this attack is a training run from Soerabaja, although only 2 hexes away I suffer 1-3 op losses daily with usually 1 or 2 pilots lost. Problem is that not only the rookies are crashing but also pilots that are well above 80 exp and I can´t afford that. Looks like the only place I can train fighter pilots is Clark field - Manila as this is only 1 hex range but Clark field is full (level 8 af, 400 ac). Could build up Clark to level 9 though...

Allied forces CAPTURE Kiska Island base !!!

Miller has now reclaimed Allied territory in the Aleutans...

He stated in his last email that it will be interesting if I will be able to take Wyndham and if so, the rest of Northern Australia will be toast. Well, we will see, at the moment there are 37!! units at Wyndham with 3 more coming in from the West. 40 units sounds a lot to me, we will see what that means in assault points, ordered a first bombardment for next turn. We have spotted 4 Allied units moving towards Alice Springs now (some 65.000 troops), so this could mean 4 div/bgd. Don´t know why they are moving South, but I´m happy about that.

Remembering Miller saying how hard it is drawing supplies to Northern Australia and I hope that this is my biggest advantage at the moment. Wyndham is cut off from the East and I hope there aren´t even 20.000 supplies. We are somewhat in a hurry and we can´t afford a siege for months. We have to take this base within something like four weeks at the latest. With 40 units and level 40 forts this could be a hard task...

What will follow might be a stupid idea, but anyway...

If Miller is reinforcing Wyndham, why don't you send your reserve troops to Broome or Derby, to really cut them off ?  If you pick Derby, and if I've correctly understood the movement rules, you would prevent Wyndham's LCU's from exiting that base to flush your second invasion back into the sea.[&:]

the reason I don´t send the troops (that are 100% prepped for Derby) to do an amphibious invasion of Derby is simple: I fear that Miller could this time decide to set the 800+ bombers he has on nav attack. I didn´t understand why he didn´t do that when I invaded Darwin but he can´t make that error three times (first in India, then at Darwin). It´s just too much of a risk and not really worth it as the plan is: tank units will surround Derby and so it´s cut off anyway. The only thing to counter this would be moving troops (inf or tank) out of Wyndham and then it will still be hard to make a stand against tanks with an assault value of 1300+. As soon as I will have Derby cut off, the tanks will join the assault on the town. I will also bring in my cruisers again to start bombardment runs but that will be dangerous. Miller also has PTs now again at his bases, I first have to deal with them. When I get the first nuke on Wyndham, then all follow on bombardments would be less dangerous.

Why did you evacutate Attu and Kiska though? Considering the beating he has taken all over the map the shortest route through the Kuriles will look very attractive to him.

the Kuriles are garissoned. Paramushiro Jima and Etoroforu (sp?) Jima have troops, CD guns and level 9 forts. Enough supplies AND it´s mountaineous terrain. I´ve built up my airfields in Northern Japan and while it´s not my number one priority, I could move a thousand aircraft into the region in no time. And it would again be an area where I would thrown in the kitchen sink to counter my opponent. Same as what I´m doing now in Northern Australia, this is only an answer to his invasion of Timor... and then the SHOCK!

Ground combat at Wyndham

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 241973 troops, 2833 guns, 57 vehicles, Assault Value = 5278

Defending force 166368 troops, 1313 guns, 455 vehicles, Assault Value = 2895 [X(][X(][X(]

Allied ground losses:
448 casualties reported

holy crap! [X(] Imagine how the look of my face changed when the ground combat popped up and I saw a screen full of combat ready inf divisions! There are 6 divisions and 2 brigade sized units and more than two dozen support units. The 7 units that were left retreating from Darwin are not much more than ghosts, but all in all this is a shock for me. The first thing I was thinking about was that this whole adventure will turn out to be a big defeat for me.

Thinking about the whole situation and writing this 2 hours after doing the turn, we are now somewhat more optimistic and can only count on one thing at the moment: S U P P L Y ! Those 167.000 Allied troops will need a lot of supply and I know that Northern Australia isn´t swimming in it, while I have access to fully stocked supply depots at Darwin. Now as I have spotted a lot of TFs at Derby suddenly, I guess my opponent is bringing in supplies but my tank units will cut Wyndham off within the next three days. Then they will have to block any attempt of opening the supply line again. I don´t know how much supply every of my deliberate attacks will cost the Allied troops but hopefully more than 7-8000. I think they would run out of supplies after the third attack. But hey, I´m not fighting Chinese units, those are Western Allied inf divisions and they are sitting behind level 9 forts, so when I attack I guess I will suffer 15-20.000 casualties for each attack. I don´t even have a 2:1 advantage and I´m not sure I can move in my tanks as this would give Miller the opportunity to open the supply line again. Perhaps I should block the railroad to the West with two inf divs and move the tanks into the town as soon as it is cut off.

Gentlemen, it looks very grim at the moment. Very grim! [:(] On the other side, imagine if we will be able to take the town and destroy all those Allied forces trapped here. This is a whole army and another one is sitting on Timor. I´m dreaming at the moment, but destroying this army here and the other one on Timor would mean that we would destroy 12 inf divs, several bgds and dozens of support troops.

I have to decide within the next couple of turns what to do, but as it stands now all I can say is that I am committed now and we will have to fight it out. Nearly the whole Southern Area Army has landed on Northern Australia and we have the support of nearly the whole IJN so it´s either death or glory it seems.

