MRAO Test 12A vs Scot: Air and sub/ASW battles.

Post by el cid again »

MRAO has a strictly historical order of battle - a variation of RAO (M stands for "modified") - which is the Russian active variant of CVO - the base RHS scenario most like the stock campaign game or CHS. It is a restarted game because of some technical issues - including the discovery that Russian active scenarios didn't work in any form of WITP. Matrix has yet to address this - but RHS has implemented a workaround - and this is a test of that implementation. It also has some changes which permit loading torpedoes on destroyers at more locations - and somewhat more correct port sizes in the Pacific area.

The Allied Player is Scot McConachie - a game developer and programmer and enterpreneur in Seattle. He has played WITP in various forms for decades - and played them against me in particular - so he is not going to be surprised by much. He took almost a month to carefully build the Allied first turn - laying the foundation for many kinds of future operations. The time involved was so great I actually forgot the password for this game - and had to discover it - a process that added about two more days. Scot generally returns turns fast - and he is not a Sir Robin type player - so we should see some actual battles even in the early phases of the war. In particular, look for aggressive use of submarines.

7 December 1941 (Hawaii Time); 8 December (Tokyo/Manila/Singapore Time)

The night turn began with I-155 torpedoing AK Mangola South of Singapore. It also missed 3 more AKs. Two escorts counterattacked and scored 1 hit on the submarine.

I-1 torpedoed AK Elna near the Strait of Juan de Fuca (Victoria BC) - missed AK Yukon - and was counterattacked unsuccessfully by 2 PC units.

I-2 was successfully detected, localized, attacked and hit by a 3 DD TF near San Francisco.

USN submarine S-39 put two fish into CA Myoko near Catarman. The TF continued on to Legaspi - where Myoko detached to run for repairs all the way to Hiroshima. In spite of battle reports, the fires were put out - and she should make it fine - unless bombed or torpedoed en route. Still - it was an important diversion of a major combat unit during the critical early weeks of the war - a fine showing for an obsolescent WWI era S boat.

A transport TF moving South from Singapore detected and engaged I-124 - but failed to hit her. The attack may have prevented I-124 from performing an attack of her own. If so - that is how ASW is supposed to work.

The day turn began with 16 Nells out of Cam Rahn Bay attacking the airfield at Cagayan. They met 2 P-35s on CAP. 2 bombers damaged. 2 runway hits scored.

17 Ki-21s, 31 Ki-30s and 25 Ki-48s out of Takao (Formosa) - escorted by 48 Zeros - attacked Manila. 5 P-40s were on CAP. 8 bombers were lost - all to AA fire. 6 P-40s, 3 P-26s and 2 PBYs were destroyed - all but 5 of the P-40s on the ground. 37 hits by 50 kg bombs were scored on 13 ships (2 subs, 1 AR (sunk), 1 AS, 4 AK, 1 AP, 2 DD, 1 MSW, 1 TK). 106 Allied casualties, 1 gun lost, 27 other hits.

49 Nells and 26 Bettys, escorted by 48 Zeros, raided Clark AAF. 5 P-40s on CAP. A total of 10 P-40s were destroyed (half on the ground) as well as a B-17 destroyed on the ground. 18 casualties, 1 gun lost, 1 vehicle lost, 97 other hits. No Japanese losses.

8 Kates - escorted by 4 Claudes - from the CVE force raided Cebu. They achieved nothing - and what they were attacking is not known.

Half of the KB - NW of PH - launched 100 carrier bombers (half Kates, half Vals) and 41 fighters in a strike on the base. 1 P-36 and 15 P-40s on CAP. 7 Vals and 3 Kates destroyed by AA fire. 10 P-36, 32 P-30s, 5 C-32, 18 PBY, 7 B-18s, 3 B-17s and 2 C-47s destroyed - most on the ground. 7 BB hit by 14 800 kg bombs. AA ship Utah, 3 CL, DM Prebel and AV Tangier all hit by one bomb each as well. 21 casualties, 1 gun lost, 141 other hits (airbase related). Note that in this game KB is split into two forces and this is from the Eastern formation.

33 Nells out of Kwajalein raided Wake Island - met no CAP - and scored 1 runway hit. They came in at 15 000 feet due to all the medium AA there.

10 Ki-36 caused 39 casualties to the ROC 37th Field Army in South China. Another JAAF strike by 13 Ki-32s caused 21 more casulaties.
15 Ki-32s caused 41 casualties to the ROC 39th Field Army in East China. Three JAAF attacks on the Hopei Militia Regiment in East China caused 41, 56 and 21 casualties, respectively, plus 2 guns lost.

Three Kates from the CVE force torpedoed AK Dumaguet at Tagbularan [Bihol] in the Visayas (islands South of Luzon). Ten more - plus 5 Zeros and 16 Claudes - torpedoed AK Anakan and AK Dos hermanos, and put 2 bombs into AK San Quentin - at sea in the same area.

Eight Bettys out of Truk put two fish into AK Induna Star (sinking her soon thereafter) - and missed AK Balus - at Kavieng. They apparently had been loading the K Force - there were 90 casualties and 1 gun lost to ground troops as ships cargo (before the sinking - just from the damage).

Late in the AM air turn the Eastern division of the Kiddo Butai launched a strike on Enterprise TF with 69 Vals and 71 Kates escorted by 41 Zeros. They encountered 17 F4F-3s as CAP - and shot down 9 of them before penetrating to strike the ships. 1 Zero was lost in air combat. 3 Vals and 1 Kate were also lost to AA fire, and 6 of each were damaged. CV USS Enterprise CV-6 took 14 bomb hits and 5 torpedoes, and sank shortly after this strike ended - being listed as lost by the game. CA Northampton also took 2 torpedoes and CA Salt Lake City took one more - but CA Chester was missed entirely.

