to slow your Pc down, while playing it.

Personally i miss Crusade in Europe by Microprose.

Ok Second Front came out, but tha Ai was so stupid, it wsa unplayable alone.

An d USAAF was great too, there is Twelve o´Clock high there, but the AI is still not worth playing it alone and even in MP it still has much to many bugs.

Maybe MAtrix should try this two and bring the AI to a playable standard. I hate ToH for the 8th Airforce flying a deep penetration, loosing over 100 B17s to attack a small airfiled near Hannover.

Ah yes, the underdogs...

Site has a lot of free games.....

That still won't play on so many computers all the same.

Have not heard any further comment on who would actually be interested in purchasing a modified updated new computer friendly copy of an old classic.

But I still stand behind my own declaration.

A 24.95 copy of an otherwise free game re vamped to actually play correctly on THIS computer, is still cheaper than going and spending the effort to get an old computer.

If they games keep their flair when updated I surely would buy the one who keept me awake til early in the morning long years ago.

Recently bought Defender of the Crown, it was fun playing in the good old time, and the updated version had stil the flair the old one had.

The days of playing "Kampfgruppe", "Battlegroup" and "Mech Brigade" with my buddies will never be forgotten. "Mech Brigade" was great, I still have an IBM version of "Kampfgruppe" here on my shelves. I don´t dare to put the disk in the drive, maybe I should seal it

Speaking of the Underdogs site, has anyone had much success getting these games to actually play? I've downloaded many of the games offered but could only get a very few to actually play. They say they have included CD fixes for those that require a CD but none of these seem to work. I've tried desperatly to get the "Future" version of Clash of Steel to run and it just won't do it.
Anyone had any luck with this.

Dave your comment is EXACTLY what this post is all about.

Underdogs has a lot of games to be sure. But only the junk works.

I have downloaded a great bunch of old wargames. Guess how many I am playing. None.

They were all unable to function.

I won't pretend to know aaaaaanything about what would be involved in actually making these games function in a new OS environment (mainly because a person needs to at least know a little about something in order to fake it heheh).

Its precisely why I would pay good money to have Matrix restore one of these old games to functioning status.

Paul or David, what is the companies feelings on this?

Am I barking up a wrong tree. Is this idea currently a "sorry Leslie we have no current interest at all in this matter" sort of a thing.

I have a fast download speed eh. It was nothing at all for me to download a great big batch of games from underdogs. But I turfed all the files when each and every game refused to fuction for one reason or another.

In the case of Allied General, some how I wasnt able to get a certain file to function.

I am unaware of just what underdogs is about, or how they generate income. But its not from giving away free games (not to mention the games won't run).

I have no idea what's involved, but I would think a person could call a free game an open target. Then again, is the original game software even available might be a snag.

All these questions are in my head right now.

What's the position of Matrix Paul?

ITs too much trouble frankly Les:

1) getting the code - in may cases impossible since teh companies no longer exist. In somecases we tried to track down it seems the code no longer exists in a compilable form.

2) Getting it to compile on modern compilers. Many DOS games compiled on old compilers simply won't compile on newer ones, or require a huge time investment to do so.

3) Permission to sell it - getting permisison to sell it assuming you can overcome hurdles 1 and 2 mean that the prospects for being able to get money for your effort is realtively small.

4) Return on investment. As one can surmise form our donloads page, we aren;t exactly making the fullfillment company work extra shifts to fill orders... When NEW GAME sales are in the high hundreds to low thousands for the GOOD ones, then there is little incentive to think resurrecting old titles would be profitable.

That said we do have arrangements with a couple of companies to redo thier older games, but that has proven problematic. We have yet to find a programmer capable of completing such a job in reasonabletime constraints given the financial means at our disposal.

We have no real idea when they might be completed.

Someone would have to do this as a labor of love because of the time involved at 24.95 the person would make about 1.00 per hour or less. Good Luck. I have a CD of PG and PGII with the documentation if interested.
