Big B,

I hesitate to raise this as I am certainly no OOB expert and there may be a good sensible explanation which justifies this, but....

Scenario 190 (v1.4) seems to have two duplicate air groups scheduled to arrive as reinforcements:

(1)  No. 452 RAAF Sqdn, equiped with Spitfire Vb, Australia Command, scheduled to arrive in Darwin, and a second No. 452 RAAF Sqdn, equipped with Spitfire Vb, SWPac Command, also scheduled to arrive in Darwin but 121 days after the first unit.

(2)  9th PRS, equipped with F-4 Lightning, SEAC Command, scheduled to arrive in Seattle, and a second 9th PRS, equipped with F-5A Lightning, SEAC Command, scheduled to arrive in Karachi 35 days after the first unit.

I mention it only because of (a) your rationale for the "Flying Tigers", and (b) whether those nationalist Kiwis you met also stuck their feathers into this.

I just started a pbem game with this mod as Japan. So far so good but I hate the float fighters. I didnt realise what they were when we started so the first few turns I will have to suffer my already at sea groups launching fighters if I miss standing any down. When they get back to port all my float fighters will be replaced with something sensible if possible.

Turn 1 cost me a number of pilots as buffalos etc shot up my Petes.

I realise this might be the historical OOB but how often did Petes get used as fighters ? Especially against anything more than recce planes ? I have heard of a few occassions that I can only dimly recall - were they used more often than I realise.

One of my groups launched 12 in defense - did this ever actually happen?

That sounds like an OOB error - duplication. I look into it, thanks Alfred.
No, the Kiwis were only interested in territory!

Hi,
Yes, Pete's were used as adhoc float-fighters when airfields weren't available, especially early on. There is another version of Pete (the Pete 'a') you can upgrade them to - which are the original floatplane version.

At game start it seems that almost all the Petes aboard ship are the fighter types - was this really the case ?

I am now in the process of changing them all to a more sensible type of aircraft - at least I will be when the various taskforces dock again. Frankly this is a chore I could live without.

Don't get me wrong - I like what I have seen of the mod so far and this is a fairly minor point, but wouldnt it be better to start with normal petes and let players use fighters if they want ? I would much rather have search or asw planes on my capital ships and cruiser then these imitiation fighters ? If this is the historical setup then fine I can live with it but if it was simply a choce of which version to put on you may have picked the wrong one.

Anyway, as I said I kike pretty much everything else about the mod, so thanks for all the effort.

Yep, that is a problem IMO. They may have been used as stop gap fighters on occasion, but regardless of that, they were spotter/scouts first. As is, the fighter version is the only type on the map, so all shipboard units they have lost their scouting/ASW capability.  Should be the other way around, scout by default, at least on the BB/CA/CS/AVs.

Yes, we can change them out, but campaign game, turn one, either move out with the rubbish and blind, or sit and wait one turn to upgrade, then one or two more for them to come online.

This conversion has obviously not been a popular move. When I reluctantly put out one more version, I 'll have the Pete default set at the original type instead of a Float Fighter.

If only the code allowed fighters to do Nav search, it would be perfect. [:)]

Thanks for all the work you've put into the mod, and all that you are still doing.