Just before midday 21 Vals and 19 Kates went into PH itself and sank DD Litchfield with 5 bomb hits and 1 torpedo hit. There was no escort - but 7 P-40s were on CAP - and they shot down 1 Val.

The PM air turn began with a strike by 7 Kates and 7 Alfs out of Shanghai on gunboat Peteral. They scored 10 bomb hits which caused heavy damage. Immediately thereafter 18 Betty's out of Bako, the Pescadores, delivered two more bombs into the same target - but missed PG Wake in company with her. Next 22 Nells - out of Formosa - tried to attack Peteral as well - but were unable to locate the target - indicating it had already sunk.

12 Ki-48s and 24 Ki-51s out of Canton put 22 bombs into 4 ships at HK - Gunboats Cicala, Redstart and Tutuila and old destroyer minelayer Tracian. The gunboats were all badly damaged and Tracian was set on fire. Next 3 Nells and 5 Zeros out of Saigon tried to torpedo Tracian, but missed her. Then 7 Bettys had a go - missed Tracian - but torpedoed Redstart.

17 Nells on a long range strike out of Camrahn Bay hit the airfield at Dole Pineapple Plantation, Cagayan, Mindinao. 10 P-35s were on CAP - and they damaged one bomber. 1 runway hit.

7 Bettys out of Truk caused 5 runway hits at Rabaul.

Lexington TF got the jump on the Western division of KB - launching a strike with 29 SBD-3s escorted by 4 Buffalos. These were opposed by 15 Zeros and 7 Petes on CAP. 1 Pete was shot down. 16 SBDs were lost total - mostly to fighters but some to AAA. BB Hiei was attacked and missed. CV Kaga was attacked and hit by a 1000 pound AP bomb. Unfortunately for USN - this did not cause significant damage - apparently hitting the side armor. Still - it was a much better showing than Enterprise TF managed - it never got off an offensive strike at all - and it did actually hit a carrier. Given the vastly outnumbered fighters in escort - it did very well indeed.

9 Ansons missed CL Kashima at Kavieng. 6 Petes on CAP managed to damage 4 of them.

3 Vildebeests out of HK missed CA Chokai at Aparri. Opposed by 22 Zeros on LRCAP and by 3 Petes off ships in the hex, 2 were lost before penetrating the CAP. The third was shot down by Chokai's AA. That it penetrated instead of bugging out in the face of so many fighters is impressive and indicates high morale.

The 12 Wildcats at Wake - which were not on CAP duty when the bomber strike came in during the morning - did an anti ship strike on 3 APs and an AK - putting a small bomb into AP Tafuku Maru - causing 5 casualties to troops as cargo.

3 Blenheims and 3 Buffalos missed AK Yamato Maru at Singora. Opposed by 8 Ki-41s (flying off the airfield without any support present) and 2 Petes (off ships in the hex) - none were lost to either fighters or AA fire. Nor did they shoot down or damage any Japanese planes. Next twice as many planes missed AV Kmikawa Maru and AP Ryujo Maru - this time a bomber was damaged and a fighter shot down. Still no Japanese air losses. Finally a strong and coordinated strike came in - 10 Blenheims, 13 Vildebeeste and 12 Buffalos. They still failed to damage or shoot down any Japanese planes - but 4 Blenheims and 1 Vildebeest were destroyed - and 1 Blenheim and 2 Vildebeest were damaged. The Vildebeest torpedoed an MSW unit and AP Daifuku Maru - while AP Nitta Maru was missed entirely. The damaged ships lost 18 troops and 1 gun to troops as ships cargo.

14 Ki-30s flying out of Singora - escorted by 2 Petes off ships in the same hex - put 9 small bombs into AK Makassar in the Makassar Strait at Georgetown. No Japanese losses. This strike came in in spite of zero air support units at Singora - but few of the bombers flew.

12 Bettys missed AK Parcita at Tacloban.

The CVE force sent 10 Kates, 9 Claudes and 4 Petes to Catarman. They put 3 fish into AK Yochow, which sank shortly thereafter. It sent 8 Kates and 8 Claudes to torpedo both PG Asheville and PG Mindinao in a nearby sea hex. Both are listed as sunk. Late in the afternoon 3 more Kates (along with 10 Claudes and 5 Zeros) put a 250 kg bomb into AK Anakan.

The Western division of KB sent a modest strike after Lexington - 19 vals and 40 Zeros. They met 13 Buffalos on CAP and shot down 6. The Buffalos got 2 Zeros and 2 of the Vals. The Vals then put 10 bombs into Lex - many of them 60 kg - but about 4 were 250 kg - and she was set on fire. Although it is hard to credit - apparently an identical strike came immediately thereafter - and had exactly the same result.

40 Kates went into PH unescorted - met 7 P-40s on CAP - and 4 were shot down. They put one fish into AVD McFarland - but that caused heavy damage. Apparently they got ahead of the main - coordinated strike - of 18 Vals and 20 Kates escorted by 39 Zeros. They met the same 7 P-40s on CAP - and lost one Zero to them. 6 of the P-40s were shot down. AP Jagersfontein was sunk by 12 bombs and 2 torpedoes - and many more hits were possible - but the planes could no longer find the (sunk) target.

9 Ki-48s and 23 Ki-51s out of Canton put 6 bombs into gunboat Cicala - and missed Redstart - at HK. Immediately therafter the same TF was hit by 12 Bettys out of Bako - and they could no longer find Cicala - but torpedoed old DM Tracian.

