Big B Upgrades
Brian,
Why did you make so I cannot get rid of useless Petes in my BBs, CSs and AVs? I hate those idiotic and stupid creations!
Additionally, I notice that Lunga is a 'dot' base. Doesn't this mean that the AF/Port can not be raised above 3?
Everything else seems to be quite nice. I am on the rampage (as I should be) in December 1941.

If you check the stock DB, Pete's upgrade to...Pete's. At least you can now choose between reccon versions vs float fighter versions [:'(]
Lunga may well be a dot, but that was not my doing - it's just however it is on Andrew Brown's map. The Standard Potential Size (SPS) is what determines the level of the AF/Port. The dot means that it has neither AF or Port built up to a level 1.
By the way, don't be afraid to try your Oscar's (and even Nate's with experience of 80+) against anything except Spitfires, USN Wildcat's, and the AVG - in the early war. Air combat testing showed that they are quite capable of holding their own in 1942 - even against low experience P-40's.
AVG - just beware, they were a hard bunch to tame down, even though I lowered their experience from 75 to 68.

RE: Big B Upgrades
Lunga being a dot base simply means that the current level is 0/0. It can be built up to whatever limits the game allows. I don't know Big B mod's values for that base, the characteristics are different in different mods. If you own the hex, you can click on the dot and see what the base's potential is. Lunga tends to allow a pretty good sized airfield and a small port.
I believe the Pete is a closed off upgrade path. At least in many mods it is.

By the way John, I looked up the DB - Lunga builds to Port size 3 and airfield size 4...
RE: Big B Upgrades
Thanks for the clarification about the dot spaces. I don't know where I got that 3/3 limit.
Petes SUCK! OK--I will try the DREADED Pete Float Fight...puts fear into small birds and nothing else...
I was going to PM Brian and state my happy surprise when I have watched a group of Oscars make mincemeat of Brewsters and Wirraways several times! It was a pleasant surprise to watch. They haven't had to fight anything else yet but I am strongly encouraged. My Claudes have actaully done fiarly well too...
The other thing I like is that the Allied DEI bases aren't heavily fortified to start with. Makes things a little easier to start. I know that Singapore and Java will be a different story but at this point it has been pretty realistic.
I have also noticed more supply/oil centers. Do you have a listing of these?
Note: I thought that I might find Palau as a small resource producer also. I just read a book on that grooup and they produced a substantial amount of phosphate (I think that was it).
Just comments and observations...

I'm John's opponent in this "mess." [:D]
My observation is that the three USA bases have a very high amount of Heavy Industry/Resources/Oil available (10k/10k/30k per base). In a couple of months time (need to get fuel sent first), I will be able to send significant amounts of OIL to Australia and it will not effected American production at all. Is this an error??

You should be able to send oil, etc, to Oz without disrupting US production. I posted earlier in another thread that in the 1940's the USA produced more oil than the rest of the world combined (by a very wide margin), so your only limitation will be shipping.
John - unfortunately, I don't have a comprehensive list of resource centers. The mod mostly uses Andrew's scen 125 as a starting point, then there are some additions borrowed from RHS and CHS, and a much modified USA.

RE: Big B Upgrades
Those ships were illegally acting as Red Cross ships! I HAD to put them down because they were flegrantly (Sp?) breaking international law by doing that. If the Allies had only followed the rules then this war would never have started!
Brian--Which Pete is the Fighter version? I assume the A-model is...
I still want to convert Nisshin to a CVL also! Brian when you do the next version let me know and we could talk about Japanese ship construction. REAL planning not pie-in-the-sky but correct some of the issues...

