Why, why why now?

WW2: Road to Victory is the first grand strategy release from IQ Software/Wastelands Interactive, which covers World War II in Europe and the Mediterranean. Hex-based and Turn-based, it allows you to choose any combination of Axis, Allied, Neutral, Major or Minor countries to play and gives you full control over production, diplomacy, land, air and naval strategy. Start your campaign in 1939, 1940 or 1941 and see if you can better the results of your historical counterparts. A series of historical events and choices add flavor and strategic options for great replayability.

Why, why why now?

Post by BlueMak »

I am almost broke, why release this game now?

I was looking for a new game with this setting for a while now (since SC1), but a few reasons stopped me from buying the other two well known recent similar games. For example I never bought SC2 due to the DRM used there.

So, question 1, if I buy this game from Matrix, will it have the same protection that the other Matrix games games had last year? (when I last managed to buy games from here) where I don't have to be online to install the game or "authorise" it?

2, I noticed in the screenshots that several "minor" nations appear, am I right that one can play as any of them, or do I have to choose at least one major power? (it won't matter much, but would be great )

3, Are there sound effects and/or music in game?

4, No widescreen resolutions, right? Too bad.

5, Every turn is 2 weeks, but during Winter is...3? One month? I like my games long.

6, Are you given the choise to continue the game after, if there is one, time ends? (1945-46 whatever it is)

7, Is it possible to disable the research and/or deployment of nukes, per game?

8, Ships can be moved and operated as land formations or more abstract? If the latter, can they be given specific orders? For example to hunt subs, or avoid contact etc. Same question for the air units.

9, If you ever include PBEM for it, please have at least a secure option, like winSPMBT or something.

10, The AI always follows certain paths/strategy or is it possible to watch it do something different than the last time?

11, I noticed an "event" in one of the screenshots where playing as France you are given three options. Are there more events like that one in the game?

12, eh, that's it.

We roll a d365 at the end of each year to decide on all our release dates for the next year. What can I say, this one came up 205. [;)]
So, question 1, if I buy this game from Matrix, will it have the same protection that the other Matrix games games had last year? (when I last managed to buy games from here) where I don't have to be online to install the game or "authorise" it?

Correct, all our games use a simple serial number system, no DRM or online activation.
2, I noticed in the screenshots that several "minor" nations appear, am I right that one can play as any of them, or do I have to choose at least one major power? (it won't matter much, but would be great )

You can play any nation or any combination of nations. Some are of course more interesting than others.
3, Are there sound effects and/or music in game?

Yes.
4, No widescreen resolutions, right? Too bad.

Yep, though it does look fine, it just doesn't take advantage of the extra room the way it could.
5, Every turn is 2 weeks, but during Winter is...3? One month? I like my games long.

Turns actually last from 1 to 4 weeks depending on the time of year.
6, Are you given the choise to continue the game after, if there is one, time ends? (1945-46 whatever it is)

Hm, I don't actually recall of the top of my head. I'm sure one of the developers will answer this one.
7, Is it possible to disable the research and/or deployment of nukes, per game?

Nope, but nukes are not easy to get and there are many, many other priorities.
8, Ships can be moved and operated as land formations or more abstract? If the latter, can they be given specific orders? For example to hunt subs, or avoid contact etc. Same question for the air units.

There are sea zones and ships are organized into fleets. Each fleet can be either a "normal" fleet or a "raider group", which determines what it tries to do in terms of seeking out other fleets or trying to go for convoys and how hard it is to bring to battle.

Air units are ordered to do ground attacks by you - the combat resolution for interception/air combat is based on an air superiority CRT.
10, The AI always follows certain paths/strategy or is it possible to watch it do something different than the last time?

I've seen variation, though I haven't actually studied it for this in particular.
11, I noticed an "event" in one of the screenshots where playing as France you are given three options. Are there more events like that one in the game?

Yes, quite a few where you can choose from different options. Thanks for your interest!

Regards,

You are not making it any easier for me to not buy this game.

Thank you for the replies and a HUGE thank you for not going the severe DRM way that others have.
I will buy the game within 20-25 days as soon as I can find the money for it.

Oh, and a suggestion, it hasn't be done before but in one case AFAIK, please consider for either a patch or sequel or expansion pack, to include a Globe scenario, keeping the same scale though. It would be a dream come true.

Oh, I remembered one more game that had it though not the same exact type of game. A scenario (well, a few anyway) of Empire Deluxe.

EDIT:
I forgot to ask one question. How is "repairing" of units handled? One thing I didn't like much with SC was that an almost destroyed division/corps would go back to full strength easy, unless it was completely surrounded.

Where the F did this game come from? I havent seen it?!?!

So basically this is SC2 on steroids?

Like War In Europe PC but much better with ships and planes?

What types of units? I couldnt find that information? The summary seemed vague.

This is a grand strategy corp/div level game that includes air/naval/land?

It seems too good to be true... AND EDTIABLE?

But you guys are making WIF also? Similar just 1 theatre?

Also can you add more players and expand the game for the pacific too?