13 Ki-30s, 7 Kates and 18 Ki-27s out of Shanghai missed Peteral - apparently because it was already sunk.

At the end of the day there was a small surface action at Legaspi between CL Tama and 4 DD and AK Sarangami, which sank after 31 hits at long range.

A similar action occurred at Cagayan between a larger force of 4 CA (Mogami, Suzuya, Mikuma and Kumano), 4 DD and AP Luzon - which sank after 42 hits.

Then ancient pre WWI armored cruisers Iwate and Idzumo finished off PG Wake near Shanghai with 3 hits.

CD Guns at Wake fired 501 and scored an incredible 70 hits on six naval units - 2 PC, 1 AK, 1 AP, 1 DE and 1 MSW. 261 casualties and 2 guns lost. Allied ground forces lost 9 casualties and 1 gun, apparently to counterbattery fire from ships.

Unopposed landings occurred at Tarawa, Hollandia, French Frigate Shoals, Legaspi and Stroeng Trang (Cambodia). Invasion forces landed at friendly port Singora.

Opposed landings occurred at Kavieng, Wake, Aparri, Guam, and Johnston Island.

Ground assault achieved 31:1 odds at Wake - and captured the island. 102 Japanese casualties, 1 gun lost, 2 vehicles lost. 1914 Allied casualties, 58 guns lost, 1 vehicle lost. 6 F4F-3 destroyed on the ground.

Ground assault failed at Wuchang/Wuhan in Central China. 1113 Japanese casualties, 32 guns lost, 1 vehicle lost. 91 Allied casualties and 3 guns lost. Apparently a reinforcing Field Army arrived in the hex.

Ground assault at Sinyang, Central China achieved only 2:1 odds - but drove the enemy from the hex. 423 Japanese casualties and 9 guns lost to 83 Allied casualties and 1 gun lost.

Ground assault at HK failed - most Japanese units failed to enter the hex - but show various march distances to that end. 255 japanese casualties and 9 guns lost to 51 Allied casualties and 3 guns lost.

Ground assault at Johnston Island achieved 49:1 odds and captured it. 3 B-18s and 4 PBYs destroyed on the ground. 63 Japanese casualties, 2 guns lost and 1 vehicle lost. 972 Allied casualties, 7 guns lost and 1 vehicle lost.

Undefended French Frigate Shoal, Kavieng and Tarawa were captured. Note that resistence was expected at Kavieng by K force - but it had boarded ships - one of which was sunk by air attack.

After a delay due to health issues, working on an election and working on a China game system, Scot got around to doing another turn.

8 December 1941 (Hawaii) 9 December (Far East)

The night turn began with landings at Aparri (192 casualties) and Legaspi (1170 casualties - not a typo - the most I ever saw - but it is a BIG landing).

USN sub S-39 then tried to torpedo CVL Zuiho also at Legaspi - but missed. 8 DD counterattacked - and also missed.

Next a night action occurred at Aparri. CA Maya, CA Chokai, CA Ashigara, CL Kuma and 12 DD - an entire flotilla - engaged the RN force from HK - DD Scout, DD Thanet and 3 PT units. Scout was torpedoed and sunk - Thanet was hit by 29 shells - mainly 8 inch. Maya took one hit from 4 inch.
These two forced immediately reengaged - and the rest of the RN units were sunk. Not hits scored on IJN vessels - but lots of ammunition and torpedoes were expended.

BB Nagato (with one DD) and BB Mutsu (with one DD) separately shelled Guam. These two continued on their way to Truk - for future operations. 47 casualties, 4 guns lost, 7 hits; then 18 casualties, 1 vehicle lost, and 6 more hits.

Pre dawn landings cost 115 casualties at Aparri and 481 at Legaspi.

Two small TFs lost 53 and 19 casualties at Guam.

I-162 torpedoed AK Enggano South of Singapore.

USN S-37 hit a mine at Masbate.

CVL Ryujo hit a mine at Legaspi.

The CVL force at Legaspi detected, attacked and hit S-39.

USN sub Salmon attacked a DD at Laoag - but torpedoes failed to detonate.

Dutch sub KXII torpedoed the Mekong barge group South of Saigon.

The day turn began with 16 Ki-48s raiding Georgetown - scoring 1 runway hit. No CAP.
9 Ki-21s came in next - 21 casualties - 4 port related hits -- 1 bomber shot down by AA fire.

17 Nells escorted by 28 Zeros made a high altitude raid on Singapore (to evade AA fire). 2 airbase related hits. 18 Buffalos on CAP - 7 shot down. 1 bomber destroyed by AA fire.

8 Kates, 18 Claudes and 5 Zeros from the CVL force at Catarman raided Manila. This was not the plan. 23 P-40s and 7 P-35s cut them up badly:
8 Claudes, 1 Zero and 5 Kates were lost - no hits scored. 1 P-40 and 1 P-35 also shot down. This turned out to matter: the US fighters were tired when the next raid came in.
9 Ki-21s, 28 Ki-30s, 48 Nells and 91 Zeros came in out of Takao Formosa. 6 P-35s adn 22 P-40s on CAP now (that is, one less because of being shot down in both cases). 6 P-35s and 16 P-40s shot down, 1 B-17 destroyed on the ground. One 50 kg bomb hit on DD Pillsbury and the Philippine Army LCP Company. 33 casualties, 1 vehicle lost. 20 other hits.

27 Bettys raided Clark - without escort. 18 P-40s on CAP. 4 Bettys lost. No damage to target.

6 IL-4s and 20 SB-2s failed to harm the IJA 13th Division in China- they came in too high.

2 JAAF raids on the Hopei Militia Regiment in East China caused 10 and 29 casualties, 1 gun lost.

3 B-17s out of Manila attacked and missed CVL Zuiho at Catarman. 12 Claudes, 1 Zero and 10 Petes on CAP. All 3 bombers were damaged but all penetrated to attack.

