Running DOS Games in Win 98

Post by Stefdragon »

Hi:

I have this great flight sim on CD ROM from Microprose in 1994 called "1942, Pacific Air War Gold". It won't run in the DOS window of Windows 98. I thought all this stuff was backwards compatible. I thought a DOS program would run in a Win 98 DOS window. I get a message about "No Hi Mem" etc. I loaded a Hi Mem file off an old floppy into my root directory on drive C, but still no program.
This was one of the coolest flight sims I have ever come across,
with all sorts of great features like VCR playback, remote cameras from any angle, and pretty good graphics for an older program. I miss playing this sim and I am frustrated and miffed that I can't use it.
Will it run in Windows 95? I have an old Pentium 133 with 24mb of RAM that I could set up. Should I just set it up as a DOS or Win 95 machine to run these old games? I have others that won't run either...like DOOM and X-Wing.
Is there a site that I could download DOS 6.2 from?

HELP!!!

 :(  :o :)

Booting to Dos game mode

Post by Mustang »

In windows 98, go to your windows folder and look for a shortcut called "MS-Dos Mode for Games". Double clicking on that will reboot the computer to Dos mode and you should be ready to go.

Check here, if I had a Win 98 OS in front of me I'd talk you through on how to set up a game to run in DOS. I don't want to do it from memory as I might miss a crucial step. Check here on how to set program to run in MS-DOS. Programs setup for MS-DOS mode

No Sound

Post by Stefdragon »

Okay great. By going to the "MSDOS with EMS and XMS" file in the Windows folder and then restarting in DOS, I've got the graphics working but no sound. I have a Sound Blaster AWE 64, which is Sound Blaster 16 compatible.
I notice in the root drive of "C" when in DOS that the config.sys and autoexec.bat files do not have a "Set Blaster" line. Could someone please tell me how to do that, or to point me to a site that explains it. There is a "Soundset.exe" program in the game directory that shows me what the addresses and IRQ's are for music and speech. I think I remember something about the IRQ settings being in the Blaster command line, but I can't quite remember how to do it.

Thank you in advance,

Unphased but confused

Oh boy now I really have to pay the hamster overtime to spin my wheels. Yes you have to set the sound manually give me a little time to try and dig up some old game setup notes.

Ok try these in you modified files these line will have to be added.

Autoexec.bat
Set Sound=c:\sb16
Set Blaster=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330 T6
Set MIDI=synth:1 map:e
c:\sb16\diagnose /s
c:\sb16\sb16set /p /q

Config.sys
Device=C:\sb16\drv\ctmmsys.sys

Of course if running setsound display different values you canchange those in the Set blaster line. Also if you hadn't noticed you'll need dos driver for this to work. Click here for SB AWE 64 DOS driver download page. SB AWE 64 DOS Driver download

Almost Ready to Hear Sound

Post by Stefdragon »

Thanks,

Where do I download the SB AWE 64 DOS driver into?

The adress on the SB card diagnostics says "330",
The IRQ says "2",
and the DRQ says "1".
Does that correspond to the settings you gave me?
If not, I'll make the right changes.

Do I just add the appropriate lines via EDIT when in the root directory of "C" while in DOS with Auto and Config?

Once I get this right I would think that I will be set up for any of my DOS games, correct?

You need to change the A to 330 delete the p330, change the I to 2, as far as the drivers the should be programs so download them to a temp directory and then run them. you don't want to edit the autoexec.bat and config.sys in the root directory of C:\ just in the modified ones the MS page I sent you to shows you how to setup, if you modify your root one it will screw up the Win 98 boot. I would suggest looking at a particular games site to see how to set this stuff up as without looking at your system I'm shooting in the dark. I'm only tring to point you in the right direction on how to get it done. I don't have all the assets available to me to walk you through this step by step.

Loading PRGS> in MS DOS mode

I just read some of what you're talking about in that article you indexed for me. It makes sense that there would have to be customized settings for any particular program.
However I am obviously a little rusty in DOS and sometimes all I want to say is: "I see...said the blind man".
I'm not looking to send a man to Mars, or find a cure for cancer.
I just want to get sound from my eight year old DOS game.

I am confident that I will overcome this current crisis in my life,
and I appreciate your help.
