Supplies & Reinforcements

Post by Banquet »

Just checking I've got my facts straight, plus a question and suggestion :)

A sub HQ receives supplies from it's HQ, right?

A sub HQ is sitting in a town, with the towns HQ set to that sub HQ. The town sends it's production to that HQ.. in this case the production will be in the town as that's where the HQ is..

So if it's producing 5 light tanks they will be added to the OOB of the sub HQ. What if it's producing supplies? Does the sub HQ then only take supplies from the town production, or from it's HQ, or both?

For reinforcements, are people creating divisions, moving them to the frontline and then transferring the subunits to the division requiring reinforcement? Is that the only way to get re-inforcements to the front line?

If so, although realistic enough, it seems a little cumbersome (although strategic movement helps) Is there any chance of a feature being considered where from the division screen you can call for reinforcements available in the divisions HQ. Every sub-formation shipped (by horse, truck, ship) could reduce the strategic movement points by the required amount.. and the sub formations could arrive in the division as if they'd been strategically redeployed. It would just save the hassle of creating a unit, stocking it up with sub formations and then strat deploying it to the front. Obviously if the division was cut off you wouldn't be allowed to do it.

It seems to me such a system would save some time but maybe I'm missing something?

A sub HQ requests supplies from it's parent HQ. However, if the sub HQ gets supplies from a production center, it does not need to request supply.

Production or any type is deposited into the production center's HQ if there is a path. If there is no path, the production is store in the production center (but not usable). If you look at the production map, it tells you how much is produced and how much is left. Excess production gets stored in the 'left' bucket.
For reinforcements, are people creating divisions, moving them to the frontline and then transferring the subunits to the division requiring reinforcement? Is that the only way to get re-inforcements to the front line?

This is a pretty ineffective way to get reinforcements to the front. The best way is through placement of HQ's and strategic warfare. For placement, set up production to feed directly into the sub HQ's near the front. This works well in the German / Russia scenarios (e.g., Warsaw feeds AG Center directly).

The other way is through strategic transfers (t) (not strategic deployment (s) - the difference is that you move sftypes, not the whole unit). If you put trucks in the HQ or cargo ships, you can transfer large distances (especially along roads for trucks). In the Europe game I am writing an AAR for, my HQ in Rome is directing reinforcements over the Med by strategic transfer.

Thanks tweber. Could you just explain how you transfer SFtypes and not whole units. I don't understand how to do this. Can't seem to find it in the manual.

To transfer SF's from a HQ or any other unit it will need LANDCAP or SEACAP depending. This means you will need trucks, horses and cargo ships in your formation for it to be able to transport anything.

Select the HQ you want to transfer from and click T now select the unit you want to transfer to and click the SF's you want to transfer. You can on the right see the average cost and how much LANDCAP or SEACAP you have left and are using to transfer a number of SF's.

btw, If two units a on the same hex you can freely transfer between them without spending LANDCAP or SEACAP and without the need for trucks horses etc.

Truck gives 2000 LANDCAP and a horse gives 200 LANDCAP. Cargo ships give 5000 SEACAP i think it is.

Note that the LANDCAP isnt the same as the carry weight of a truck or horse.

Basicly there is 3 ways to get reinforcements to the front.
1. Form a new unit on top of a HQ and transfer units with the T button. Then either move it normaly or use the "S" button for strategic transfer where you move the whole newly created unit.
2. Create a new unit at the front. Using "T" to transfer SF's to it from a HQ.
2. Use "T" transfer to transfer SF's to already existing unit at the front.

Note that as soon as a unit you want to transfer to is off the raod the cost will almost explode. There for roads are very important for your line of supply in terms of both supply and reinforcements moved with LANDCAP.

Got it, thanks [&o]

That makes things much easier! :)

Edit: Seems Vic thought of everything in this game. Everytime I find something that seems a bit awkward to use it turns out there's a better way of doing it :)

Basically what I was requesting in my first post is already in the game! I can't believe I was marching units up to the front and transferring them manually! [:D]

Remember you can also set citys to deliver production to sub HQ's but then those sub HQ's will need LANDCAP in terms of trucks and horses to get those unit further out. Unless ofc you simply create a new unit on top of the HQ and do it that way since the sub HQ shouldnt be more then 5-6 hexes from the front to give full staff bonus.

Heh, I did the tutorial, honest! [:D]

I was aware you could transfer subformations between units in the same hex but the part where you could do it between distant units if you had the LANDCAP completely passed me by!

I have my dunce cap on now :)