12 Vildebeestes with 10 Buffalos on escort ran in on 3 DD at Singora - missing all - thank goodness - these are torpedo bombers. 11 Ki-43s and 2 Petes on CAP. 1 Buffalo shot down.

2 B-17s and 3 B-18s out of PH attacked ML Gogokaku Maru South of Oahu. No damage to either side.

4 Blenheims covered by 6 Buffalos missed CA Furutaka at singora. The same CAP - 11 Ki-43s and 2 Petes - damaged one Buffalo. The cruiser damaged 3 bombers.

KB detected, attacked and sank CA Northhampton - it sent out a second raid that could no longer find the target. Lexington was not found - but many cruisers ran SW from the battle area - are now far NW of Johnston Island - and she might be among them. Or she might have been scuttled. Air recon makes it pretty clear she didn't try to return to PH. We will go hunting cruisers tomorrow - and maybe we will find her?

The CVL force at Catarman sent 8 Kates, 3 Zeros and 9 Claudes. They missed 2 AKs and torpedoed AK Panay at Tagbuilaran.
Later 8 Kates, 6 Claudes and 2 Zeros torpedoed AK Norse Carrier - and missed already damaged AK Panay - at the same place.
Right after that, 11 Bettys out of Palau torpedoed and sank AK Governor Smith - and missed two more AKs - at the same place.

14 Bettys on a long range strike put a 250 kg bomb into AK Elcano at Tacloban.

9 Nells out of Indochina put a torpedo into TK Agwiworld and two more into PG Tulsa - sinking her - but missed an AK at Puerto Princessa (Palawan).
Later 10 more were no longer able to find PG Tulsa or AK Agwiworld - probably meaning both were sunk.

31 Ki-43s out of Hanoi swept Kunming - which intel said had lots of fighters. No CAP. 5 damaged by flak.

7 Kates caused 2 runway hits at Pucheng.

5 ROCAF Hawks failed to harm the 13th Division in China.

3 Ansons - from Rabaul - missed CL Kashima at Kavieng.

2 B-18s from PH mised ML Gogoku Maru far South of Oahu.
2 B-17s repeated the process.

2 B-17s out of Manila, escorted by 4 P-35s and 2 P-40s, missed an AK at Legaspi. Only 5 Petes on CAP - these managed to damage one of the B-17s.

10 Vildebeeste escorted by 11 Buffalos managed to miss 3 CA at Singora. 2 Petes and 10 Ki-43s on CAP. 4 Buffalos and 5 bombers shot down by fighters or AAA. No Japanese planes damaged or lost.

9 Nells out of Bangkok put two fish into a river tanker - and missed another - at Rangoon. 11 Buffalos on CAP achieved nothing because the Nells were too low to engage.
6 more came back and torpedoed AR Haitan and AK Federlock. 1 was damaged - as was the Buffalo that did the deed.

The day air turns ended as they had begun - with an air strike from the CVL force on Manila. 7 Kates, 5 Zeros and 14 Claudes came in with only 4 P-35s and 7 P-40s in opposition. ! P-35 shot down. AP Adriane Moller took one 250 kg bomb and one torpedo.

CA Nachi (which at this stage has depth charges) and 4 DD attacked and missed S-39 (again) - at Legaspi.

A naval party took Stroeng Trang, Indochina from no opposition. Failing to take these obscure interior locations will let the Viet Ming appear - and suck supplies - in them.

Undefended Hollandia fell to another naval party.

Undefended Tavoy Burma fell to airborne asssault.

65th Brigade - 95 per cent ashore - took Aparri from a battalion of the Philippine Army - with only 377 men and 5 guns. That battalion retreated down the coast to Loaog.

Undefended Legaspi fell to a large force of over 11 000 in half a dozen units - all infantry. Now air support will fly in here - and at Aparri -
and armor and artillery is in route. However - the unlanded part of 65 th Brigade returned to Formosa - and reinforcements did not leave Bako - at Aparri - due to a dozen or more subs at Loaog - and lots of aircraft were set to ASW patrols in the Formosa area. That is too many to challenge with ships - they would even eat AS TFs - one of which is at Loaog - and already took a hit - and is also running for Formosa.

I-162 attacked AK Tarakan at Batavia - putting a torpedo into her
8 AS escorts counterattacked - scoring one hit

A JAAF attack on Pucheng China caused 14 resource hits. This attack involved biological weapons in the form of the uji bomb.

Foreign Minister Togo:

It is not advisable to run photo-reconnaissance missions over the territory of the Soviet Union. We patiently allowed such actions by the Nazis in the months preceding their invasion and have learned the appropriate lesson. If Japan truly desires to minimize hostile actions with the Soviet Union then she will desist from such actions immediately and we will correspondingly reduce our photo-reconnaissance and naval search patrols.

VM Molotov
People's Commissar for Foreign Affairs
Union of Soviet Socialist Republics

In a message dated 9/27/2008 4:09:01 A.M. Pacific Daylight Time, Trevethans writes:
Minister Molotov:

It is not advisable to run naval recon over the Sea of Japan or the sea areas near the Kurils - or the NW Pacific - in normal times. [In game mechanics terms some ships will be attacked - no way to turn it off] One might mitigate the number of incidents by reducing the number of patrols planes - but we deliberately do not patrol the hexes that Russian ships might use - at least not until there are ops in some area. Thus - the hex between Vladivostok and Suchan is never patrolled - so ships may always pass freely between them - or even be stationed at sea to block invasions - one hex from a Soviet port. The Northern Sea of Othosk is not patrolled - nor the Barents Sea East of Petropavlovsk. Nor are there ASW patrols in these areas.

