Fun...

Post by Terminus »

Just made my first HCE scenario. Just a little test scen with a few ultra-modern ships on either side in the Caribbean. Zumwalt and Arleigh Burke IIa on one side and the most modern Russian frigates on the other (including the Gorshkov).

Damn, the Switchblade and Yakhont are dangerous weapons. If it hadn't been for the Oscar Austin, the Zumwalt would be a sunken wreck! She can defend herself, but those Russian ships carry an awful lot of very fast missiles.[:D]

How does the briefing write-up thing work? I seem to recall it was quite involved back in the old Harpoon Classic days...

Open the Orders Writer (ordwrite.exe) in the HCE directory.

File\Open, select your scenario

Type text in each of the three tabs (Background, Blue Orders, Red Orders)

File\Save

zip up the scen file (.SC?), and orders files (.BL?, .RD?) and upload.

Sincerely,

Friendly Fire Ain't...

Post by Terminus »

Didn't know we had friendly fire in this game... The Zumwalt fired her 155mm guns on a very distant (BOL) enemy ship, and the Oscar Austin was apparently in the line of fire. Didn't know you could shoot down artillery shells with SM-2's and ESSM, either...

Yes, one of the dangers of firing weapons on bearing only launch (BOL) mode is that intervening friendlies are at risk. The 155mm shells would not ordinarily be capable of BOL, but here they're modeled as missiles because of their extreme range.
Didn't know you could shoot down artillery shells with SM-2's and ESSM, either...

Another side effect of modeling the AGS shells as missiles. Although shooting down shells with missiles is nothing new. You might recall Seawolf's claim to fame in shooting down 4.5 inch shells. Although small, shells aren't impossible targets because of their ballistic trajectory and lower speed than some of the supersonic sea skimmers.

Well, them's the breaks, I guess. The Austin was on a direct line of bearing between the Zumwalt and her target. She just got in the way.

It isn't a claim. In 1990-91 I was serving on HMAS Swan and we were tasked to fire two shells at HMS Battleaxe. The shell was a 4.5" radar enhanced shell. we applied 5 degrees of throw off, which the range will be the same but the bearing is 5 degree's off. We fired the first round and the seawolf had a cannister open failure (thank god for throw off cause the range was perfect). However on the second shot we watched the seawolf fly from the ship and detonate. There was no shell splash.
The ocean has no compassion, no faith, no law, no memory. Its fickleness is to be held true to man's purpose only by an undaunted resolution and by sleepless, armed, jealous vigilance in which, perhaps, there has always been more hate than love.

Heh, sure it is, but I didn't say it was a false one.

"claim to fame
noun
1. (idiom) That for which one has bragging rights; one's reason for being well-known or famous."
