March attrition

This sequel to the award-winning Crown of Glory takes Napoleonic Grand Strategy to a whole new level. This represents a complete overhaul of the original release, including countless improvements and innovations ranging from detailed Naval combat and brigade-level Land combat to an improved AI, unit upgrades, a more detailed Strategic Map and a new simplified Economy option. More historical AND more fun than the original!

March attrition

Post by Mus »

What is a realistic level of march attrition? I started a new single player game on more difficult/blucher settings to get the lowest level of march attrition available and harder detailed combat.

Was just wondering historically how many men could be expected to straggle during a march.

And also, what would be the effect of playing a PBEM with maximum difficulty set? Would minors become too powerful? What is changed by these settings other than march attrition?

Assuming all major powers were player controlled all players would be effected equally, I just want to make sure whatever economic boosts the AI receives wouldnt bump up the minors to the point of being overpowered.

For you pbem land-power players:

March attrition occurs in pbem, yes?

Ericbabe answered "Napoleon" attrition in another thread.

This is the area of the manual that addresses march attrition.  It only occurs at higher difficulty levels.  Playing with even a small amount of it so far makes me think a moderate amount would be really cool to play with in PBEM as it forces you to be more intelligent about your movements.

2.6.5 March Attrition (higher difficulty levels)
[font="garamond premr pro,garamond premr pro"][font="garamond premr pro,garamond premr pro"]
March Attrition only operates at higher difficulty levels, as shown on the setup screen at the beginning of the game. It only affects human players. Each time a unit moves to a new province, it loses a certain amount of Strength, depending on the game’s difficulty level, as shown on the Setup screen. This percentage only applies to Strength above a level equal to 300xMorale. (So, for example, a unit with Strength 10000 and Morale 5, suffering March Attrition of 10%, would lose 10% of (10000-(300x5)); 10% of 10000-1500 is 10% of 8500, which is 850.) The following modifiers are multiplicative:

Units in friendly provinces only lose 80%

Units moving on roads lose 66%

Units with the Baggage Train special ability lose 66%

Artillery lose 33%

Units under Force March lose 150%

I wouldnt suggest playing with 10% necessarily, but some amount would be cool. Also wondering if anyone knows what a realistic amount would be?

Barbarossa, you were right.

Eric suggested playing 1805 economic challenge with 10% march attrition might be the most realistic.

Now I just need to find enough sadists to play that scenario with me.

I think we should do bids on that one too.

The reason why I asked my supplementary was that in my latest pbem, I moved one of my armies 1 province and experienced march casualties. I had a depot and enough money to support, so I presumed this was the case? Have I missed something? (I'm used to playing with ships!).

Ah that's good then actually. I did forget to mention (sorry about that [:D] ) that when I set up the 1796 pbem campaign, that I set the difficulty levels to Bonaparte/Bonaparte. I was actually hoping that we would see some attrition. I hadn't noticed it yet (need to go back and check my reports a little better) but am glad to hear it is actually working (wasn't sure if it would for pbem).

LOL.

Nice man. I hadnt noticed as England I havent moved any troops yet.

I dont know that the combat settings have any effect since we arent playing detailed combat in PBEM though.