IF USN subs enter the area - we will engage in intensive patrolling and Russian ships or subs a sea will be at rick. But there is another factor- Soviet recon could be used to direct USN attacks. So when and if there are USN subs in the area - air patrols are forbidden - on pain of losing the patrol planes themselves.

12 Dec 1941 (Hawaii) 13 Dec (Far East) and both in the battle zone - which straddles the International Date Line

First a note from the Soviets:

Foreign Minister Togo:

As a gesture of goodwill, the Red Air Force and Navy have been ordered to suspend naval search and photo reconnaissance operations in the Far East. Whether these operations remain suspended will depend upon the behavior of the Japanese armed forces. The Soviet Union demands the complete suspension of photo reconnaissance over its territory.

VM Molotov
People's Commissar for Foreign Affairs
Union of Soviet Socialist Republics

The night turn began with 13 ASW units - mostly destroyers - attacking I-16 at PH. 5 hits scored, flooding, fires and heavy damage. Later they attacked again - and missed - but revealed the TF had at least 14 units in it.

Ro-68 torpedoed, shelled, and sank AK Balus at PM. 80 casualties to troop cargo BEFORE she sank - probably more WHEN she sank (which generated a one line note during play exection).

The day turn began with 22 Ki-48s inflicting 12 casualties and 36 hits on airfields at KB. 3 bombers damaged by FLAK.

4 Kates escorted by 3 Claudes caused 4 runway hits at Cagayan. 2 Kates lost to AAA.

4 Blenheims, 14 Buffalos and 6 Whirraways in Malaya caused 26 casualties and 1 gun lost to the 5th Motorized A Division at KB.
This is the only Class A Motorized division ever encountered in combat by Allied forces.

A JAAF strike caused 22 casualties and 1 gun lost to the Hopei Militia Regiment in East China.

The Battle of Nanyo or the Battle of the Central Pacific Basin began with a strike by USS Lexington on the slower wing of the KB - 15 Dauntlesses and 12 TBDs came in unescorted - deliberately because the carrier held all her surviving fighters for CAP duty. These penetrated the CAP of 26 Zeros and 7 Petes. Only 1 float fighter was damaged. Petes managed to score - killing an SBD and 2 TBDs. 9 SBDs and 8 TBDs were destroyed in the effort - which targeted CV Kaga, CA Takao and BB Kirishima. No hits.

The initial Japanese air strike in reply was the decisive one: 19 Vals, 45 Kates and 10 Zeros engaged 11 Buffalos and 2 Wildcats on CAP. The Buffalos drove away most of the Zeros - killing one - and went on to shoot down many bombers. A total of 2 Vals and 8 Kates were lost to CAP and AAA fire - 2 Vals and 12 Kates also being damaged. They put 7 bombs and 5 torpedoes into Lexington, 5 bombs and 3 torpedoes into CA Astoria, 1 more torpedo into CA Portland - and missed DD Lamson altogether. They could have hit Lex more if required - target not found messages indicate she went down already.

The US TF was about equally distant from both wings of KB - it was WNW of Baker Island near the International Date Line - and they were 240 miles NE and NW of that position. The other wing's first strike consisted of 27 Vals, 52 Kates and 18 Zeros. It met 5 Buffalos and 1 Wildcat on CAP - shooting down all but one of them. One Kate fell to the fighter that penetrated the CAP. Lex could not be found - so most planes went home without any hits. A few tried to sink DD Flusser - and missed.

Immediately after another wave came in - 20 Vals - 21 Kates - 10 Zeros. These put 4 bombs into CA Portland - and could not find CV Lexington or CA Astoria - indicating they were already sunk. 3 Buffalos on CAP were shot down. 1 Val shot down and 1 Kate damaged by AA fire.

An afternoon attack by involved 57 Vals 64 Kates and 19 Zeros. These put 19 bombs and 9 torpedoes into CA Chicago and CA Portland - 2 more bombs into DD Lamson - and missed DD Mahan altogether. 1 Val and 4 Kates lost, 1 and 3 damaged due to AAA - no longer any fighters on CAP.

The other wing of KB sent out 24 Vals, 21 Kates and 9 Zeros. These could no longer find Chicago or Portland - indicating they were already sunk. 19 Kates and 26 more Zeros straggled in behing them vs a different TF in the same area - putting 2 torpedoes into CA Louisville and 1 more into AP Hugh L Scott. 3 Kates shot down by AAA fire.

A large force of 13 B-17s - escorted by 3 P-40s - out of Clark missed CL Natori and DD Hato East of Luzon.
3 more B-17s missed an AP West of Luzon.
2 more missed an APD North of Luzon.
3 more missed an MSW unit East of Luzon.

13 Nells out of Bangkok put 5 torpedoes into river ships at Hinzada - sinking both AKs.

28 Zeros swept Manila - but no CAP to engage.

8 Hudsons out of Malaya missed 3 AKs in the Gulf of Thailand.

7 Nells escorted by 9 Zeros out of Legaspi put 6 bombs into AK Parcita - which was already damaged - she sank later in the turn.

A Japanese Brigade in East China achieved 15 : 1 odds vs a Chinese Guerilla Regiment - causing it to retreat. 38 Japanese casualties, 18 Chinese casualties and 1 gun lost.
A similar attack on a different guerilla unit resulted in 26:1 odds - but no retreat. 23 Japanese casualties and 1 gun lost vs 171 Chinese casualties and 6 guns lost.
A third such attack on the Hopei Militia Regiment caused it to surrender. This involved 2 brigades of over 10,000 troops. 108 Japanese casualties and 4 guns lost. 1419 Chinese casualties and 8 guns lost. [ A full strength Guerilla Regiment has 12 guns ]

Undefended Naga on Luzon fell to 16th Division. Only one unit sent foward to capture it - hiding that we landed two reinforced divisions to move on Manila from the East.