Well, maybe. [:)]
By the way, if you come across any errors please let me know - those have to be corrected (I tried mighty hard to catch everything, along with help from others).
Also, things like ship path upgrades and the like - I didn't monkey with, they should all be as in stock WitP. If you have suggestions though - I'm more than willing to listen.
My real goal with this mod was to take stock WitP, get combat to work more realistically - get the relative values of ships and aircraft, etc, accurate (so that engagements feel more plausible than stock gives you), plug any major OOB holes (like effectively half the Chinese Army missing) which leads to unrealistic game play in stock, and add richness in as far as getting as much of the starting line-up in place as I could...again so that players are in the most realistic situation as I could come up with.

RE: Big B Upgrades
Likes and dislikes in my two weeks of game play.
LIKES: the increase in Chinese and Dutch LBA replacments; the placement of a base between Ichang and Chungking (though there should be something there to base a defense on); Politcal Points at 100 per day (CHS starts with 1000, but get only 50 per day - IMO 75 might be a good compromise); the increase in the overall amount of P40's (I always felt there was not enough of them considering the amount of squadrons that have them)
DISLIKES: I am a big fan of CHS and AB's extended map, so take these with a grain of salt. [:D] I like the fact that the Clemson/Wilkes DD's get the upgrade in 1/42 to give me an effective ASW force. [;)]; I kinda miss all those diferent size AK/AP/TK (like those super fast AP with speeds over 20). [:)]

Brian,
Michael and I could keep this thread running as we find things with the Mod.
Comments:
1. CHINA--Yikes--I am going to try to clear out the mites that infest portions of the SE China. Will let you know how that goes.
2. Political Points--I too like 100 per day. I am going to try something with them and will post after we get farther into the campaign.
3. A-t-A--REALLY like it like I said earlier. Making all Japanese fighters useful at the start is mighty nice.
Will add to this as I go along.

If there's to be another release, I'll take all these insights into consideration, ...and twist JWE's arm into collaborating with me on his shipping research - to bring out the best scen we can...hear that JWE? RE: Big B Upgrades
Looking at the initial AV at Chungking, I can safely say that it will not fall. [X(][X(]
The SE part is undefensible, but the increase in LCU's available will make it extremely difficult for the Japanese to go far. It will be interesting to see what kind of offensive pressure I can eventually exert after my supply situation improves somewhat...I hope.[:D]

RE: Big B Upgrades
Big B,
Currently there is one thing about your scen 190 (v.1.4) which intrigues me. It involves having Norfolk Island under New Zealand Command. I don't know the actual historical command status for this location and therefore how it is currently depicted may well be correct - however......
Norfolk Island was prior to 1941, and remains to this day, an Australian territory. It therefore intrigues me that in your mod it is under New Zealand Command and not Australia Command.
My understanding is that in 1941 Norfolk Island was under more clear cut Australian administrative control than were the Solomon Islands. If it were placed under Australia Command then, then without need for base construction, one of the 2 at start RAAF Catalina units could be located there (with an AVD of course), whereas the at start RNZAF Singapore patrol unit is not a commensurate equivalent.

Well, best to come clean with it and tell you the entire story.
In stock WitP, Norfolk Is. is under US control (SWPac) - this had to be changed. In the AB Extended Map scenarios - it is Australian Command. I was going to do the same thing for the stock map scenarios, but...
One night, I was taken out to a bar by some guys from a New Zealand Nationalist organization (Stig' and Dinsdale were their names, and a large dark complected chap - tattooed all over, named Kahi - who never said anything and just sat quietly puffing away on a long pipe ). It seems they had territorial gains in mind, and they proposed I cede Norfolk Is to them. I told them "absolutely not". However, they were persistent - and kept feeding me drinks. They pointed out that no American would know the difference anyway, and their flags looked so much alike - no-one would notice until it was an accomplished fact. Then came the bait - I was promised a nice vacation home there, and a discreet bank account set up for me....what a fool I was to have weakened and listened to them. [:(]
Obviously they lied to me, I mean - you noticed, didn't you? AND - they reneged on their promises, I never got the home and the money.
All I can do now is try to set things right, and formally give it back to Australia (sigh).
