Questions on AI forces in campaign

SPWaW is a tactical squad-level World War II game on single platoon or up to an entire battalion through Europe and the Pacific (1939 to 1945).

Questions on AI forces in campaign

Post by Owl »

Does anyone have a handle on how the AI chooses forces in a campaign game? Here's my delemma: I want a "real" force for my German army in 1944 - a good mix of forces likely to be around. I could choose a full set of King Tigers and elite troops too. Does the AI choose forces according to how many points I spend and have "in play" or based on some other factor like how many I have to choose from overall (both spent for units and what's "in the bank"). Obviously if I'm going to run into the same enemy forces whether I have all King tigers and the like vs if I have Pz IVJ's I'd prefer the Tigers.
Still, the enemy chooses some strange stuff some times too like a full gaggle of T-43's.
Maybe 15 Tiger II's, SS troops, lots of flak and a few JPz V's isn't too far off?

Hello, the AI has a 'pick list' depending on the stance, meeting engagement, defend, etc. Version 3 has fixed alot of the problems with the T-43 for instance, and other seldom seen on the battlefield purchases, but I still prefer to change the campaign save to a scenario, and wipe out the AI force, and rebuy it, on a more realistic basis. Makes for some veryt interesting battles, and you get to fight against some things the AI would never buy itself, have fun!!

The T-43 was acutally a side point to my main question. Short of lots of modifications, If I spend all of my 5000 points (0r whatever) on "primo" stuff vs spending only a fraction of that on a more realistic mixture does the AI enemy change to match my spending limits? Does it (AI) by 5000 points worth of units even if I don't becasue I have 5000 points available?
Hmm, guess I can test that when I get home. Maybe I should just load SP on my work PC, boss would just LOVE that.

It buys on what equipment you have at the start of the battle. So if you have 1000 points worth of equipment the AI will use that number to deside on its point total by that number at the beginning of the battle. If you have true troop cost on and you have elite troops, this will factor into the total and the AI will get more points.

Hi Owl,

In the long Campaign you actually have two pools of points.

The first is how many points your core force costs plus the unspent points you have in the 'bank'. The AI will only consider the points in your core force. The AI ignores the points in your bank.

The second is the amount of points allocated for your support units. The AI will ALWAYS get the points for your support units, even if you don't purchase any support units.

(Units in core force + support points) x AI/Mission multiplier = Total AI points