Almost 21 000 Japanese in a combined arms force (armor, artillery, engineers, infantry and HQ) captured KB on the first assault at 4:1 odds. 148 Japanese casualties and 6 guns lost. 6951 Allied casualties, 22 guns lost, 782 vehicles lost. Only the static unit surrendered - the rest retreated down the main rail LOC.

One more attack on a Chinese guerilla unit on a Rail LOC in East China drove it from its position. 17:1 odds. 19 Japanese casualties and 1 gun lost. 71 Chinese casualties and 8 guns lost.

13 December 1941 (Hawaii) 14 Dec (Far East) Both (battle zone straddling the International Date Line)

The night turn began with Dutch sub O-20 missing AK Kaisyo Maru NE of Brunei.

Next there was a long and eventful surface action between 4 modern USN DD and the IJN replenishment TF in the Central Pacific Area
North of the carrier battle zone (the tankers chasing the carriers to catch up in due course). The Japanese had 2 CL and 5 DD in escort - and as replacement units which don't damage engines (traveling at low speed) - so they were in pretty good shape. The Americans were true Samouri - and pressed their attacks - even scoring with torpedo attacks - and outshooting the Japanese at night (rare at this stage in the war) for many rounds of combat. USN scored 1 torpedo and 24 shell hits on five warship targets: CL Katori and DD Akatsuki heavily damaged, DD Asanagi on fire, DD Ushio and DD Akebono also hit. DD Porter sunk by 2 torpedoes and 8 shell hits, DD Drayton and DD Flusser set on fire by a total of 8 more shell hits, and DD Mahan missed altogether. The IJN escorts did achieve their operational mission - no damage to the laden oilers.

USN sub Thresher torpedoed AK Kashima Maru - laden with half an SNLF withdrawing from Johnston Island. 25 casualties and 1 gun lost to troop cargo. The fate of the ship and troops is in doubt. She is rinning back to unload at Johnston - if possible - and no doubt will burn out or flood out before the ship can be saved (running away from ports is not a survival strategy for the ship). 3 DD counterattacked but missed the sub.

USN sub Sculpin attacked and hit AK Tientsin Barge Group West of Kyushu - but torpedoes failed to detonate.

I-156 attacked an unidentified ship at Johore Bahru - and missed.

The day turn began with 16 Ki-48s out of minimaly developed and manned Pisanoluke Thailand raiding Rangoon - escorted by 38 Ki-27s and in company with 3 Ki-15 recon planes. No CAP encountered. 1 Buffalo destroyed on the ground. 21 airbase related hits.

48 Bettys and Nells attacked Clark - escorted by 43 Zeros. 19 P-40Bs on CAP of which 15 shot down. 1 Nell damaged. 8 casualties, 6 runway hits.

5 Whiraways escorted by 16 Buffalos failed to harm the 5th Motorized A Division (the only one in IJA) at KB. 1 Buffalo damaged and 1 Whiraway destroyed plus 1 damaged by 5 Ki-43s on CAP - the base does not yet have air support or adequate supplies - having just been captured.
6 Blenheims failed to harm the 18th Square Division at Alor Star.

A JAAF raid in Eastern China failed to harm the Red 47th Guerilla Regiment.
Another caused 16 casualties to the ROC 52nd Guerilla Regiment.
A third on the same unit failed to cause casualties or damage.

81 Ki-21s attacked the ISF No 2 Base Force in Malaya - causing 25 casualties, 1 gun lost and 1 vehicle lost.
Later 16 Ki-30s hit the RAF 223rd Forward Air Station in the same hex - causing 8 casualties. These units are retreating from KB.

22 Ki-51s out of Aparri Luzon caused 44 casualties and 1 gun lost to the 3rd Battalion, 12th Regiment, Philippine Army at Loaog.

14 B-17s attacked an ASW TF at Legaspi. 8 Zeros on CAP failed to harm them. 1 bomb hit on APD Patrol Boat No 1. Heavy damge.

11 Nells out of Legaspi put three 250 kg bombs into AK Elcano Maru at Tacloban. Heavy damage.

8 Claudes out of Aparri strafed a PT unit at Linguyan - but failed to harm it. 7 P-40Es on CAP failed to stop them (they were too low).

The slow wing of the KB attacked the CA Louisville TF - survivors of yesterdays major carrier battle. Louisville was torpedoed and bombed into sinking. AP Hugh L Scot was torpedoed and bombed and badly damaged. Undamaged AP President Coolage took a single torpedo hit - with little apparent effect. Later the fast wing air strike (more distant) came in - sinking AP Hugh L Scot at last. It wasted a lot of effort trying to sink the cruiser again. It failed to find the President Coolage. Next came in a strike from the CVS force - but it wasted its efforts on sunk Louisville and Hugl L Scott - and missed the one target it did find - DD Lamson.

3 Nells missed AK Dos hermanos near Palawan - in spite of being slow and heavily damaged.

5 B-17s out of Luzon missed BB Fuso and BB Yamashiro at Bako the Pescadores. 20 fighters of 3 types failed to stop them.
5 more did better - putting a bomb each into 2 laden APs at the same location - causing 50 casualties and 2 guns lost to troop cargo. This time 2 bombers were damaged - but they shot down 2 fighters and damaged another.