I had never thought that Miller would have that many inf units still at Northern Australia and thank god I did not land at one of the Western bases as I guess I would have run into something like 2000 assault points.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/22/43

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Night Time Surface Combat, near Wyndham at 30,86

Japanese Ships
DD Shirayuki
DD Hatsuyuki
DD Minekaze
DD Sawakaze
DD Hakaze

Allied Ships
PT PT-188
PT PT-189, Shell hits 7, and is sunk
PT PT-190

There are two things we have to do before assaulting Wyndham on the ground. First, we have to cut it off with our tanks (should happen within the next two turns) and second, we have to bombard the snot out of the Allied troops. We will need our damage cruisers, our battleships, everything the IJN has still afloat.

To do those bombardments we have to kill off the 6 PTs ther and hope there won´t be popping up new ones every turn like they did at Lautern. This DD TF goes in, surprises this PT squadron and sinks one...

Allied Ships
PT PT-127
PT PT-220, Shell hits 40, and is sunk
PT PT-221

Then we encounter the second squadron and see the usual PT boat BS I´ve been crying about for years now. Today, we sink two PTs will lose one DD (chance to make it 1%) and have another one with 29 sys damage (Shirayuki) from 20mm Oerlikon fire. Let´s wipe out the whole IJN with PTs... [8|]

not one of those aircraft crashes...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Wyndham

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 242056 troops, 2835 guns, 57 vehicles, Assault Value = 5842

Defending force 167265 troops, 1346 guns, 457 vehicles, Assault Value = 2940

Allied ground losses:
158 casualties reported [:(]

I don´t do a lot of damage with having all my units on bombardment... that´s very bad news. We have a dozen art units being shipped to Darwin, they should arrive there within a week but have then the long way to Wyndham and we don´t have the time to do weeks of bombardments... and I have to keep a strong garisson at Darwin as the enemy could decide to start marching towards this base.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Chungking

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 15431 troops, 173 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1526

Defending force 276515 troops, 1522 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 6529

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Kweiyang

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 22630 troops, 268 guns, 7 vehicles, Assault Value = 3153

Defending force 187616 troops, 76 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 5267

Allied ground losses:
11 casualties reported

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Wyndham

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 117977 troops, 1239 guns, 65 vehicles, Assault Value = 2940

Defending force 300061 troops, 3196 guns, 74 vehicles, Assault Value = 5842

Japanese ground losses:
47 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

Allied ground losses:
33 casualties reported
Guns lost 2

this on the other side is making me confident. 1239 guns and all they do are 47 casualties on our side and I´ve got half a dozen HQs in the lead that normally are hit hard by bombardments. Does this mean the Allied are already low on supply and therefor their bombardement is so bad? Remember the Allied bombardements at Dili? We suffered between 600 and 1000 casualties each turn and there were far less Allied troops. Hmmm... [&:]

Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves? Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here? Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change? [:D] (Oddball, Kelly's Heroes)

1st & 2nd USMC divisions. Nice. Imagine all those new bridges that are going to be built!

Now, the second part. Why are you wasting all those lovely DDs on crappy PT boats?
Try with some upgunned PG-s or similair. Or use some low exp Zeroes on 100ft naval attack.

He decided to route them through Perth rather than trying to break through your lines ?  Or he believes you would go for all of Australia rather than just the north coast ?[&:]

would take months until he could move to Perth and then up to Broome. And I also doubt he thinks I´m going for more than just Northern Australia. I have no idea why those two divs are moving towards Alice Springs.

Perhaps he wants you to lengthen your LOS and keep you from gettin the only airfield in the middle of the country?

damnd chris..."immer diese negativen wellen". warum sagst du zu abwechselung nicht etwas positives morriaty?[:D]

that was the german translation of the scene with "spinner" the tank commander and his mechanic.

you got 12 allied divisions in the mouse trap! even if it takes 2 months, you are able to destroy em all and then you will be the winner of this game imho.

yeah I´m seeing it most times too dark but honestly, let me play the Allied side in this case and say good bye to this Japanese attempt of knocking out those 12 divisions+ and the attempt of taking Northern Australia. This is no critics about Miller but honestly, while it seems that I´m on the offensive big style, it would now be his time to knock me out.

I´ve tried PGs and MSWs in the past in other games, with awful results. And using Zeroes or any other aircraft is no option as there are Allied fighters flying Cap over the base. Not just a dozen Warhawks but a hundred fighters, including Lightnings and Corsairs. Not worth my pilot losses, better to lose another three DDs. I can only hope he can´t just do the "click - PT pop up"...

well, what should I do with this airfield in the middle of the continent. It´s only purpose IMO is to serve as a transfer base for aircraft coming from the South, going to the North. I´m not interested in taking the whole continent anyway and honestly, Miller can´t think I´m up to taking anything else than Northern Australia.

negative waves? [:D] Because I can think about what I would do as the Allied in this situation. I can only hope Miller won´t be trying what I would do... [;)]

The question is if I will have two months to take it...

Try them again (Pgs and MSW), in worst case scenario you're gonna lose few 1-2 points ships. Maybe you get lucky this time! After all, your DD vs PT score ain't that perfect either [;)].

Wow, that's a lot of people up there.  Six divs at Wyndham, six more at Lautern.  How many at Alice Springs, Derby, Broome ?  How many are kept at Perth, at Brisbane, at Sydney ?  What do you think he would do if you sent your tanks down the road towards Southern Australia, would it not panick him ?[;)][:D]

I've been reading this without comment, but good AAR. I like the late move to Australia, pretty ballsy.

I can't recall, did you get Auto Victory in this one? If so, obviously you are playing through that.
