NATO Graphics?

Post by Adam Parker »

What icon graphic options are included with this game?

All screen shots I've seen are picture-iconic. Any option for NATO-style and DYO?

the png files could be fairly easily modded.
(not volunteering, as I'm too busy playing/ learning)

Thanks Vic. Gut feel is I'd love NATO-style but it'd be best for me to buy first!

Any way to DYO or does each epoch (eg: ACW vs Modern) draw on its own icon set?

It is not too difficult to do your own graphics.  If you look at the scenarios in the scenario bank, there are games with other era graphics (e.g., Civil War, WWI, Fantasy).

The mini battles might look ugly though with NATO symbols.. actually i am considering making it possible to set the counter graphic of an SFType seperatly from its combat screen appearance.

I love NATO graphics too and am hoping some graphically-inclined soul might help.

Some UI comments.

a) One icon peeve I am struggling with is the icon symbols changing on the same unit. Have an option to keep the icons appropriate to the unit. If there are more mortars than infantry in an infantry division, the icon should nonetheless stay infantry and not change to a mortar like it does now. I think I understand why you adoped this approach, but it doesn't work very well, particularly in Historical Scenarios when you have your infantry divisions represented by artillery guns, panzer divisions represented as infantry units, artillery units represented as mortar units, etc. I think this seriously detracts and needs to be sorted out.

b) Another little UI request. The Turn History screen - way too much clicking here - need to also have a replay button that plays out the preceeding turn step-by-step with three varying levels of speed. You want sometimes to see the moves and the battles, not just the battles and that takes A LOT of clicking at the scroll bar.

c) Also think about bringing back the scrolling text box from PT to show the battle stats as they happen rather than just the list of icons disappearing - it was a nice way to see the outcome of a battle, I liked that feature a lot, it was a nice cross between a HQ teletype and a boardgame result!!! Or at least having it as an option. Should be an easy-to-code enhancement?

All little mosquitos on the elephant of gaming greatness, of course!

a) maybe i'll add seperate counter graphic from combat graphic for each sftype, but that will be just an editor option

b) i agree, but dont know when and if i'll get around to that

c) i am thinking about something like this myself too.

thanks for the feedback.

kind regards,
Vic

Please, please do - I am defending the USSR from what looks like an army of mortars - which removes the immersion factor in a big way!

I don't know, I kind of like the way the icons represent the subformations.  Helps me keep straight where I put stuff.  Everyone's mileage may vary, I guess.