7 Ansons (of the rare armed type of RAAF) out of Rabaul missed CL Kashima and AK Kowa Maru at Kavieng.

The CVS force managed to miss DD Flusser in the Central Pacific - in spite of her damage and slow speed - having sent 5 obsolescent E7K2s.
The KB slow wing sent another strike after already sunk Louisville - and didn't find the one ship left in her TF - AP President Coolage (hiding in the smoke??)

I-123 torpedoed and sank AP Diemen as she ran for the narrows between Celebes and Borneo. She had been torpedoed before - and I-123 was sent to her estimated position to finish her off - just as a different I boat was sent to sink USS Yorktown in the historical Battle of Midway. It doesn't often work out this way - but that is the IJN theory of submarine fleet operations.

A brigade attack (5800 men) attacked a Chinese guerilla regiment in East China - got 15 : 1 odds - and caused 12 casualties. The unit is "planted" and cannot retreat.

37 000 Japanese attacked 14 000 Allies at HK - 0 to 1 odds - but fortifications reduced to 2. 449 Japanese casualties, 23 guns lost, 2 vehicles lost. 112 Allied casualties, 7 guns lost, 1 vehicle lost.

21 000 Japanese attacked the static unit defending Alor Star - capturing the base from the combo supply sink and base force. 1 Blenheim and 1 Buffalo destroyed on the ground. 13460 Allied casualties, 2092 vehicles lost.

Undefended Khorat Thailand fell to ground assault.

1443 men and 93 vehicles of a tank regiment attacked the survivors of the 3/12th Battalion, Philippine Army at Loaog Luzon - driving them from the hex. 16:1 odds. No casualties - they ran at the sound of the tanks I guess.

14 December (Hawaii) 15 December (Far East) Both (Battle zone which straddles the dateline)

The night turn began with 3 Allied ASW units detecting, attacking and missing I-162 at Batavia.

USN sub S-38 tried to attack a large IJN ASW group in the waters North of Luzon. It missed - and the 10 ship force counterattacked - scoring only one hit - but an important one - which caused flooding and a fire.

DMS Piet Hein detected mines at Balikpapan - but didn't hit any.

The day turn began with a JAAF attack on Pucheng - causing 9 resource hits.

23 Ki-48s, 32 Ki-43s, 28 Ki-27s and 3 Ki-15s made a coordinated strike on Rangoon from Pisinaluke and Bangkok. No CAP. 1 Ki-48 destroyed, 2 damaged. 1 P-40B destroyed on the ground. 5 casualties, 12 airfield related hits.

18 Bettys escorted by 44 Zeros out of Takao, joined by 4 Claudes out of Aparri - raided Clark AAF. 15 P-40Bs on CAP. 2 Zeros and 4 P-40s shot down, 2 Bettys damaged. 2 airbase related hits.

3 Whiraways escorted by 14 Buffalos failed to harm the 5th Motorized A Division on the RR South of KB.

A JAAF attack on the Red 47th Guerilla Regiment caused 79 casualties.
2 others were combat ineffective.
One more caused 62 casualties to the ROC 52nd Guerilla Regiment.
Yet another caused 18 more to the same unit.

10 Vildebeeste escorted by 5 Buffalos out of Balikpapan attacked a CVE force SW of Jolo. 12 Claudes, 7 Zeros and 15 Petes on CAP were 100 per cent effective - driving the bombers all away. 3 Vildebeeste lost, 1 damaged. 1 Buffalo lost. 2 Petes shot down in the effort. There was a seaplane carrier in one of the escorted TFs. This force is going around the islands to Cagayan - to pick up units to move to Davao.

2 more Vildebeeste missed an AK with the force about to land at Brunei.
Later 6 more came back - escorted by 4 Buffalos - and missed CL Nagara.

3 Ansons out of Rabaul missed an AK at Kavieng. 6 Petes on CAP damaged two of them.

4 Nells out of Bangkok put a torpedo into the Burma Third Barge Group in the Bay of Bengal.
6 more torpedoed AK Bhamo in the same area - and missed AK Magwe - both river transports at sea. Bhamo sank later.

The slow wing of KB sank DD Lamson with 16 bombs.
The CVS force of KB missed DD drayton.
The fast wing of KB sank DD Flusser with 7 bombs and 1 torpedo.
This force is running to the NE - after days running SW - chasing 5 DD survivors of the battle. It is like Adm Nelson crossing the Atlantic - both ways - chasing the French fleet before Trafalgar. The distances run are similar.

15 Nells out of Legaspi (too small to permit torpedo loading) put 8 bombs into already damaged AK Dos Hermanos near Tay Tay.
They had 7 Zeros in escort.

8 USN ASW units - 7 DD and 1 PC - detected, attacked and hit I-24 twice near Kauai.

The invasion of Brunei went in late in the day. 85 CD shots fired, 1 AK and 1 AP took one hit each. 609 casualties, 4 guns lost, 1 vehicle lost.
Allied ground bombardment was ineffective.

Undefended Catarman fell to an SNLF attack.

A brigade of 5905 men attacked and wiped out a Chinese Guerilla Regiment in East China.

Undefended Khoan Koen Thailand fell to Japanese ground assault.

Undefended Hinzada Burma fell to an Allied attack. The force that had left was marching back.

Undefended Toungoo Burma fell to airborne attack.

The ides of December 1941 (Hawaii) 16 Dec (Far East)

The Battle of the Central Pacific Basin is over. Three destroyers escaped (probably) to the NE - harassed only by half a dozen submarines. Only one is still reported by air recon - and running all out to catch it - into the recon and bomber field at Oahu - tearing up engines and expending fuel is not worth it. The four carriers and the remaining seaplane search ships - and several submarines - are retiring onto Enewetok - where an invasion group is forming up for Midway. Two other carriers and more system damaged escorts already retired for Truk yesterday - and they will go there to repair and rebuild air groups. This is the price of the high speed run to get Lexington - and it was worth it. Running back again - just hunting destroyers - isn't worth it. An AP with a torpedo in her belly escaped to the SE - and unless she runs into two submarines in that area - she also got away clean.

Meanwhile air recon and air strikes revealed the "transports running from the Philippines through the Celebes Sea" (in the day before analysis) are nothing less than a large Force Z with Prince of Wales, Repulse and Tromp firmly identified in the same hex as a two cruiser TF - likely Houston and Boise - this very near Jolo. We have a slow CVE "force" nearby - a small surface group - and a transport group laden with a brigade bound for Cagayan. The focus of operations in this area is now shifted to hunting Force Z - which we assume will absorb the two warship TF. Scot is not a Sir Robin player - and there are two equally likely missions for this force: he is trying to surface raid the transports - or he is trying to evacuate air support units from Jolo or Cagayan - or the 101st Philippine Division on Mindinao (unlikely given the pp cost).
Regardless - WE are now hunting the force - which is far North of where I would dare to send it - and bound NE. His timing is clever - most bombers are demoralized from attacking for a week - no good bases (Level 4 permitting torpedo loading) are in the area - and there are few supplies at the few forward bases. Nor is a powerful surface or carrier group around - ideal hunting ground for him. But we will see what we will see: I have the ability to send in a large number of units - and they should conspire to complicate his situation. His speacialty is using this sort of force, plus submarines. Mine is improvising responses to unexpected opportunities.

I laid mines at Jolo and Cagayan - so if he goes to either - he will risk hitting one or two - and I can try to pick off cripples. Yesterday I sent a retiring minelaying sub with two good shots of torpedoes to Jolo - so much the better - he also risks a torpedo in a major unit if he goes there. Today Brunei fell - so we will fly in air support and turn it into a good forward recon base - and lousy forward bomber base. Davao is also being used for forward recon. So is Legaspi - which has a section of fine bombers - which if unable to load torpedoes do carry 250 kg bombs. The only good long range bomber group in the area is at Takao on Formosa - supported by a demoralized one running long range recon. If he comes North - this may get a shot. The small carrier force absorbed the SAG - we have 6 heavy cruisers and twice that many light warships - so it won't be too bad if we tangle with the big boys (I regard Japanese cruisers and destroyers as battleship killers). This combined force headed for the narrows between Borneo and Celebes - to cut off an escape in that direction. It is covered by a few Zeros out of Brunei. This force is CVL Zuiho and CVE Taiyo. This force is led by RADM R Nateba - one of the best RADM in IJN able to handle carriers. The CVS Mizuho detached to cover the transport force along with the two most system damaged DDs (my standards are high - these have system damage = 2 - my forward forces are always system damage 0 or 1).

The transport group switched objectives to Cebu - which should be unexpected - and which a small SAG from Legaspi can reach. It is covered by Zeros out of Legaspi. A small SAG (one CL and 1 DD) sailed from Brunei (two other DD went into port to fight fires from the fight for the place) - as a contingency force. A larger one sailed from Singora at full speed - headed to Brunei to refuel (and detach any ships with engine damage). The four old BB sailed from Bako - down the backside of Luzon - bound for Luzon - to meet tankers inbound for it - and be in position to follow up if he stays in the area two or three more days. This force is led by VADM K Yamamoto - the best senior officer of IJN. A faster group of three CAs is sailing down the front side of Luzon - again to be in a contingency force position - depending on opportunities. This force is led by RADM Tanaka - the best RADM in IJN.

To these moves add several submarines - two going under the bottom of Borneo to Balikpapan to pick off retiring ships - four headed to Brunei to refuel and oppose a retirement over the topside of Borneo - and one already at Jolo to oppose an attempt to pick up the base force there (or catch a possible Japanese landing invasion group there). We moved a fresh long range bomber group far west in Japan - to transfer in if useful tomorrow. And we have several bomber groups on recon duty that may come up far enough to be effective in a day or two. In all - 4 BB - 10 CA - 6 CL - and about 18 DD are moving into the area.

The night turn began with 7 CD shots fired (no hits) vs a continuing landing at Brunei. 33 casualties to beach defenses. Then CL Nagara and 3 DD performed a bombardment mission - 3 CD shots resisted it and scored a hit on DD Kawakaze - 28 casualties, 1 vehicle lost and 9 other hits to Brunei's Allied defenders. Pre dawn landings saw 8 more CD shots fired (no hits) and 14 more Japanese casualties to beach defenses.

DMS Piet Hein detected mines at Balikpapan (sub laid).

The transport torpedoed several days ago that tried to get back to Johnston Island to offload her troop cargo sank - and half a SNLF went down with her.

USN sub Swordfish torpedoed and sank AK Kokuyo Maru two hexes SW of Osaka. Two transports tried to cross a patrol line of 5 subs - a mistake - I tried to divert all TFs to evade and missed one.

5 USN and Philippine Army PT units ran in on Loaog where major landing forces are langing troops. They ran into a large ASW TF of 6 DD and 4 APDs. In the first action IJN had the initiative and damaged 2 PT units - one badly. In the second the Allies got the initiative and torpedoed DD Fubuki - losing two PT units in the process.

I-164 was detected, attacked and hit twice by 4 USN four piper DDs and DMS Kortenaer near Palembang. Later in the night they tried again - scoring two hits - causing fires and heavy damage.

USN sub S-38 fired on AP Kagi Maru North of Laoag - but torpedoes failed to detonate. 3 escorts counterattacked - but missed.
USN sub S-39 - East of Luzon - correctly calculated the position of damaged and retiring Patrol Boat No 46 - and torpedoed it again, sinking her.
